Janakpur Handicraft Center (JHC) is a social business entrepreneur promoting Mithila arts. The business was originally established in a small town of Nepal named Janakpur over 16 years ago and has undergone various changes in business as well as social strategy. The refined model is to promote art and employment. The company has two principals, Janakpur Handicraft Center located in Pasadena, California and JHC located in Kathmandu, Nepal. All arts and craft works are done in Janakpur and Kathmandu of Nepal.
In JHC Mithila art is done by women living in village area of Janakpur. JHC promotes the region by empowering underpriviliged maithili women artists. JHC targets to enhance the scope of tourism in Mithila. Due to the popularity of the Art in Nepal and India many male artists took interest in it.

For cheap eats within skipping distance from Boudnath Stupa you could go far wrong than this friendly little spot where the owner is usually on hand with a grin and a laugh and you will sit on scruffy sofas next to Monks and students eating Momos, Thukpa and other Tibetan goodies. It's not fancy, and you can't see the stupa from here, but it's cosy and you can hang out with a Tongba (hot Tibetan beer) for a while if you fancy...

Right in the heart of tourist central Thamel this is one little spot where you can duck away from the chaos. They have bakery items out the front to eat in or take away and I think they are the best of the crop in Kathmandu. There are a few rivals and they all offer discounts in the evening - usually after 8pm - of up to 50% but I think this one has the most consistent output.
With sweet Pineapple Bags, tasty cinnamon rolls and generously filled apple strudels you can't really go far wrong.
They do reasonably priced food and drinks as well although I'm reliably informed the coffee isn't great and the fruit juice was just average. My Yak Cheese sandwich was nice but a bit dry.
Anyway, you want to go for the pastries for the most part.

If you want a place to stay just outside KTM and its inherent pollution and noise, this is a good bet. This is an Ashram so you can enjoy the company of the children and young adults who live here. The atmosphere is special, the food is mostly home grown, organic & good (2 main meals daily) and the price is right.
If you help at the Ashram you get a reduced rate but this is not obligatory.
Everyone here welcomes people from all over the world.
This is a great alternative to other 'typical' guest houses.
You won't be coming here with a car, and if you have one it needs 4x4. Take the bus from KTM to Thankot (15NPR!) and get off at Thankot Checkpost (just before Thankot on the main road. the Ashram is 10 minutes walk (uphill), ask anyone on the way if you are not sure.

Ok - so it's a hotel in Kathmandu, and I shouldn't expect too much... but it wasn't great. The beds were fine - and the shower worked... but the water was somewhat brown. The bedroom door felt like it would give way with a gentle shove - and the lock didn't offer much more. I guess you should expect much better anywhere in Kathmandu.
The breakfast offering was ok - with a few cereals, some fruit, and a small hot selection of Nepali and western offerings.
The bar was small - and offered beer at a price higher than we could get it for at 4000m! If you'd like a few - better to head into town. We didn't eat there in the evening... so I can't comment on the restaurant.
On the plus side - the rooms were spacious; and the hotel is located perhaps 10 minutes walk from the edge of Thamel - via the main access streets to the east - with the big-name outdoor stores.

Apologies for the vague pointer on the map, but there's no actual address on any of the info I have for them and my memory won't help me pinpoint the exact location! Any of the taxi or rickshaw drivers know it, though.
What a lovely place. Forget "guest house" and think "nice hotel". The rooms are well decorated and the foyer area reminiscent of any of the nicer places I've stayed in the UK. Many rooms over look a pretty courtyard and have a superb view.
Even at Nepali prices, it wasn't too expensive either. I'd more than happily stay there again if I get the chance to return to the city.

The Blue Diamond is not a five star hotel. But I was giving it 5 Stars for it is a good solution for the price they are charging. Some years back you could rent a room for about 10 US-$ and nower days the rooms are not much more expensive compared to to the rising prices everywhere else.
The people working in the reception are very friendly and helpful and if you do not need special treatment, everything is clean and more then good enough to get along with.
So if you are looking for an affordable room with shower and even TV and you don't want to get sick in a cheap guesthouse, the blue diamond is the place to go.
