Day trip from London: Pub, Cathedral and Dessert in Winchester

It only takes an hour to get to Winchester from the west side of London. It makes a really nice day to go to the Flower Pots Inn in nearby Cheriton for a tasty lunch and some locally-brewed ale, then head into Winchester to see the historic Cathedral. Stop off for coffee and dessert at the Bridge Patisserie before heading back.

Forget fruit machines, it's just a couple of rooms of raw wood and - in winter - a large open fireplace that fills the place with the sweet smell of real logs burning (so much...” more...

It has connections to the...” more...

The other thing you can do - best done on a perfect, hot summer day - (ie not like now) is to stroll along the riverside path to the church and almshouse of St Cross.

It’s a really lovely walk, and you can ask for your traveller’s alms of bread and ale at the Almshouse.
