than any one else, including kamikaze pedestrians on Oxford St and BMW drivers. Since the great switch to cycling in London a couple years ago, many people seem to think that a helmet is somehow the equivalent of body armor and can replace awareness of the other traffic as their primary safety device.

The other day I had a go at someone who cut up a friend and me crossing the road on foot, who passed within a few inches in front of my friend. He lightly punched this helmet-mensch on the arm, more automatic protective response than lashing out, and did not push him over. The idiot came back, slapped my friend on the back of the head and screamed at him about putting he, helmet-mensch in danger!

Of course I had to shout back, mainly along the lines of how his helmet wasn’t going to protect him very long if carried on cycling so discourteously, and I think the fact that I was with a bike myself calmed him down somewhat. Such unnecessary aggro, due partly to all kinds of traffic jostling for space on London roads.
