The Travellers Rest - Sowerby Bridge

Steep Lane, Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire HX6 1PE

31-10-2010

Another once busy destination eating pub now closed (See also Mill Bank in same area and same fate).

The Mill Bank - Halifax

Sowerby Bridge, Halifax, West Yorkshire HX6 3DY

31-10-2010

Currently boarded up - another sad sign of the times. It did have an excellent reputation for food but obviously not sustainable.

Colliers Arms - Elland

66 Park Road, Elland, West Yorkshire HX5 9HZ

15-11-2008 (updated on 17-05-2010)

I have just updated this review as the pub has re-opened under new management. My previous gripe still stands, ie the removal of the excellent canal side conservatory - madness. However the new team are doing on excellent job and have created an excellent friendly traditional pub atmosphere which has generated a good clientele. Other landlords should take note; good humour form the landlord and staff generates good humour from the punters. A pleasure to call here, especially on a sunny day by the canal with added bonus of Sam Smith's beer stilll at £1.40 a pint! Good value food too.

Standard Of Freedom - Skircoat Green

2 New Lane, Halifax, West Yorkshire HX3 0TE

In this age of cafe style bars and continental rubbish it is great to find a proper little boozer of the traditional kind - it should have a preservation order on it! No pretentions from the pub or the customers just good beer (excellent Taylor's Landlord + others) and good chat. Tucked away on a back street but only 500 yards from the Royal Hospital and 1/4 mile from Halifax town centre. Adjacent to Copley woods for dog walking etc. Stunning views from the bar across Copley valley to Norland. Tell your friends (but not too many, don't want to spoil it!)

Grey Horse - Huddersfield

Halifax Road, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire HD3 3QP

17-05-2010

This well appointed pub has one of the best locations in Huddersfield! On the busy Huddersfield Road linking Huddersfield and Halifax and 500yards from J24 on the M62 (no need to pay a fortune at Mway services, just pop in here). Three Real ales available (Taylor's Landlord, Draught Bass and rotating guest) and a good value home cooked menu. There is a childrens farm in the car park, chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets! Also Pool nights and Quiz nights. Should be much busier than it is.

William The 4th - Sowerby Bridge

80 Wharf Street, Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire HX6 2AF

WOW. What a transformation. This was a very old fashioned village boozer and has been totally dragged into the 21st century with a complete refit involving moving the bar and relocating the toilets upstairs. Currently drinks service only including good quality real ale but I gather the plan is to major on food. Definately worth a visit with plenty of other places nearby for food/drink. I will update this when catering begins

Stirk Bridge Inn - Sowerby Bridge

Stirk Bridge, Sowerby Bridge, West Yorkshire HX6 3BU

28-03-2010

Sadly another closure; permission is being sought for a domestic conversion although there is a local campaign to preserve it as a pub. This was one of the classic Ale Houses of the area but vanished up its own posterior orifice under the stewardship of (you guessed it - no not Enterprise - the other one) Punch Taverns.

Wheatley Wells Inn - Halifax

106 Wheatley Road, Halifax, West Yorkshire HX3 5LN

28-03-2010

Finally closed (late 2009) after a long rocky period. Usual for sale boards up but unlikely to re open. Shame as the pub has a nice interior. Street parking only but other than that has potential

Queen Public House - Greetland

Stainland Road, Halifax, West Yorkshire HX4 8BD

28-03-2010

Totally refurbished a couple of years ago to transform it from a street corner local into something more contemporary. Becoming very popular, especially at weekends. Lively friendly atmosphere - worth a visit. Usually real ale from Copper Dragon in good condition. Large screens for sport.

Branch Road Inn - Greetland

Saddleworth Road, Halifax, West Yorkshire HX4 8NU

Still going after many years of ups and downs. Easy to find location between Elland and Barkisland; country pub feel though just outside Halifax. Food served lunch and evening (closed 3-5.30) when good value meals are served in the bar or in the equally priced but more formal restaurant. 3 real ales on offer, Taylor'e Landlord in good condition on my last visit.
