great when you need a lot of food and a great atmosphere, washed down with loads of beer. If you visit Windhoek, don’t miss Joes, where the portions are huge and the vibe electric and full of fun, the crowds are huge. Keep it up, I have been a fan for years.

Have been eating in this fish reaurant a grilled shark steak (around the year 1995). Food and restaurant were both excellent. Shark steak is still offered in this fine place - so when you are in Swakopmund at the Namibian coast you should treat yourself to some fabulous seafood here.

Thank you for a pleasant stay at your property. We have had a great experience of Namibia and the wildlife here at Kowas. I am very happy having the opportunity of bringing my daughter with me and to be exposed to the environment and the hunting. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your life and showing us how you live in this great land of Africa.

Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport (Windhoek, by allthatjazz)

3 Points out of 5

The Windhoek airport is a small but fully functional airport. I've flown to and from there 4 times and everything has gone as planned, uneventful but no complaints.

I would have awarded it more stars if not for the fact that we get overcharged by the rental companies every single time we rent from the airport. We have tried different car rental companies and it is the same every single time. We find ourselves holding on to rental documents, gas station receipts, any repairs or tire damages even though we have comprehensive insurance. We even had a situation where we got charged for damages to the car even though when we checked in, we insisted (and thank God for this) that the car be checked thoroughly and a copy of the final check be given to us. When we found out what the charges were for and contested it, we were told that the man who checked our car in, inspected and signed for it obviously "did not see" the damages to the car before he signed!

We won and got out money back but it's a hassle and it happens every single time.

Other than that, I would say the airport is clean, fast and effective.

Large guest house right on the shore of the lagoon. The rooms are to a really good standard. Mine had a balcony where you can sit and watch the sun go down and I think all the others do too. The bed was excellent which I guess is one of our main needs in a hotel. There is also a sun deck on top of the building. Free wireless internet access. The owner is very helpful and even contacted me before I arrived to see if I needed collection from the airport. Ample car parking. My only issue was breakfast which was verycontinental with only cereal bread and cold meats. You could ask for eggs, but I prefer the English Breakfast style. There is not much in the way of hotels/guest houses in Walvis and I would certainly recommend this one.

Dune 7 Quad Biking (Walvis Bay, by grahamdickinson)

5 Points out of 5

Quad biking in the sand dunes around Walvis Bay was one of the most enjoyable and exciting things I have done in ages. I don’t remember the name of the adventure company that runs the bikes but to get there, follow airport signs from Walvis Bay and about 2Km before the airport turn left signposted Dune 7 and Swakopmund. Follow the signs to Dune 7 and when you get to the dunes you will see a building at the end of the road. This is where you pay, collect your quad bikes and your guide and head off into the dunes. I went with a work colleague early in the morning and as there were only two of us our guide took us off for an hour at full throttle. We learned how to tackle very steep dunes up and down and tried a few jumps and generally went mad and had a ball. My colleague who had been once before said that because there were kids on the last trip it was very slow and careful. In other words they cater to the customer’s requirements which is great. It means if you are a family you can have a gentle wander through the dunes to the sea and back or if you are adrenalin junkies you can go hell for leather. We took an hour which I think is the right length of trip first time out. Next time we intend to take two hours as our guide has a challenging route he knows. It really is an experience not to be missed. You can even get a cold beer when you get back to the reception area.

Walvis Bay International Airport (Walvis Bay, by grahamdickinson)

2 Points out of 5

Possibly the smallest International Airport in the world. Certainly in my travel experience, the least efficient and most annoying airport I have ever visited. To enter the country you have to pass through one of only two immigration desks. To be fair with the amount of people entering every day, two desks should be enough, but it seems that the Namibian immigration officials see it as their personal mission to make it as long winded and as hard to get into the country as possible. It really does seem that they want to keep tourist numbers to a minimum. Anyway going back out was even worse. There were about 10 people before me in the queue for the only open check in desk. I cannot conceive of a way in which they could have made the process of checking in slower. I am sure I could have learned a new language or invented the formula for a new efficient endless energy source in the time it took for me to get to the desk. When I did get there I was 4kg over which was the same as on the way in. That wasn't good enough so I moved out of the queue to repack my bags so that the extra 4kg was in my hand luggage. When I got back to the check in desk I asked if I could put my now heavy hand luggage in the hold with my main bag and this was fine with them, but I think they may have missed the irony of this slightly. Anyway after check in I did sit here at the cafe which is very clean and pleasant and I'm drinking a cold beer served by a very nice lady which kind of made up for the bureaucratically crap. It's a beautiful country, but if you are coming, be ready to stand in line and shuffle along at their pace.

2 Points out of 5

I have eaten in many Spur restaurants in Africa and this has to be the worst overall. The food is actually OK, it's just everything else. The setting is a first floor dingy unwelcoming place above a street that is derelict at night and quite intimidating. Don't go in thinking you are a customer or you will be disappointed. To the staff you are an unwelcome intrusion on their evening. To expect someone to come back to the table to ask how your meal is would be unrealistic. That doesn't mean they dont expect you to pay extra for this special service and my waiter even asked to add a tip to the bill.
