    Staunton Harold Nurseries

1pxt BizzyBek last updated on 24-11-2008:

Staunton Harold Nurseries is a lovely garden centre located on the Staunton Harold estate (which does mean a drive down some old country lanes). The estate houses a stable block which has been converted into a craft centre, there are walks around the estate & lake, a church (overlooked by the National Trust) and a specialt aquatics centres. So with all this at hand it is a popular day out and many people visit the garden centre just for a nose.

As a garden centre it is well laid out with a good range of plants but they are expensive compared to other centres in the region. Their range or outdoor ornaments is poor in my opinion. As the prices are more on the expensive side this is a place for you to buy 'treat’ or specialist plants as opposed to the lock, stock & barrel of your gardening needs.

Within the garden centre is the Peach Tea Room set in the old oconservatory which is a lovely setting for a cupp but the food is disappointing (you’d be better spending more and walking over to the Stable Tea Rooms). The tea room doesn’t take cards by the way.

The inside part of the garden centre has a gift and fancy homewares section. They always have a good choice of conservatory and outdoor furniture.

From October they dedicate a large part of the indoors to their Christmas stock which is worth a visit in itself. They always present their Christmas stock beautifully and have a number of special evenings and events in the run up to Christmas such as reindeer and Santa arriving.

They have a Santa ride & grotto which is ridiculously expensive in my opinion (2007 price was £7 per child!)

A nice garden centre to saunter around, often has nice gift bits to buy and their actual Christmas decorations are well priced but otherwise it leans towards expensive and it can be easy to get carried away!

  • Manor Pharmacy - Castle Donington

    Manor Pharmacy

1pxt BizzyBek last updated on 24-11-2008:

Very conveniently, this pharmacy is right next door to the Castle Donington doctor’s surgery. As such you can hand in your repeat prescriptions to the doctor’s and arrange to have the completed order ready to pick up fromthe chemist.

As a pharmacy it is very efficient and the staff are polite and helpful. They have a very handy delivery service which is free thouh you do need the cash on hand to pay the delivery person if you pay for your prescriptions. Still if you are ill this is a great help.

In terms of over the counter medicines they are well stocked and gain the staff are very happy to help and advise. There are other items available such as toiletries, medical acessories and baby accessories. They no longer carry cosmetics. There is a small selection fo perfumes and any gift sections ebb and flow. The shelves are often bare in places which make the place look as if its closing down when it isn’t!

There is a photo print machine on site.

It is also a helpful place for pet owners with their vet medic service - you can buy and order in a wide selection of animal medicines and specialist foods often cheaper than at vet surgeries.

  • McDonald's Restaurants - Derby

    McDonald's Restaurants

1pxt BizzyBek last updated on 24-11-2008:

This McDonald’s is located off Osmaston Road off a very busy roundabout. This means access is really easy if you are coming from the west and leaving by the east, otherwise the roundabout can be a real nightmare.

Until recently it had the oddest interior, liek an Old New Orleans wood style speakeasy - it was oddly quaint. It has now been refurbished and is brash, modern and moudled plastic a go-go. Still the clean lines make it easy to maintain and it is always clean. The staff are quick and efficient.

There is an outdoor seating area, though slap next to the busy roundabout its not the world’s greatest setting.

There is ample car parking around the back and a drive through service.

  • TK Maxx - Beeston

Chilwell Retail Park, Nottingham, Derbyshire NG9 6DS

    TK Maxx

1pxt BizzyBek last updated on 24-11-2008:

TK Maxx is like a very posh jumble sales. This branch is very large and you do need to go in with a treasure hunt frame of mind. Yes their are great bargains to be had…if you have the stamina to search them out.

Sadly because the presentation is so poor and items are piled up and stuffed in, it doesn’t encourage the shoppers to have much care either and people grab things. Many items, notably the more fraile things in homeware, get damaged. If the damage isn’t too bad or cosmetic at least use it as a bartering point.

It is also a noisy store with loud music piped in. If you persevere and are lucky you may come out with some good buys but don’t even attempt it half heartedly or with a headache!

  • east midlands airport - Castle Donington

    east midlands airport

1pxt BizzyBek last updated on 24-11-2008:

East Midlands Airport is a medium sized airport. Sadly since the days of increased security the layout has greatly changed with shops all located on the passenger side (in the pass the shops were in a main foyer open to all visitors). The cafe overlooking the runway is also closed to visitors so if picking people up or waving them off its all a bit more business like - get in and get out!

There is ample car parking, for short and long stay.

The departure hall is very spacious but can get very busy in the summer months and expect long queues at check in.

Once into the departure lounge it is quite small. There’s a small selection of shops and duty free and a good restaurant/cafe. The gates are within wlkign distance - not being an unduly large airport everything is compact and handy. If you do have mobility problems the staff are ver helpful with your needs.

On arriving back the baggage hall is spacious. Once out of baggage hall the arrivals hall is quite small, with telephone kisoks & a coffee bar. When there’s a glut of flight or lots of waiting people it can get very crowded. This means it is often quite difficult to get a taxi outside. Also the airport taxi firm is expensive. It is wise to contact another of the local firms beforehand and book. The airport is well served by buses linking with Nottingham, Loughborough and Derby.

In front of the Arrivals hall is a well stocked Spar shop, there is also a BP garage with shop located on site. The Thistle have a hotel on site which can be expensive but there is a good choice of hotels, guest houses and bed & breakfasts in the vicinity.
