Marsa Alam Airport - Marsa Alam
Marsa Alam
Wow, what can I say.  Although the security appears quite laid back, they are on the ball as they say.The airport is very clean, and surprisingly quite big.  It looks very basic from the outside, but was very happy when I got inside.  The shops in Marsa Alam are closed during the day, and open at night. But being a woman, I would not venture out on my own in case I get harrassed or worse.  Luckily for me, I managed to get some gifts for my son at the airport, and not from duty free. They have a pizza hut, a costa coffee, obviously duty free, and some lovely little nicky nack stalls around the place.I am definately pleased with this Airport.  I do have to mention though, that it's a great airport when you leave, but when you arrive, you don't know whether your coming or going, and people try to rip you off with regards to paying your visa.  Make sure you know the price of your visa, and if someone asks you for more money, don't pay it!! Sensatori hotel - Sharm el Sheikh
Dusti Rd
Sharm el Sheikh
Arriving at Sharm El Sheik airport there is a desk for Sensatori guests, however the queue for this was just as long as the 2 queue's for general Thomson's customers, and after this desk you all end up in one long queue for passport control anyway, so it did seem a bit pointless. Once out of the airport there is a dedicated Sensatori coach so it's straight onto the hotel. On arrival went to the Fountain View restaurant where we were seated and offered drinks, and then we wandered over to the large food area. We were so overcome with the choice, variety and appearance of the food that we must have looked lost as a chef came over and explained everything to us. There's a number of different 'stations' where chef's cook fresh food for you if you wish, on our first night there was a fresh sushi station which was very tasty. There's also a large number of desserts, cakes, fruit and cheese, along with salad's and starters and a huge bread display! The hot food that was put out onto hot plates was also varied. I note people complained about the temperature of the food however the food in these was hot, but the plates aren't kept hot and in this air conditioned restaurant, people would place food on plates and wander around before sitting down by which time it will naturally have cooled down. The plates could be kept warm to help solve this problem. After eating we went outside onto a golf buggy where we were driven to our room. At our room the suitcases were outside our door, and as soon as we walked into our room we had the wow factor. It's clean, modern and has a great appearance. The mood lighting was on in the bathroom and the TV was pumping out the Sensatori mood music. We had room 1104 which is a sea view swim up room. The balcony has 2 reclining chairs and a table, which were comfortable enough but I would have preferred loungers. The swim up was fantastic and we often used this in the afternoon after a day at the beach. The view was directly of the beach, the only thing separating us was a path, and it was a fantastic room that got the sun all day until about 4pm. Our cleaner was so nice, we always left a pound or 2 for him and he'd always chat to us when we bumped into him in the corridor. He would clean rooms all day, and then clean out the rooms of people leaving ready for the people arriving so he'd still be around in the evening. On the day we left at around 5pm he saw us going and came running up the corridor to shake our hands, ask us if we enjoyed our holiday and hoping to see us next year. Breakfast in the Fountain View is very busy - as there's no other place to eat - and the staff are constantly working to clear tables, seat people arriving, sweeping the floor, and serving tea and coffee. No matter where we were sat we were frequently offered tea and coffee from glass pots, unfortunately the tea and coffee does end up lukewarm in these if you are getting served near the end of the pot. During the busy breakfast and lunch time we would occasionally have items missing off our table such as cups, a spoon or a bottle of water but after a quick mention to one of the staff these were always promptly brought over. There was a large choice for breakfast, and I loved the stations on a morning. There was an Omelette station, Pancake station, fried egg station, poached egg station, and you could get boiled eggs from the hot plates. There were cereals, large numbers of pastries, bread, cheese, toast, cold meats, fruit, different kinds of juice, and of course lots of hot food such as bacon (beef), sausages (chicken), potatoes. I loved eating the Omelettes, followed by a tasty fruit cocktail which consisted of apples and melons. Lunch time was also full of choice, the stations turning into Toasted Sandwich stations, Grilled Chicken, Pizza station etc. I can't see how anyone could complain of the food here, everything was well presented and tasty. Booking at included A La Carte restaurants was very easy, especially if you are not hell bent on eating at a specific restaurant on a specific date and time. I completely forgot to book on our first morning and remembered about 2pm. I wandered up and got booked for the Marhaba that evening, the Stone Grill the day after, and the Casa Bianca the day after that. We spent our days on the beach. The staff here are friendly. On our first morning the man on the towel hut could tell we were knew and explained about the towels, the waiter service start time etc. We wanted some water and we went to get us some despite the bar not being open, and he placed the towels onto the beds for us, and we gave him a £2 tip. The next day we didn't get down to the beach until about 11:30-12:00pm due to myself having some sort of reaction to the sun and my face becoming swollen. We were surprised to see he had kept a bed for us right by the sea! We would often get to the beach around 8am and there were good choices for beds however I can't say the same for the main pool. On the way to breakfast at this time it does appear that all the beds are taken, but this is just me observing whilst walking past. On the morning of our Luxor trip I watched someone at 6:15am taking towels out onto the beds, so it appears this 8am other reviewers have mentioned doesn't happen, but like I said I didn't spend anytime by the pools. The lovely Ahmed provided us drinks on the beach all day. He runs up and down the beach, remembering everyone's orders and collecting empty glasses etc. Having been to places such as New York, where you HAVE to tip regardless, I was more than happy to give him a pound or too every so often. You do still recieve service without tipping however! He learnt our drinks order (Virgin Pina Colada and Diet Pepsi) and so a thumbs up or a wave from a distance and he would bring us our 'usual.' Around 3pm we would go back to our swim up room which was facing the beach, and we also got offered drinks here, bliss! I highly recommend taking a snorkel and beach shoes. The coral off the jetty is unbelieveable and we loved swimming around there each day. There were a couple of days when purple jellyfish invaded everywhere, including the shallow water, but we were told they were harmless and when they were washed up onto the shore the staff would pick them up and throw them back in. On an evening we would have a drink in the Lobby Bar where each day glasses of champagne were served between about 6:30-7:30pm. At this time though the bar is busy with people waiting to go home, and it's also the place you get free wi-fi in so you often get people with their iPads and phones checking emails etc. We ventured into the Piano bar a couple of times, it gets busy in here and if you go later you won't get a seat. Waiter service is provided here, and after we tipped we also recieved little dishes of crisps. The Piano/Guitar player Nick was very good, and he can play just about any song you request. We never went to the big tent to see any of the 'Lady Gaga' style acts as it's just not our thing so can't comment on that. If you like a bit of peace and quiet then venture down to the Adults Bar, we would sit here on an evening with a cocktail listening to the crickets and enjoy the peace and quiet. I did wake up one morning with a slight 'funny tummy' however I can honestly say this is not down to the food at all, and is most likely spread by the other guests. Overall this hotel was fantastic. It's clean and modern and the staff here really do make this place shine. If anything they are understaffed to deal with the volume of people, you always see them everywhere cleaning and working hard. (gemgem5, 07-04-2012)
