Lightwater Valley Attractions - Ripon

North Stainley, Ripon, North Yorkshire HG4 3HT

07-12-2011

We took our 5 year old daugher to lightwater valley earlier on this year and have to say despite the wet and the cold (typical british weather eh) we had a most lovely time!
I’m glad we waited for my daughter to be 5 rather then take her any younger as I don’t think that there is an awfull lot to do for the little kids – there are some teeny rides for tots but not many!
There was lots of rides that we could enjoy as a family, a firm favourite being the carosel! very traditional, but lots of fun and acutally it goes quite quickly!! we also really enjoyed the pirate area and totally loved the pirate ship which we went on about 5 times! and guess what, no queues!
It costs quite a lot to get in, but if you search the web before you go you can usualy find a discount voucher somewhere! I would suggest however than you take a picnic! the food is costly and to be honest, not very nice!

El Gaucho - York

Honestly, I have never sat in a restaurant and watched customers walk through the door and want to run up to them and beg them to change their minds and go elsewhere! until tonight!..

Now, I love a good steak, and having heard so many things about how Argentinian steak is 'the' best I have been looking forward to trying this place for ages!

There were so many problems with how the food came out I haven't got time to list them! I do think there was a problem with the language barrier with our waiter and ourselves, however one of our dining companions when asked how he would like his steak cooking, asked for rare, the waiter explained they only do medium rare, medium or medium well. I have never heard of this? totally bonkers, I like my steak rare, not medium anything, as did my pal. Given the choice, he chose medium rare. Nearly an hour later the food arrived and the steak was well done, we sent it back after an infuriating explanation to the waiter. By this time we had eaten a variety of poorly cooked incorrect meals (when I say incorrect, I mean not food that we had ordered eg, the wrong salad, and missing the cheese of the garlic bread). Our lovely vegetarian friend found her salmon dish intolerable. The newly cooked steak arrived apparently rare this time arrived on a sizzling hot platter and was once again well done, sending it back again wasn't really an option as we were already late for a later engagement, so the second attempt at steak was eaten with burnt chips and no replacement salad (the first salad was taken with the first steak).

So for nearly £90 for 4 people, drinks added to the bill that we didn't have (we got these removed) and 2 of our party went straight to a takeaway to 'top' up on food as despite the amount we spend, very little was consumed.

Utterly, utterly disappointed.

Bellrooster Well techinically she was a pescitarian = but yes, why not?

podding_about then let me suggest loch fyne, just up road from goucho’s, i do however agree if its on the menu they should know how to cook it!

Kowloon City - Mablethorpe

High Street, Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire LN12 1AD

I love chinese food, and I LOVED this place! we visited whilst on holiday at the nearby holiday park Haven.

The outside of the restaurant looks a bit shabby, and admitidly I was worried about the choice of venue for our meal. But, I was very pleasantly suprised. Up a flight of stairs from the entrance there’s a beautifully decorated chinese restaurant and very helpful friendly staff ready to seat us and take our drinks order.

The menu contains what you would expect of a chinese restaurant, and somethings you don’t usualy see and that’s what I wanted to try! slightly unsure of what the sauces were and if I would like them, the lovely waitress brought out a small sample of each sauce so that I could choose! I went for the mongolian duck and it was devine!

The rest of the family thoroughly enjoyed their meals, one confirmed that their meal was 'the best seafood dish they’d ever had’ which is praise indeed.

The prices were reasonable, and the food great. what more could you want!

Haven Golden Sands - Mablethorpe

Goldensands Holiday Park, Quebec Road, , Mablethorpe, Lincolnshire LN12 1QJ

20-05-2009

We went on a short break to Haven this year having taken advantage of one of there £95 per weekend offers, we ended upgrading our caravan which cost a minimal amount, but I’m so glad we did as on the weekend we went it was absolutely freeeezing! and luckily our caravan boasted the luxury of extra heaters.

The Caravan was pleasant and clean when we arrived, but on further inspection there was limited cooking facilities, eg, an oven with no shelves.

The park itself seemed clean, but in all honesty, there wasn’t a lot to do! There were amusements, which can entertain for a while I suppose but are not easy on the budget, a small play park and a fair which cost quite a lot per ride. (around about £2.00 per person to ride on the 'teacups’)

Food wise, on the site there was nothing open during the day apart from the bar - which was spacious but had a very off putting odour. We had lunch here one day but were hugely disappointed with the weak tasteless coffee, tuna melts which were nothing more than canned tuna in stale bread - certainly nothing melted! and standard greasy fried chips. urgh.

The saving grace for the place was the indoor soft play area for children, my daughter loved the slide and ball pool and this was the best part of our haven experience!

The Sidings Hotel and Restaurant - York

Station Lane, Shipton By Beningbrough, York, North Yorkshire YO30 1BT

20-05-2009

Despite moving to Shipton in 2007, it was a hole year before we sampled the delights of The Sidings, which is also known as 'El Treno’. It wasn’t until a menu and a takeaway menu came through the letter box that we realised that the food was in our budget. Previously through word of mouth we believed that the food was expensive. Not so.

