and why? ok it’s hard to say - maybe top 3 then:
1) the grove, leeds - see my review, basically, the best selection of ale, music and people around!
2) the white cross - location, staff are quite friendly too…
3) sadly now defunkt, but bruins in fallowfield was always a fave of mine - table football, bands, and a great selection of beartown brewery stuff on tab - including ginger bear, bearly legal…. etc etc.
I’ve attached a few more faves of late!

The Coach & Horses, Clapham
Why? Amazing people, service, food, beers & it’s only 2 minutes from my house!
Of all time? That’s hard!
It’s largely because in my case pubs have tended to wax and wane rather - once-favourite establishments being taken over by poorer new management, for example.
So, I would say my current favourites include:
- The Blue Anchor, East Aberthaw. Thatch, great real-ale, good food and friendly service and welcome.
- Evening Star, Brighton. Can be very crowded (it’s small), but it’s hard to beat as a real-ale venue.
- Prestonville, Brighton. Nice people and real-ale, and never too crowded.

in recent times; the Tap and Spile, just off Broad St., Birmingham. Situated on the canal, good atmosphere, good ale, but even a decent selection of lagers
I’m beginning to get really into z*ub - or the sofa bar, as people refer to it… the most OTT collection of disgusting sofas ever…but they work really well in this place. No real ale, however…
1) The White Lion in Sheffield (London Road) has an ever changing range of ales, has many snug little rooms and nooks, offers a pool table, free live music and quizzes, and lovely regulars. I have fond memories of this place.
2) St. Aldates Tavern in Oxford (see my review) is my first pub in this town I connected to, and up to now I haven’t been disappointed yet.
Whitefriars in Coventry - brilliant building, nice Ales, with two - three guest ones all the time, and the best bit is weird, random rooms built into the timber-framed 17th century place - great for groups, and of varying size too.
Plus, there is a “chicken & chips” place next door - very helpful, when leaving pub, after the “odd” one or two (ish) beers at midnight.
For historical reasons (and because of the “real ale” being served there), my favourite pub is Ye Olde Mitre in London.
Oh, The Newcastle Arms is excellent for selection, range and regular changes of barrel. Not the most comfortable, unless you are happy to stand. Knowledgable friendly staff, and located not far from St James’ Park in Newcastle upon Tyne (what a coincidence!) I like The Cumberland (Ouseburn in Byker) for atmosphere.
By the way, you may or may not have found a useful web site for proper beer called “beerintheevening” which you can search by area or rating! Very useful.
My two favourite…
Very partial to the Bree Louise near Euston Station, the Swan in Enford (Wiltshire), and the Ship and Shovell near Charing Cross Station.
Ah, I’ve wanted to go to the Ship and Shovell loads of times but it’s closed on Sundays…!
The Free Trade! Go before it’s too late!
Touch far from Hamburg… but next time I’m up that way, hell yeah!!
