Qypewatch
A group devoted to exposing blatant self-promotion. You know the type, owners and friends who add very short reviews that have little content and always say things like "the best in town!", "food to die for!" and "best food I've ever tasted!". Let's protect the value of our honest comment and criticism on Qype.
One review Qypers.

Lots of people seem to register on Qype and do just one review. Usually these people do either a glowing five star review, the 'blatant self promotion' as described in the description of this forum, or they do the opposite they do a really awful review and really run a business down. In the case of the latter I think it's sometimes someone who has had a genuine bad experience at the place and just want to have a 'go' at the business online, or alternatively I sometimes wonder whether they are a competitor of the business or just hold a personal grudge. Either way I think if people post these single reviews and never post another review, say over a timespan of 6 months, then the review should be removed in the interests of fairness. The whole point of Qype is to provide a guide for people looking for the best places to dine, shop, visit etc. and these reviews effectively negate that. What do other Qyper's think?

In principle a good idea, but it would anger a lot of shop owners that have booked premium services from qype. They receive leaflets to hand out to their customers, suggesting to leave a review. Most of those who do will probably do so to do the shop owner a favor without a real interest in qype.
If they then get purged from the system after half a year, guess who won't renew premium services with qype?

Interesting question! We're always working on our moderation to make sure we get rid of spammers and false reviews (believe me, it's just as annoying for us) but I do think some people genuinely only want to write one or two reviews - and I'd be too worried about deleting a genuine user to create blanket rules.
Also, those with more reviews are always weighted more heavily in terms of stars.. :)

I would rather someone had an opportunity also to do an intense RANT sometimes. Unfortunately even ONE star is sometimes inappopriate for some places. Maybe there should be an icon for a turkey or a sledgehammer. There are a lot of places that deserve a decent demolition on Qype. Maybe then there could be a subdivision of Qype "The Demolition Derby" where all the awful places are rounded up and duly chastised under one heading. How 'bout that??

TQ2boyz – We had a “single review” experience after criticising a parent for letting his children run riot in our pub. It became obvious that he had not only given us a really bad review, but also signed on with a different name to rant even further! The moderators agreed and removed the spurious review. I have nothing but praise for the way they do their jobs.
This, by the way, had nothing to do with why we gave up the pub. -

You should have indulged in slagging off the critic for his piss-poor parenting skills. It infuriates us that these people have kids when they REEEEEEEEELY shouldn’t. At one time we thought we would adopt, but we decided we could not, in all honesty, do it without ONE of us giving up working to do a proper parenting job. (Oh yeah, and our child having to rub shoulders with all those drug-addled 12 year old OIKS who were “raised” by a pair of pram-faces who had never thought of contraception (or sterilisation!) as an option!). RANT OVER……

I think ranting’s fine as long as you’re fair too, @TQ2boyz :) Qypers are pretty savvy, I think – they can tell when someone’s annoyed for reasonable reasons and when they’re annoyed for ‘unreasonable’ reasons, which I think would include quite a few of those one-star one-off reviewers…

Yes indeed. Having been in “the trade” for way too many years I can pick out a fake nine point five times out of ten. There is a difference between simply leaving something alone if it’s not to your taste and lambasting something just because you didn’t get EXACTLY what you want (The “It’s All About Meeeeee” crowd). There’s only ONE of all our reviews when I got truly snippy (OK, two if you include Heathrow Terminal Five…) but at least REASON why you are being critical, eh?? Hugs to you all anyway!
