The Navigation bar has changed! Where are all my tabs?
The main tabs at the top of every Qype page now represent our most popular place categories. We've done this to make it easier and quicker for you to find the places you're looking for. The links to Guides, Groups and People are still there they're just off the right slightly, under the red line near the top of the page. The link to your profile page (My Qype) has moved right to the top of the page, just above the search box.
The navigation bar with all the city names in it has gone. What's the best way to switch to a particular city now?
At the top of every page, just to the right of the Qype logo, is the name of the area you are currently browsing and next to that is a link which reads 'Change'. Clicking that link displays a menu of the most relevant countries/cities/areas for you to choose from as well as a link through to a more detailed list that contains lots more places. There's also a search bar which you can use to go directly to the area you want to explore.
When I click the MORE tab in the Category navigation I get a long list with tick boxes. What do I do with it?
These are all the categories (and their sub-categories) we couldn't fit into the main navigation bar. You'll notice that the categories that have a tick next to them are the ones which appear in your navigation bar. If you'd like to replace some of those default categories with ones you think you'll want easier access to, all you have to do is untick the box and then tick the box next to the category you want to see in its place. Once you're happy with your selection just click 'Update' and your navigation bar will refresh. Remember, you can select a maximum of six categories to display in your navigation bar (any more and we'd have to widen the whole site!).
There's a new module called My History, what's that for?
The 'My History' module automatically records where you've been and what you've looked for on Qype, so if you want to go back and check or reread something all you have to do is click on 'recently reviewed' or 'recent searches' and you'll get an up-to-date list of your Qype activity. Just click on the link you want and you'll be taken straight back to that page.
What happened to the 'helpful' and 'well written' buttons?
They're still there, they've just had slight makeovers. If you want to show your appreciation for a great review you can now use the 'vote up' and vote down' buttons (see below), and if you'd like to tell someone that their review was particularly helpful to you, or you thought it was well written then you can do that using the Compliments tool where we've added a 'You're a lifesaver' and 'Nicely put' compliments to our list of feedback messages.
What are the 'helpful' and 'not helpful' buttons at the bottom of every review, and how do I use them?
We've added these buttons so you if you read a particularly informative and useful review then you can 'vote' for it by clicking the 'helpful' button. These votes are then counted and other users can choose to filter the reviews for a place by the 'most helpful' - with the review that has received the most positive votes appearing at the top of the list.
Of course if you think that a review doesn't have as much information as you'd like then you can click 'not helpful' and the review will lose a vote. It's important to note though, that a review cannot receive less than zero votes.
I just received a point when I received a compliment. What's going on there?
As we've removed the 'helpful' and 'well written' buttons we wanted to make sure that people were still rewarded for being good Qypers. So now, if you send another Qyper a compliment he or she will receive a Qype Point for doing such a great job.
Where has the 500 points Insider level gone?
It's gone the way of the dinosaurs. We wanted to simplify the Insider structure a little bit and make it easier to understand. We look at like this: if Qype Insider equates to Jedi, and Ninja equates to Jedi Master, then the 500 point level was kind of like the Ewoks - nice to have around but a bit pointless.
Have the requirements for becoming a Ninja changed?
Yes. Previously if you wrote 60 reviews and had 1000 points you automatically became a Ninja, but as Qype grows we felt that it was really important that needed to know that if someone is a Qype Ninja then that person is a fantastic reviewer, someone who really knows their stuff, the best of the best. So while Insider status is still automatic, now once you reach 60 reviews and 1000 points, someone at Qype HQ will take a quick look at your account to see if you have what it takes to weild the nunchucks of power (you dont' actually get any nunchucks, that would be irrepsonsible of us).
There's loads of information on what it takes to become a Qype Ninja on this page.
Have the requirements to become a Qype Insider changed?
No. Once you reach 250 points (and as long as you've written at least 15 reviews) then you'll automatically join the ranks of Qype Insider. If you're after information on how Qype Points work then all that information is here.
What is Qype?
Qype is a site for people to discover more about their city and to share the experiences, knowledge and opinions of the places they have been.
How does it work?
Qype is a community, which means that most of the information here comes from the users. Once someone signs up to Qype they can contribute by writing reviews, creating personal Guides, interacting on the forums, and leaving comments for other users. Even if you’re not a member you can still browse the site for information (but to get the most out of Qype you really should sign up).
How is Qype different from other social networking sites?
We're all about people and places. So it's easy to…
Find a great restaurant to go to tonight
Tell everyone what the restaurant was like
See the other users who liked that restaurant and see the other places they’d recommend
Talk about which are the best places to eat in your town
And Qype isn't just about reviewing restaurants and bars; it's about those unquantifiable elements that make your city so awesome.
How can I find out about future site enhancements?
Keep an eye on our blog, that’s where we let everyone know what’s going on in the world of Qype.
Does it cost money to participate?
Absolutely not. Qype is 100% free.
Is Qype international?
Qype currently has data for places in the following countries: UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, and Austria, although it is possible to add reviews for countries worldwide.
You can write reviews in English, French or German.
What is a Qype Insider?
