Qype was founded in November of 2005 and since then has gone on to become the largest user-generated local review site in Europe.
The company was founded in Hamburg, Germany by Stephan Uhrenbacher, an internet entrepreneur who was having a hard time finding a local kindergarten for his son. Reasoning that most people value personal recommendations when it comes to something like child care Stephan decided to build a community where people could relate their experiences, swap stories and give feedback on every aspect of their everyday lives.
Being a business traveller Stephan was beginning to see the advantages of having a network of trusted reviews and recommendations at your fingertips when visiting new cities.
And so Qype was born! Now, whether you need to impress your in-laws with a fancy but inexpensive restaurant; want a good local plumber right away; or maybe you’re visiting friends in another city... Qype’s international community is there to help you out.
Here’s a few examples of how people are using Qype
Of course, Qype isn’t just about discovering new places, it’s also great for sharing your own experiences and swapping recommendations for the best (and worst) places you know.
Qype is home to a huge community of passionate and opinionated users who love to let people know their thoughts on where they ate lunch, which electrician they use, and even where they buy their underwear.
As well as writing reviews Qype users can upload photographs of the places they’ve visited, join groups to discuss their particular interests, and create personal lists of their favourite spots.
Qype has gone from strength to strength since launching in 2005, and the site now covers more than 6,000 towns and cities across Europe and has more than seven million unique visitors per month.
Qype UK was launched in July 2007 and was quickly followed by Qype France in January 2008. This means that Qype is now the only truly pan-European local review site out there and is able to offer its jetsetting users a handy multi-lingual platform.
