I’ve been a Lord of the Rings/Tolkien fan since I was about 10. My trip to Oxford to see his college, the pubs he drank in and his grave was definately a highlight of being in the Uk. My next mission is to go and visit Sylvia Plath/Ted Hughes house in London.

I have always been curious regarding Tolkien and places. In Lincolnshire there is a village called Bag Enderby. Somewhere else with a familiar ring but forget..it will come to me.

That sounds like too much of a coincidence! Most of the things I know about the UK are from reading books as a kid. So places like Bag Enderby where nice little people live in comfortable holes in the ground is exactly what I expected..

It was a year of so ago that I went there but yes, I reckon that pub was on the tour. I had a beer in each of his main pubs and went to his college as well. I don’t think those pubs have changed much. I think it was the Eagle and Child that was his main one. (With C.S. Lewis and William Calos Williams)

Being a big kid and having a huge collection of Tiggers..my nickname..I love AA Milne and found this:
The Poohsticks Bridge is a bridge located in Ashdown Forest, close to the village of Hartfield, East Sussex, England. This is considered to be the bridge on which A. A. Milne and his son Christopher Robin first played the game. The game can still be played there to this day, but visitors are advised to bring their own sticks, as previous participants have rather denuded the surrounding area of suitable material.

I seemingly inspired a writer once.
I used to take a stall to Beverley (Yorks) Christmas Market and had to dress in Victorian Costume. It was cold and I wore my black medieval cloak (similar). I had a customer each year who would spend a fortune yet stare all the time and make me feel edgy.
Someone told me she lived there, and she was a well known author called Highsmith, and she had written a series of fantasy/history books using Beverley as the setting. I got them from the library read them and next year she spent a couple of hundred with me so I said I had read and enjoyed her books. She then told me I was Elvira..one of her main characters..read the description she said :0)
Not exactly literature but…

Yes Oxford is a great place to find the early hang outs of stellar literary types - I popped into the Eagle in Child, famed for being the pub of choice for Tolkien and C.S Lewis.

Ha well remember I was wearing a long black medieval cloak (Scottish widow style) and my hair was shorter at the time..about elbow length so was dark and curly. (now it is past my bottom again it has straightened out). I have blue eyes too which apparently is unusual if you are dark haired..maybe it was just the cloak.
I wandered into the Minster for a warm in the cloak..one of the vergers said it was the first time that he had seen someone look as if they were dressed right to be in there :)Templar edited this post 17 July 2008

You certainly sound as if you cut a striking picture!! Yep blue eyes and dark hair are certainly an unusual mix. I guess sometimes its what strikes a chord with people - I was 'muse’ for a couple of songs a while back - only a local band in Manchester but that was amusing. Can’t rememeber the name of the group even now - but I know one of the tracks was about a mermaid!? - weird what others see in you sometimes.
Its actually really intriguing when you think of all the classics etc,. you have read and all those leading ladies must have been inspired probably by someone quite ordinary….