Once you collect 250 Qype points (and written over 15 reviews) you become a Qype Insider. You can find more info here.
How do I collect Qype points?
Points are the currency of Qype. They allow the community to see at a glance which Qypers are the newbies as well as the hardened Qype veterans.
So how do you gain points?
What's a Qype Ninja?
A Ninja is someone who has earned 1000 Qype points on the site. Once you become a Qype Ninja you will also begin to be invited to some of our exclusive Qype Ninja events. There’s more info on Qype Ninjas on this page.
What is a tag?
A tag is a word that you can add to a place or event to give it meaning personal to you, to help you group places and things together, and to help other people find your review. For example you could tag all the bars close to your office with the phrase “near work” to help you locate them later, or you could tag a restaurant as ‘romantic’ to help other Qypers when they’re searching for something specific.
How do I add a tag?
Once you've reviewed a place or event tag you'll see a space to enter your tags. Just enter the terms you’d like to tag your review with. Separate each one with a space or join two words together in one tag by using double quotes, e.g. "French cuisine".
How do I remove a tag I've added?
To remove a tag find your review and click ‘Edit’ at the bottom. You’ll then be able to edit the tag field and add or remove as many tags as you like.
How do I add someone as a contact?
That's an easy one: just visit the profile page belonging to the person you'd like to add and click the 'Add as contact' link. Once the user accepts your invite they will become a contact of yours.
What happens when I add someone as a contact?
When you add someone as your contact that user’s actions will be added to the activity stream on your My Qype page. After that you will be notified of any new actions they make on the site.
How do I delete a contact?
Go to that Qyper’s profile page and click the ‘Remove contact’ link.
Who can view my activity?

How do I send a message to another Qyper?
Click on the photo of the Qype member you wish to send a message to and their profile will appear. The "Send message" option is underneath the photo.
What can I review on Qype?
You can review a place, business, service, or event, as long as it has a real physical location. For example you might want to write a review of
Are there things I should not review?
Things that don’t have a physical location in the real world (that means no website, no film or TV programmes, and please only write reviews of places/services you have personally experienced; Qype is about your opinion, not your mother in law’s (although she can write too).
How do I submit a review?
On every place page you will see a bright orange button that reads ‘Add Your Review’. Just click this link and you will be taken to the spot on the page where you can type in your review. Once you’re happy with your review (and you’ve awarded a star rating and included a few tags) click the Save review button and, bingo, your review will be posted on the site.
What if I get a message that my location cannot be found?
In some rare cases, Qype may not be able to pinpoint the geographical location you’ve entered. Don’t give up, send us a quick note to us at feedback@qype.co.uk. And we will do the legwork for you (we have got fabulous legs).
How do I find a Place to review?
At the top of every page you’ll find the Qype search tool. To find the place you’re looking for type the name of the place in the left hand side of the tool, and the location (town or city works best) into the right hand side. Click ‘Search’ and Qype will try and find your place in the database, if it can’t find it then you can add the place yourself.
A few tips:
Use the ‘Search for’ field to look for
If the field is left empty, all reviews located under the "where" field are displayed. An unlimited search of London will locate, for example, everything listed in London.
Several search terms locate reviews that contain all of the terms entered. For example, a search for "hotel smoking" will only locate reviews with hotel and smoking in them.
The results of your search will be sorted by:
Someone has unfairly reviewed a place I am connected with. What should I do?
That depends on what's been said. If you feel that a reviewer has a differing opinion about your business then we recommend that you give yourself a 24 hour 'cooling down' period before addressing the reviewer's concerns within the comments for that particular review. Often it's a very positive step for a business to address a customer's complaints on Qype as it shows you are proactive. However, if you genuinely feel that you or your place of work has been defamed on Qype then that is against our Community Guidelines and you should use the ‘offensive content' button to let us know what has been said, giving us as much detail as possible, and we will investigate the issue.
Can I still review something if I have a vested interest in it?
Sure. All we ask is that you write a fair and balanced review and that you clearly identify your connection to the business by claiming the business (see below). You can find more information in our Community Guidelines.
Can I edit or delete my content from the site?
Yes. Once you have found the review you’d like to edit you’ll see a link at the bottom of the review called Edit. Clicking this link takes you to a fully editable version of your review. Next to the Edit link is a Delete link which will remove your review from the site entirely.
Comments
All Qypers can post comments about a review that has already been written. Please don’t comment on the reviewer or their photo (be nice!). The reviewer can delete any comments added at any time.
Favourite places
If you love a place simply click on "A favourite place". Your photo will the appear on the place page, and if a new review is added, this will be shown in your profile.
What is feedback?
Feedback enables you to thank other Qypers for a helpful or well written review. The reviewer will be notified of your feedback via a Qype message.
What’s a Guide?
We all have a list of our favourite places in our heads. Whether it’s the best places for a drink after work, a sandwich at lunchtime, or just those places we haven’t got round to visiting yet. A Qype Guide is a place for you to store and organize that information.
The Guides created by other Qypers are public; so you can check out other Guides for inspiration. An overview of all the existing Guides is here: http://www.qype.co.uk/uk/lists.
How do I create and add places to a Guide?
