I don't think that there is anywhere that uses a broadband will be free, there are far and few places. If you live here and there is library nearby you provided you are a member they allow one hour's free internet . I think that is enough for QYPING any way.

I just read the other day that up to 1/4 of all wifi routers in London are not secured. I wonder if that's true.

  • 15-01-2008, 16:31

The amount of unsecured wi-fi in London is scary. I've noticed it more now I have an iPhone and it's automatically detecting them as I walk round. I only have to walk around the West End for a couple of minutes before an unprotected signal pops up.

I just think a lot of people don't even know how to protect their wi-fi, or they have it set up automatically and don't bother changing the default password which is a godsend for hackers.

Actually I don't think it's scary at all. I run my AP open deliberately, and I know lots of people hop onto it.

Bruce Schneier makes the point more eloquently than me, but I've always thought the same. Providing basic WiFi access for people is quite like making them a cup of tea, or having the heating on. Your computer should be secure, not the network - after all, what happens when you take your computer to the open network at any of the places in this list?

The FON concept is really interesting, and they allow you to either share your WiFi connection, or not. If you don't, you can't then hop onto any of the other FON hotspots for free either - your choice.

Personally, I do it because I feel like I'm doing some random strangers a favour, and I do believe in karma...

I tend not to piggy back on other peoples wifi but i do think the government or mayor of London should be thinking seriously about providing Londoners with free wifi. Google are doing it with the city of San Francisco. Why can't the same happen here?

Substitute out the x£million tax cash we spend on things like designing olympic logos and put it towards something useful like free wifi.

I do the same as Phil (leave it open deliberately). You never know when a person will be passing by your house, get shot and have no one around to help but their handy laptop/N800 (the shooter took their cellphone) and your wifi connection to email someone and ask for help. Serious stuff.

A friend who is a computer expert has had his wireless hacked by a lad of about 13 every week for close on a year, he says he is totally at a loss on how to stop this lad. Unless someone sits and downloads great amounts of music chowing bandwidth using your wireless conns, leaving it open is not a problem.

For a better signal at home, sit next to an open window as there is less interference.
It sounds silly, BUT IT DOES WORK!!!

Also, for anyone using wifi at home, make sure your password is activated and very well encrypted (mine is a mixture on numbers and random letters!)
