If you are looking for a budget hotel that's conveniently located then this is it. It has a fab roof terrace overlooking Luxor temple with heaters provided in the evening.
The quality of the rooms varies, ours wasn't too bad, but another couple had to change theirs, so check the room before committing and change it if you need to. I did find it very cold at night in December and the blankets weren't really enough.
The breakfast was a bit limited but they do cook eggs fresh for you. There's also a restaurant downstairs and you can order and eat on the roof terrace all day. It's a dry hotel, no alcohol unless you manage to find some of your own from a nearby shop.
The reception can arrange excursions and guides for you at a reasonable price so definitely worth doing that, our hot air balloon ride was only about £35.

Imposing and impressive temple ruins which are reasonably priced to visit. It is also open in the evening and lit up if you wish to see that side of it. Take a look at the avenue of Sphinxes which is being put back into position after thousands of years.

I think this is the best temple to visit in Luxor. We visited late afternoon with the sun just starting to set which gave the stones a warm, red glow. It's worth paying for a guide, but don't pay too much. The carvings are very clear and the size and scale of the temple is awe-inspiring.

The Luxor Hilton (it is actually situated in Karnak) is an excellent holiday resort and spa. While the standard rooms are too small and not entirely well kept, the better (executive) rooms are excellent, with ample space and balconies or small gardens in front.
Upon arrival we were greeted with a cocktail and our lage was transferred to the room. The hotel is situated right next to the river Nile which together with the two outdoor pools creates an atmosphere of being by the sea when one is in fact in the desert. Speaking of the pools, the lower pool while nice is a bit too small for the amount of guests that sometimes congregate here, while the infinity pool in the spa area is one of the calmest places in Upper Egypt.
Service is attentive and reasonably priced. The variety of restaurants and bars in the resort make it unlikely that one gets bored by food and drink and there is a regular shuttle bus into Luxor stopping at the major sights.
All in all this place offers excellent value for money and the opportunity to connect culture with relaxation by the poolside.

We went to Sofra after reading the listing in the Lonley Planet and had an absolutely brilliant time. The restaurant is set in a tall 1930s building and taking a seat on the beautifully decorated terrace makes you feel like you've just stepped back in time.
The food is full of colour and flavour and between the 3 of us we probably tried about a third of the menu and were not disappointed. If I can say one bad thing about the food it is that the meatballs in tomato sauce were not properly cooked. However, other than that, we had an amazing dining experience which we ended with a sheesha, Turkish coffee and Egyptian sweets which all came to less than £30 (€36) for three diners.
Will definitely go back!

Found this place fascinating - tombs are close together, some closed, the pictures & colours in some are amazing after all these years. If you are feeling really energetic you can climb up half a hill on a ladder to see a round tomb.
Paid extra for a hot air balloon trip on another day which went over the area, you saw some less popular sites as well.

We visited here to try out the Indian Restaurant (with the rather common place name "Taj Mahal"). The food served by polite staff was good but not exceptional. The surroundings were in keeping with the standard of the hotel.

Spent one Christmas there. Hotel in 2 sections, the old colonial style part (full of old world charm) and the new typically modern (well almost) section. Provides a good base for exploring the famous sites - Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, Tutankamun. Many Nile cruise boats can be seen on the Quay side. Tropical gardens provide pleasant strolling.
