Carling Academy Sheffield - Sheffield
37 - 43 Arundel Gate, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 1DL
19-02-2012
With it being located at the very centre of the city, it was disappointing to see this building empty for so many years, and since re-opening the old ‘Roxy’ nightclub in 2008 as the ‘O2 academy’ sheffield’s nightlife has been given a healthy boost. As well as a good venue to see some fairly big-name artists, the Academy is also a great place to be on fridays for the ‘Propaganda’ club night.
Motorpoint Arena - Sheffield
Broughton Lane, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S9 2DF
30-07-2011
(updated on 19-02-2012)
I go here for “Masters Football” every year and I occasionally go to “Sheffield Steelers” Ice Hockey matches. The Motorpoint arena is a fairly average standard venue of it’s type, and maintains decent toilet facilities, typical ‘big venue’ catering costs & food quality and decent seating with fairly good legroom. The “VIP” boxes are quite nice, and are perhaps one quality which it is ahead in compared other Arenas in the country.
However, the strict “You must buy all food/drink in the facility” rule is heavily enforced, which is a bit of a pain when you actually have to queue for ages for over-priced food. Fewer big-name acts have been performing here recently, and with the addition of the Leeds Arena, this isn’t likely to get any better.
Banham Zoo - Banham
Kenninghall Road, Norwich, Norfolk NR16 2HE
02-08-2011
I have been going to Banham Zoo during my Norfolk holidays annually for the past 7 years, and have seen noticeable improvement in terms of enclosures and visitor experience – however, this has also been accompanied with steady ticket price rises.
Though the zoo itself does not take up a large amount of room, there is a lot of animals to get round and see. It is home to almost 1000 animals of impressively different types, with seemingly more species added each year or so. The Birds Of Prey display on during the summer is greatly superior to that of its nearby sister park (Africa Alive) and of other zoos in the country – with an open-roof seating enclosure which has the birds flying impressively close above the heads of those in the audience. One negative of this zoo is the large-scale Wasp problem which has been there for almost every year i’ve gone to this place – you will encounter LOTS of these flying pests at the zoo in the summer.
Banham Zoo is overall a brilliant day out for people of all ages, and appeals to both young and more knowledgable members of the public. However, make sure you turn up with a big wallet, as the attendance fees and the gift shop are dearly priced!
KFC - Sheffield
872 Chesterfield Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S8 0SH
30-07-2011
This KFC has had a well-needed refurbishment recently, and now looks and feels a lot nicer place to eat. It is the only fast-food chain in woodseats, so i’d imagine it gets quite a decent amount of business – especially with the pubs located nearby.
I’ve got to say, I’m not a massive fan of KFC myself, mainly due to their inhumane animal treatment history. So i’m surprised i’ve given this place 3 stars
Don Valley Stadium - Sheffield
Worksop Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S9 3TL
30-07-2011
Been here for the odd Sheffield Eagles match a few years back and a Sheffield United away fixture against Rotherham. Though the main stand is of good quality facilities, the other 2/3 of the stadium which is uncovered, with no protection from Rain or wind. For seating events, you are a large distance from the actual pitch, and it would be advisable to take binoculars if you want to get close view of the action! One thing I do like about this place is the “Olympic Torch Holder” bank, which is a nice addition to the place leftover from the World Student Games.
Overall, it’s a fairly unique (in it’s own way) athletics venue, which hasn’t dated that badly from it’s construction in the 90’s.
Capital FM Arena Nottingham - Nottingham
Bolero Square, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG1 1LA
30-07-2011
I saw My Chemical Romance at the Capital FM Arena in February this year, and was in the ‘Standing’ section for the gig. I found my experience on the floor to be enjoyable, and the flooring laid down for the event was comfortable on the feet. The toilets were of decent quality, and getting into the venue was easy and hassle-free. The place looks quite nice from the outside, though it was a little hard to find for those not from Nottingham. I was (unusually for a ‘Arena’ in this country) allowed to take plastic bottles into the venue on that occasion, which was good to see.
With my City Of Sheffield seeming to have less-and-less decent acts performing at it’s “Motorpoint Arena”, this venue isn’t too far from home for me and I will be seeing the Arctic Monkeys there in October.
McDonald's Restaurant - Sheffield
20-22 High Street, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 2GE
29-07-2011
This ‘restaurant’ has had one of the refurbs which they have been rolling out over all McDonalds in the UK, and it is much quicker and easier to go here now thanks to the new ‘Fast Lane’ system. It is very busy due to it’s location but it handles this situation quite well, as there always seems to be seating available on either floor.
For a McDonalds, it is quite High-Standard.
Odeon Cinema - Sheffield
45-47 Arundel Gate, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S1 1DL
29-07-2011
An outdated 70’s building which lacks the comfort and modern screening facilities of Vue and Cineworld in Sheffield. Has pretty poor and far-between viewing times. I Have had numerous problems with the staff refusing to accept valid forms of ID when attempting to see "15"’s or more recently "18"’s. Rarely cleaned in most areas – floors often littered with popcorn and toilets not up to scratch.
The only major advantage is that it’s the only major cinema in the City Centre, but I can’t think it’ll be open much longer if it doesn’t improve. I’d recommend you Save up a little bit of money for a tram and go to Vue or Cineworld instead!
Tesco Stores - Sheffield
Abbeydale Drive, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S7 2QB
29-07-2011
I go here every Saturday for the weekly shop, which as you may have guessed already isn’t the most thrilling experience. I find that this Supermarket is pretty average in most areas, and is pretty much a template for Tesco stores throughout the country. It is a fairly large facility, and following a major refurbishment in Late 2010 it now contains an Opticians, Pharmacy and a Phone Shop. The addition of these services is quite welcome, and is a great convenience. The Car Park is quite large and free, though people caught using it for other means for over 3 hours will apparently be issued with a parking ticket.
One thing I miss about the old site though is the ‘Tesco Tower’ pole structure, which could be seen from quite far away, but was dismantled in favour of an extension.
Sheffield United - Sheffield
Bramall Lane, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S2 4SU
29-07-2011
This review may be a bit biased, as I am a Sheffield United supporter myself.
As a season card holder in the ‘Kop’ stand for the past 6 years, I have seen the facilities at Bramall Lane be massively updated to a standard most certainly fit for the Premier League. Despite the team playing there being pretty bad recently, the atmosphere has remained quite good, though with a big decrease in crowd attendances the noise levels aren’t what they were when I first got my Season ticket. The addition of a big screen which displays the live match, Sky Sports news, advertisements and related media is very welcome. Stewarding at the ground is a mixed bag – they seem to be much more comfortable with being stricter with the home fans than the away! The Fire Certificate rule imposed by the council on all Sheffield sports venues is ridiculous, but is obviously out of the clubs control.
When you hear 33 thousand people singing along to the "Greasy Chip Butty’ (a rendition of ‘You fill up my senses’ by john denver) you’ll understand why they call it “Beautiful Downtown Bramall Lane”!
