Qype Does London: Issue 6
ROLL ON FRIDAY
We know, Easter seems like a long time ago already, but we're nearly at the weekend already and this week Qype Does London brings you architecture made from booze, the ultimate pupper master, and free ice cream. And, if that wasn't enough, we've got more free tickets to give away, just click here to see how you can get on the guest list for Feeling Gloomy, Islington's premier miserabalist pop night.
Don't forget to check our blog for more London goings on, and you can always email us on QDL@qype.com if you want to give us any tips or suggestions for future newsletters.
See you next week.
P.S. Our banner image is from the Monsters Inked exhibition we mentioned last week and comes courtesy of Tiki_Chris.
FRIDAY
The Italian Film Festival takes over some of the capital's best independent cinemas for its sixteenth outing this weekend. Highlights of the programme include romantic comedy Black and White, and the small town murder mystery The Girl by the Lake (think Inspector Morse meets Twin Peaks but with better suits).
Staying with the cinematic theme Exploding Cinema is a coalition of filmmakers with one foot firmly planted in the underground and a passion for DIY screenings in low/no budget venues. They'll be showing a selection of work from San Francisco’s Disposable Film Festival alongside a live performance from Belgian duo Cinema Sonore.
And if you thought things couldn't get weirder than avant-garde, DIY cinema in Herne Hill, how about Alcoholic Architecture? From the people who bought you Scratch n Sniff films this "walk in cloud of breathable cocktail" features gin and tonic mist, giant limes, and massive straws.
SATURDAY
Cliff and Leonard are the melancholic masterminds behind Feeling Gloomy, a club night dedicated to all things angsty, heartbroken and generally maudlin. We've got a pair of tickets to give away to their Bowie night in Islington this Saturday. Just email us on QDL@qype.com by Friday lunchtime and tell us who your favourite miserable person is for a chance to win.
If you're still afraid of the Mysterons and used to have a bit of a crush on Marina then read on, otherwise you can just skip to the next bit. Yes, Gerry Anderson is in town to sign copies of the reprinted 'Century 21' books which collects all the classic stories (Thunderbirds, Stingray, Captain Scarlet, Joe 90 etc) in two ultra-nerdy, but very handsome volumes. F.A.B!
One of London's best live music venues, the Brixton Windmill, plays host to New York's pop-punk collective Bridge and Tunnel this weekend as part of their fortnightly Staying South nights. Support comes from the equally caustic Ok Pilot and Neil Sutherland & Friends.
AND BEYOND...
Founded by the publicly-funded organisation Alternative Arts, Alternative Fashion Week kicks off next Monday and provides a much-needed platform for independent designers to unleash their creations. Plus there's a fully stocked fashion market in case you have some cash to splash, as well as daily catwalk shows.
We Fell To Earth consists of ex-UNKLE collaborator Richard File alongside occassional Queens of the Stone Age vocalist Wendy Rae. That information alone should be enough to pique your interest. Throw in the fact that this appearance at the ICA is their first UK show and this becomes one of those miss-it-and-you'll-kick-yourself-forever type gigs.
There's not much more you can say about Ben and Jerry's Free Cone Day except "woohoo, free ice cream!" but for the sake of appearances we'll just say that it's happening next Tuesday from 1 until 5pm and... woohoo, free ice cream!
QYPER OF THE WEEK
THE BEST OF LONDON
On some days nothing will do but a good, old fashioned liquorice torpedo, or maybe some pear drops. On days like that we head to Mrs Kibble's Old Sweet Shoppe where the goodies are kept in jars and sold by the quarter.
London's coolest cookery school, Eat Drink Talk is perfect for the budding gourmet or just the "guy who doesn’t really cook anything other than spaghetti".
Forget IKEA. Fulham's Old Ginger provides "beautiful reclaimed-teakwood furniture" that you don't have to screw together yourself and will actually last.
Camden's Bento Cafe is "Nobu for regular people" thanks to its "fantastic Japanese food, imaginatively presented, at reasonable prices".