First of all we tried the takeaway service, they don’t offer a delivery service but the you’re made very welcome by the friendly staff if you want to place your order then wait for it to be cooked, which never takes long.

The pizza’s are nothing short of delumptious, clearly homemade and totally moreish, finished off beautifully with one of their greek salads. yum, juicy olives and huge chunks of feta, a meal in itself!

Since the takeaway was such a big hit, and having been told by the lovely people at The sidings that children were more than welcome, we have been for 2 sit down meals.

and this is where it gets a bit special! for those that don’t know, The sidings is located on a main railway line, and sitting in the conservatory to eat offers fantastic views of passing trains. My daughter LOVES it.

It’s a lovely place to eat, very atmospheric, tasty food and friendly staff at affordable prices.

Vue - York

Stirling Road, York, North Yorkshire YO30 4XZ

21-01-2009

Lets face it most cinemas are pretty much like any other, particularly these huge multi screened places such as Vue at Clifton Moor.

But there are advantages to multi screen cinemas, firstly, when a new film comes out that’s highly in demand, they show it numerous screens - this means you’re more likely going to be able to book seats and not wait for days/weeks for the film you want to see to have available seats. And secondly, the list of films to see is nice and varied!

One of my favourite things about Vue is walking into the building, which is huge! and always smells of warm popcorn! you really feel like your having a 'treat’ coming here and if you visit the food counter then you can get another treat! (you like what I did there).

More recently I have discovered the Saturday morning kids club where you can bring your kiddies to the cinema to watch a film - all for less than 2 pounds! you don’t have to worry about the kids making a noise during the films, but frankly it’s expected. Saturday morning cinema trips have become a firm favourite in our house

W Boyes & Co - Eastfield

Havers Hill, Scarborough, North Yorkshire YO11 3DT

21-01-2009

Boyes in Scarborough is wonderfully diverse! you can literally get anything here.

The ground floor has a small food section, where you can pick up basics such as milk, tea etc and bizarrely, situated next to the 'grocery’ section, is the furniture department.

This furniture department isn’t like any you’ll find on these out of town shopping centres, at boyes that pack it and stack it high and theres often lots of remnants of packing materials over the floor. A lot of the furniture seems fairly dated, but who knows, maybe there’s a market for old fashioned future as a lot of people chose to retire to this old seaside town.

The next floor up, again, is a mish mash of what I can only describe as 'stuff’ from toys to nail varnish remover - it’s all here and generally, cheap cheap cheap!

Upstairs there is the clothes department, in all honesty just keep walking as the clothes although are cheap, look cheap and are fairly badly made.

The one Super duper (did I just say super duper? oh goodness I did, oh well, I’m going with it) the one super duper thing about Boyes is come December the Grotto arrives and the pull out all the stops!! It’s located on the ground floor and to get to Santa you go through a beautiful winter wonderland that enchants the kiddies before they even meet the man himself! I make a special trip each year to take my daughter here at christmas, as my mum did with me - lovely

Browns Of York - York

21 Davygate, York, North Yorkshire YO1 8QT

21-01-2009

Yorks best department store as far as I’m concerned!

I don’t know if it’s just me but wondering around the store, I can’t help but get the feel that this place is a little old fashioned and I think that that is part of it’s charm.

The staff on each department are extreemly attentive and are quick to ask if you need any assistance whilst browsing! something that I would usually find quite irritating, but not in Browns as the approach isn’t hard sell, it’s just good old fashioned customer service.

The make up counters are fantastic, and if you’re looking to re stock your make up bag, then have a word with one of the cosmetic assistance as they are fully trained and can advise you of which products are for you

Clarks - York

St. Nicholas Avenue, York, North Yorkshire YO19 4TA

21-01-2009

Clarks 'outlet’ store is situated in the McAuther glen designer centre. It is set out a little differently from regular Clark’s shoe shops, the main difference being that there isn’t just one left shoe on display and you have to ask for the right one, they’re all out on displayed in size order. Which actually I think, makes the whole business of buying shoes a lot easier.

The shoes for sale are usually the ones that didn’t sell in store from last season, if you need to be up to date with fashion, this store is not for you - however, I’m all about comfort so will happily where last seasons shoes! particularly at half the price.

They have a childrens section, but they don’t offer the fitting service, so I tend to avoid buying kids shoes from this store.

Marks & Spencer - York

St. Nicholas Avenue, York, North Yorkshire YO19 4TA

21-01-2009

I always find this Marks & Spencer store, which is effectively an outlet store situated at the designer outlet a bit hit and miss if I’m honest!

Generally the stock is well picked over, and a bit of a mess!

You can however, if you’re prepared to fight the crowds get some good bargains - the best being on children’s clothes. What I tend to do is buy for 6/12 months ahead as the clothes on sale are usually from the season before. For example, winter clothes can usually be bought in spring and visa versa.

for ladies clothes, there isn’t an awful lot - but you can get some good bargains if you need to stock up your underwear draw!
