Da Giovanni - Antwerp
Jan Blomstraat 3-5-7-8
2000 Antwerpen
Located right in the middle of the historic part of Antwerp, opposite the cathedral and a few steps from the Grote Markt. A very popular place which means the pizzas are always fresh(students get a 20% discount on the total bill if they have a student card). Don't be put off by the waiters spruiking for customers on the pavement -- it's all part of the atmosphere. A total of 20 different pizzas (even with pineapple for those who insist on thinking Italy's in Hawaii)as well as a range of pastas (big portions). Wine by the carafe: cheap and cheerful, nothing special, and big bottles of Italian sparkling mineral water. Finish off with an espresso and a grappa (why not?). Very friendly staff, all very vocal, with Italian accents even if their mamma-mias were not from the old country. Not expensive, you'll come away with plenty of cash to have a beer or three at one of the cafes on the Grote Markt (try a 'bolleke' a favourite Antwerp beer at Den Engel) (alaninantwerp, 28-05-2009)

Cachet de Cire - Turnhout
Grote Markt 12
2300 Turnhout
Quirky, artsy, bar/restaurant in Central Turnhout... maybe too quirky. Belgian food, mid-range pricing in a space which seems like it was once someone's living room. Art plays a big role here and there were artists, at work, hanging the latest exhibition. It was a bit odd as they were walking around in their stocking feet hanging pictures and stroking their goatees. The owner/server spent a bit too much time with the artists and could have been a bit more atttentive to details (like not forgetting a drink I ordered). Anyway, had hog jowls braised in Orval beer which were absolutely lovely. Sauteed vegetables perfectly cooked but definitely lacked seasoning. Croquets were ho-hum. Hit and miss food but not expensive. Quirky service, slightly oddball atmosphere. Would consider coming back but no huge hurry. A grudging third star. (Danno, 15-03-2012)

gasthof de beiaard - Mol
Abdijlaan 28
2400 Mol
Rustic Gasthof attached to Abbey. Very basic grub. Good beer. Nice wine garden. Well basically the Abbey doesn't brew the beer anymore, so the draught beer isn't any better here than elsewhere. Food was just very basic (a lot of deep fried Dutch style). Had a cheese and salami plate but was def not the Abbey cheese. Not really much to recommend it other than the nice location (part of the Abbey) and the wine garden which is probably nice in Summer. Can't say it's worth a side trip. (Danno, 22-02-2012)

hema - Mechlin
Bruul
2800 Mechelen
After shopping in Singapore and Bangkok, it is a relief to enter a no-nonsense place like Hema, where quality does not automatically stands for high prices. OK, we do have Ikea - even two in Singapore, but Hema could definitely become a big hit over there in its own right. I bought matt steel cutlery (I could not even dream of finding this at this price at Tang's), bed covers, bathroom things, kitchen utensils - OK, all things I can find in Singapore - but not at this price.. Le Pain Quotidien - Mechlin
Ijzeren Leen 35
2800 Mechelen
Calling the 'Pain Quotidien' a coffee shop is of course a shame. I have been in several ones - particularly in New York, so I do know what to expect, and it certainly still stands for an excellent breakfast in a light environment with lots of wood around you. The variety is all you could wish for, and everything is of excellent quality. That is unfortunately not the case for all staff: the guy who took my order the second time simply got everything wrong: ham instead of cheese, wrong type of egg preparation and there was something else I forgot since. He got off lucky, thanks to an alert waitress who repaired all his mistakes. (geertbarbier, 07-01-2012)

Phone House - Mechlin
Bruul 30
2800 Mechelen
I went here to buy a local phone number with easy access to international phone services and got an excellent deal: 30 EUR, and after one week of calling and SMS-ing all over the place incl.Thailand and Tanzania, my balance is still not finished. I rarely review such places, but when the service is worth it, I can appreciate it! (geertbarbier, 07-01-2012)

Hyllit Hotel - Antwerp
De Keyserlei 28-30
2018 Antwerpen
Hotel near the main train station and in the diamond district - opposite the nicest cake shop! on the other side you do have the main shopping centre and a couple of minutes walk to the city centre. Reception staff was very friendly and helpful. We had a nice large room in the new part of the bulding as we stayed nearly 2 weeks during a business trip. Rooms are very clean, have aircon, flatscreen tv and a mini-bar, unfortunately no coffee or tea facilities nor bathrub but a big walk-in shower. The hotel does have a garage at 17Euros per day. We did enjoy our stay and I think it is a nice 4 star hotel at the right price with friendly service. (bernie4711, 21-09-2011)

Ra - Antwerp
Kloosterstraat 13
2000 Antwerpen
If you're looking to spend some money on designer clothes that no other shops have, then this is your place. You can check out the bookstore too and after all that shopping have a delicious shake or even dinner in their restaurant! (anaeva, 06-09-2011)
