The only advice: pace yourself! With meat skewers constantly being brought round and a salad bar and hot buffet, there is more than enough to eat, so take your time and dig in!

Various types and cuts of meat are brought around on skewers and sliced into your plate. There is everything from chicken hearts to chicken sausage (that was really good) to roast lamb to pork ribs to chicken wings to rump steak there will be lots to catch your fancy. Don’t be afraid of being fussy, although its all good and worth a try.

The restaurant itself is no frills but the staff are friendly and helpful

The hard thing is trying to find a gap to put some greenery on your plate – but it does defeat the object of eating copious amounts of meat a little! Definitely not for the faint-meat-hearted!

    Fish Club

Went for posh fish and chips at the Fish Club and it was pretty impressive. The calamari was exceptionally well-cooked, although a little on the saucy side. The good ol’ deep-fried hake was perfectly done with a brilliant batter.

They get their fish in fresh everyday and adjust the menu accordingly - so its always fresh and original.
Sides are ordered seperately, so it does tend to add up, but you can have anything from chips to salad to couscous and the choice makes it worthwhile!

The staff are friendly and laid back and not afraid to point you in the right direction - and helps make the atmosphere chilled.

    Carluccio's

Part of the chain of Italian restaurants that have popped over all over London now, the Covent Garden Carluccio’s was refitted about a year ago and is still a lovely place to grab a bite to eat.

Slightly on the pricey side, at least the menu is not off the shelf Italian and you can be assured of good quality food. The deserts and coffee especially are exceptional (but then, I have a sweet tooth!).

The crowd is funky and vibrant and not-too-touristy, whih makes a change for Covent Garden.

Definitely worth a visit if you want a quick meal - be sure to book during busy times as it gets full!

    The Dogs

I found this restaurant on a random walk around New Town looking for a restaurant. I could not even get in for days - but it looked delightful so I booked then and there and went back for dinner two days later.

The menu is limited and updated regularly, focussing on local and seasonal food. It’s all eccentric twists on traditional Scottish dishes.

The interior is funky and minimalistic with whitewashed walls and photogrpahy. The tables and chairs are a collection of different styles and sizes.

The staff are super friendly and I definitely suggest you ask them for an opinion - they are well-informed and have a good feel for which wines suit the food too.

This was a little gem in Ediburgh and deinite must-so when you feel like spoiling yourself and want something different…

    Belgo Centraal

I’ve walked past here loads of times and have never been able to figure out where you actually eat. Entering the restaurant you get sent downstairs into a cellar beer hall. Somehow they tread that fine line of making it feel traditional, with long beer hall tables and an open kitchen, and funky, using modern materials and designs. Which is the exact vibe I got when travelling in Belgium and I thought very well done! (total aside, but the bathrooms were very cool, with metal sheeting for doors and a unisex water fountain instead of basins…)

The beer menu is… BIG. I thought I like most beer but realised here that there are some beers I definitely like more than others! The beerologist also helped, giving guidance on what will be good to start the evening and expanding on why certain beers go well with certain foods, where they come from and the history and process behind making them. It was very interesting and gave me new insight into the world of beer!

The food was delicious. Not the cheapest menu I’ve seen, but not exorbitant. I had the pork belly and it was excellent – tasty and well prepared but not overly Germanic and heavy. The accompanying grand cru beer was an experience (that I would rather not repeat) but went perfectly with the food. The cheese croquettes to start sat well with the Oval trappist beer (these are made in working monasteries, although the monks are only allowed to sample the fruits of their labour once a week) and the strawberry blonde made my poached pear desert even sweeter (which I loved!).
I really thought the food was excellent and the environment made it a very jovial meal. Definitely worth a visit and even more so if you can get a few friends together.
