Piazza della Signoria - Florence
Via Dei Tavolini 8, 50122 Firenze
25-02-2010

ibis Berlin Mitte - Prenzlauer Berg
Prenzlauer Allee 4, 10405 Berlin

Numero Undici - Pisa
Via S. Martino 47, 57100 Pisa
27-11-2008
This place is simply amazing.
It’s a restaurant with a twist - it’s 100% self service.
But this isn’t some shabby cafeteria type deal, Numero Undici (Number Eleven in English) is oozing with style.
There are wooden beams on the high ceiling, the walls are rough exposed stone and there are chinese style lanterns hanging over dark wood tables.
Here’s how it works - You walk in and order from the hand written chalk board menu. Then you get everything else yourself - cutlery, napkins, glasses - and set your own table.
When your food is ready, they call you and you go pick it up.
When you’re done, you clean off the table yourself.
The great thing about the lack of waiters is that they obviously save a lot of money. Which means LOW prices. How low? How about €4 for a carafe of wine? Or €10 for a huge plate of grilled lamb?
It’s all excellent quality as well. Everything is delicious.
Other dishes on the menu include swordfish, gulasch, grilled pork, beef and pasta.
But the main attraction here is the meat. If you’re longing for a big plate of succulent grilled meat in Pisa, this is your place.
It also very popular with locals - always a good sign.
As they don’t take reservations, I would advise coming here fairly early as it can get very busy, very quickly.
And since it’s off the beaten tourist trail, I would definitely class this as one of Pisa’s hidden gems.
Highly recommended.
Spaghetteria Alle Bandierine - Pisa
Via Mercanti 4, 56127 Pisa

(updated on 22-11-2008)
Spaghetteria Alle Bandierine specializes in, you guessed it, spaghetti!
Their dishes are a bit hit and miss, as is the service.
Come here on a good night and it’s fantastic. Show up on a bad night and, well, it’s pretty dire.
Don’t be surprised if your waiter brings the wrong bottle of wine or forgets your starter. Both have happened to me.
Prices are reasonable. A spaghetti dish is around €7 and a liter of house wine is €11.
They have a small outside seating area when the weather is warm.
Normally the spaghetti dishes are great, but I can’t make any promises.
Just come and hope for the best!
Ellopia - Prenzlauer Berg
Erich-Weinert-Straße 55, Prenzlauer Berg, 10439 Berlin

This is a sub standard Greek restaurant.
Which is a shame because the owner is super friendly.
The first 2 times I was here, it wasn’t that bad. My vegetables were cold, but they weren’t inedible. I just thought maybe they’re trying something new and they’re supposed to be like that. I mean, who serves cold vegetables unintentionally?
The 3rd time, half of my vegetables were cold and half were lukewarm. This means, you guessed it, microwave! It also means they didn’t microwave the veggies properly the previous 2 times. Lame.
When I brought this to our servers attention, she said that the chef wasn’t feeling very well.
Uh, excuse me?
We left pretty quickly after that and I’ve never been back since.
XION - Prenzlauer Berg
Pappelallee 56, Gegenüber vom Restaurant FleischLust, 10437 Berlin
19-11-2008
I’ve only been here one time, for sunday brunch.
It wasn’t good.
The service was slow and the brunch buffet was uninspiring.
A lot of the food was either finished (they didn’t refill the buffet very often) or lukewarm.
On top of that it was incredibly crowded. People didn’t think twice about elbowing you out of the way.
There are much better places in the area for brunch - skip Xion and go somewhere else instead.
Freiraum - Prenzlauer Berg
Buchholzer Strasse 5, 10437 Berlin
19-11-2008
Good sized restaurant in the heart of Prenzlauer Berg.
They have typical German dishes like schnitzel and bratkartoffeln, plus American dishes like burgers and sandwiches.
Their burgers aren’t bad, but they suffer from the infamous German bun problem - a good hamburger bun is impossible to find.
Otherwise, it’s a great place. They have a huge breakfast selection, served all day (and night) and FREE wifi.
Good selection of German beers on tap.
They are also a pension and rent out rooms upstairs.
I’ve never stayed here personally (because I used to live next door), but you can’t beat the location. It’s only a few steps to Schönhauser Allee.
If you’re in the neighbourhood, definitely check it out.
Das Schloss - Steglitz
Schloßstr. 34, Rathaus Steglitz, 12163 Berlin
19-11-2008
This is a decent shopping mall in Steglitz. All of the usual stores are here: H&M, Esprit, Media Markt etc.
They also have one of Berlin’s few Apple stores, Mac House.
The way it’s laid out, it seems quite small and intimate. But it’s not - there are loads of shops here.
It can get very busy on weekends.
Very convenient for public transportation, there’s an U-Bahn station right outside.
It’s not bad if you’re in the area, but it’s not worth taking a special trip here.
