Brunel's ss Great Britain - Bristol

Great Western Dockyard, Gas Ferry Road, Bristol BS1 6TY

29-01-2009

A fascinating look into history and the mind of I K Brunell. The facts and figures about the scale of this ship compared to those of its day are astounding. The effort in building and the historical documents are all very interesting, but it is when you go on board that it all came to life for me. There are a number of different audio tours to take you around the boat.
A good day out.

Staircase house - Stockport

Market place, stockport, Stockport, Greater Manchester SK1 1ES

29-01-2009

Like its advertising states. This museum lets you touch stuff. Practically everything in this old merchants house has been restored or recreated using traditional techniques. Consequently, although looking very old, many things are quite new or just props used for a particular purpose. My kids loved the freedom this allowed. They could sit on the loo in the water closet, spoon tea from the tea caddy, brush the kitchen floor and whatever else took their fancy. Lots to keep them entertained and to hold their attention.

Imperial War Museum North - Manchester

Trafford Wharf Road, Manchester, Greater Manchester M17 1TZ

29-01-2009

Although in a very imaginative building and surrounded by the Salford Quays whose regeneration is fabulous, this museum is just plain boring.
Most of the history on show is through read alone panels and very little comes through other media sources. This means that if you get bored easily by reading or you are distracted easily, then nothing you read goes in. You loose the plot and eventually nothing makes sense.
Not my cup of tea at all.

Underwater Street - Liverpool

Water Street, Cunard Building, Liverpool, Merseyside L3 1DS

29-01-2009

This is a quirky place. It feels like a playbarn because everything is on one level with kids running amock and a cafe in the centre of it. But look closely and the activities are not climbing, but science based. There are lots of play leaders on hand to help make craft items or undertake science experiments. The most popular seems to be the old mini parked part way through for which your children don a gown and go an paint it - literally. Absolutely great fun.

Europa Pools - Birkenhead

136 Conway Street, Birkenhead, Merseyside CH41 6RN

29-01-2009

A few years old now and beginning to show their age in the changing rooms.
However, the pool is fabulous. A walk in pool of a lagoon style with waves every so often and fountains all over the place. There are two flume slides which exit into their own safe area and a spa pool. For those wanting to be serious about their swimming there is a lane training pool adjacent.
Watch out for school holidays where entrance can be free of charge, but the place does get busy.

The Walker Art Gallery - Liverpool

William Brown Street, Liverpool, Merseyside L3 8EL

29-01-2009

A great exhibition space with a permanent and changing exhibition. Beautiful building. Fabulous childrens art centre and quizzes which they they follow around the gallery. Got to be one of the best galleries outside of London.

Wirral Museum - Birkenhead

Hamilton Square, Birkenhead, Merseyside CH41 5BR

29-01-2009

Not sure how to place this one.
The museum itself it pretty lame compared to the fabulous examples across in Liverpool, however, the location is brilliant.
The museum is housed in the old town hall and the grandeur of the surroundings was not lost on me. The ceilings are ornate and the central staircase is magnificent.

Its free to enter so if you are passing, pop your head in and take a look.

Quarry Bank Mill - Manchester

Styal, Manchester, Greater Manchester SK9 4LA

29-01-2009

As a National Trust member, I have visited this place many times over the years in the best and worst of weather. If its wet, the whole mill exhibition is indoors. You tour the mill from its founding days to see the old machinery still being put to use to make the cloth sold in the gift shop.
If the weather is good, there are lots of walks to follow through the country park.
At the end of the driveway, there is the apprentice house where the mill workers used to live. They were self sufficient from the garden which you can look around and guided tours give an insight into life during the industrial revolution.
Always some additional activities during school holidays and somewhere we keep going back to time and again.

Norton Priory Museum & Gardens - Manor Park

Tudor Road, Runcorn, Cheshire WA7 1SX

29-01-2009

This site of the old priory has a good mixture of historical artifacts displayed inside before you explore the ruins outside. The priory is set in its own woodland which is great to explore and walk around and just a short way down the road is a beautiful walled garden which is still maintained. Worth popping into if you are in the area.

Hack Green Secret Nuclear Bunker - Nantwich

French Lane End, Baddington Sound, Nantwich, Cheshire CW5 8AP

29-01-2009

This is a bizarre place. Can’t remember why we chose to go but my husband found the nuclear war history interesting. I found the way people lived and the examples of old equipment interesting. The children loved doing the mouse trail as we went around. Everyone was happy and a good time was had by all (unexpectedly)
