Qype Does London 115: Wimbledon, Gravity and Gardening
WHAT'S HAPPENING THIS WEEK?
Our Qype Summer Party is a week today, and we're starting to get excited! We sent out our invitations on Monday, so check your inboxes to see whether you made it onto our guestlist. And make sure you're following the #qypesummerparty hashtag to help us put together our karaoke playlist and keep up with all the action on the night.
Elsewhere this week, we've got a family pass worth £130 up for grabs for The Big Feastival on Clapham Common next weekend. Head here for the full lowdown and details of how to enter, and to find out more about a special buy-one-get-one-free offer for Qypers too.
Feel like splashing out now that it's almost the end of the month? At Seven Park Place in St. James', you can get six courses by Michelin-starred chef William Drabble for £65. Click here to book.
This week's banner image is by Johnny Burke. Take a peek at the original here, or check out his others over on Flickr.
FRIDAY
Rock Lobsta is a pop-up 'disco bistro' which will be serving up seafood next door to Shoreditch boutique Luna & Curious until Sunday. Expect a menu featuring lobster, crab and crayfish, plus music and art, in a venue celebrating the British seaside, from 1950s Skegness to saucy postcards.
Over at the Barbican Pit Theatre in Moorgate, we'll be getting dreamy with Duckie Lullaby (pictured). Put on your pyjamas and book a single, double or triple bed for a night of soporific serenades and storytelling, followed by a snooze and then breakfast the next morning.
Under the A12 Flyover in Homerton, Folly for a Flyover starts from Friday, a six-week programme of waterside cinema and performances, from Disney classics to anime and cult sci-fi.
SATURDAY
Gravity may be what keeps our feet on the ground, but its also a show featuring dance, physical theatre, circus and installation. Part of the Greenwich & Docklands Festival, it's taking place all weekend in the gardens of the Old Royal Naval College, and it's free.
The Clove Club are at the helm for the first week of Restaurants in Residence, a month-long pop-up in one of the first ever office buildings at Canary Wharf, scheduled for demolition once the project is over.
At The Roundhouse in Camden, it's all about the masked Mexican wrestling at Lucha Future (pictured). A dirty dozen will be battling it out in crazy costumes, and there'll even be live music soundtracking all the apocalyptic action.
AND BEYOND
Want to feel wholesome again after a weekend of overdoing it? On Sunday it's the third annual Meditation in the Park shindig at Russia Dock Woodland in Rotherhithe, a free, family-friendly village fête with yoga, meditation masterclasses, picnics and prizes.
Also on Sunday, at Hampstead Heath Summer Festival, you'll be able to browse over fifty stalls, have your face painted, hear live music, show some animals some love at the petting zoo and cheer on your hot favourite to win at the 'Pup Idol' dog show.
Then on Wednesday, it's the Qype Summer Party at 93 Feet East on Brick Lane, complete with copious amounts of rum punch, karaoke and other entertainments. See you there!
QYPER OF THE WEEK
BE THE FIRST TO REVIEW
Just south of the river, a new patch of leafy green has sprung up from a slice of neglected London land. The Urban Physic Garden is a collaboration between designers, growers and volunteers which brings an array of healing herbs and endangered species into the community.
Over the summer, there'll be free lunchtime talks as well as workshops, film screenings and debates, while popular pop-up The Rambling Restaurant will be serving up snacks from a decommissioned ambulance. Get down there and get your hands dirty, or just find out more about the role that plants play in science, medicine and health.
P.S. Well done to deCabbit for getting in there so speedily with last week's First to Review, Paul A. Young in Soho.
BEST OF LONDON
Wimbledon is here again. Get in on the action at All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club, but first you'll have to brave the queue (don't worry, we've got a guide covering everything you need to know).
Didn't get your mitts on those tickets you were after? Spend an afternoon swotting up on the sport at Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum (pictured), or soaking up the atmosphere on the hill.
Need feeding and watering once it's game, set and match? Le Piaf, The Crooked Billet and Nine Million Bicycles are all nearby options with rave Qype reviews. Been inspired to take up tennis yourself? Check out our guide to the best public tennis courts in London, and we've also got a list of indoor tennis courts for when the sun's not shining.
