Located due southwest of the city centre of Leipzig is the small Absteige Hostel. Being a stranger in a strange land, it wasn’t too easy to get to if one arrives late at night, such as I did. None of the taxi drivers knew how to get there. Only the large A&O Hostel opposite the main railway station is known, but then again, it’s hard to miss a building of that size. Anyhow the Absteige Hostel is located in Zentrum-Süd, just past the court of justice. My first impressions were positive, namely that of a small hostel with friendly staff. However, on a second glance, the hostel had quite a few shortcomings. Despite being located on the busy Harkortstraße, one could hardly hear the traffic. The noise on the inside of the building is another story, however. The rooms are small and offer beds with mattresses that are quite soft and lockers that are too small to fit one’s belongings. Although the unisex bathroom was kept clean, it offered little privacy. In addition, although there’s no breakfast served, there’s a bakery (Bäckerei Friedemann) at walking distance from the hostel.In short, the Absteige Hostel is just cheap and modest, but nothing more. My eternal quest for a good Indian restaurant brought me to Leipzig of all places, a city that for some odd reason hosts a fair number of curryhouses. I chose Safran, a two-storey place located on Karl-Liebknecht-Straße in Südvorstadt, opposite the locally famous naTo. Their extensive menu boasts the usual selection of lamb, chicken, fish and vegetarian dishes, along with Indian beers and whisky, and German beers and wines. I chose the lentil soup (dal) as a starter, followed by a spicy lamb curry (mutton karahi) with some bread (chapati) as the main course. These turned out to be rather disappointing. The soup was watery. I was promised the lamb curry was spicy, but it turned out to be hardly spicy at all. The chapati wasn't much better, either. Safran is just another disappointing curryhouse, where the food is little authentic and adjusted too strongly to the German taste. (Batavier, 14-05-2012) 2

On April 14th 2012, I went to see the show "Entdeckung Korea". The exhibit was displayed in a dimmed room, which gave it a mysterious feeling. Each piece was seperatly lighted to draw focus to the piece. First coming in to the dimmed room made me very curious of what was to come. A handful of people were there to enjoy the exhibit, which made it easy to discuss and observe each piece as there was little distraction. The show was focused on the cultural aspect of korean everyday life. Many objects such as mirrors, hair brushes, clothing and home made pottery were on display.A lot posters gave background information about Korean history. In addition a few paintings were displayed mainly by unknown artists. A piece that stood out was the waterfall brush painting, which was a metaphor for Korean seperation into north and south. Many paintings displayed were related to myths and showed connections between humans and nature. However they clearly conveyed the korean values. The religious theme was also stronlgy present in all forms of art, especially in the "heaven and hell" painting I first had an aversion to it, looking closer there were many things to discover and life was reflected. Although the pottery was detailed and beautiful to look at, it would have been interesting to see more paintings and be able to learn about korean artists. Overall it was a nice little show. The museums entrance guard was very helpful and informative. He allowed me to exhibit other parts of the museum which were not included in my ticket. After an hour I had seen evrything and became aware of the beautiful korean art. (SPLAT-list, 16-04-2012) 4

Great burgers! (I recommend the Fat Mexican, a vegan bean burger, or the chicken burger which comes with a delicious honey and mustard dressing). Proper chunky chips too, which I like. Prices are good. Not always many free tables here though especially at the weekend. The food also takes ages to come, but if you're there with good company I suppose it doesn't matter so much. Great shop! + good sausage + big possibility + good place + indoor and outdoor a place to sit down + clean and tidy + debit card - the fries are nothing special but there is a good amount of ketchup = a little bit expensive but a nice shop with good quality and nice layout (maseterjojo, 15-03-2012) 5
