The Medicine Chest - Brighton

Brighton BN1 2PB

14-04-2011

Love dark candlelit intiimate spaces? The Medicine Chest was designed for you. Really is my fave bar in Brighton, definitely NOT one for stags & hens... thankfully! It's way too small for a large party, but it's perfectly formed! There's also a restaurant on the ground floor - not tried it yet, but might be worth a go!

Recipease - Brighton

72-73 Western Road, Brighton BN1 2HA

12-04-2011

Thx to Qype my intro to Recipease was fantastic! What a great concept (though I admit I'm not exactly a JO fan).

Matt the Chef was brilliant, funny but informative (not to mention patient!). The pasta making lesson was great fun.... and surprisingly, my pathetic efforts at making butternut squash & ricotta ravioli/tortellini were amazingly delicious. Would definitely recommend it - for singles or groups. Met some lovely people there, hopefully might bump into them again sometime in the future. Considering the fish filleting lesson! This could become addictive :).

Btw the menu board looked very tempting.... I'll be back!!!

fionaparry Tried the pasta out again this evening using my fab new pasta machine!! think it needs some practice... either that or I'd forgotten all that we had learnt last night!!
got there in the end and had a great dinner with my family..

Cazz Hi Fiona... thx for being patient with my amateurish attempt at ravioli making! Mind you I had the Waitrose version this eve... and... it was nowhere near as tasty as ours! So you bought a pasta machine? Wow... you'll be the Recipease resident chef soon - move over Matt :) Have fun... best wishes Cazz.

The Grand Hotel - Eastbourne

King Edward Parade, Eastbourne, East Sussex BN21 4EQ

07-02-2011

Haven't been to the Garden Restaurant in the Grand Hotel, Eastbourne for many a year until last Sunday. Fabulous old-fashioned courteous service and surroundings, it's hardly changed but that's in it's favour. It's a gracious nod to the past, the food (Sunday lunch) is wonderful, but you'd better dress up a bit for the occasion it's not your jeans, trainers & hoodie zone (thankfully). If only they'd ban kids from the resaurant it would be nirvana. By the way, drinks are on the pricey side... make sure you have enough credit on your card!

There's another restautrant in the hotel too - The Mirabelle, which is probably even more upmarket... but it's not open for Sunday lunch.... last time we went there it was also superb.... again it was quite a few years ago.

Sea Shell of Lisson Grove - Marylebone

49 Lisson Grove, Marylebone, London NW1 6UH

07-02-2011

The Sea Shell was somewhere I've been meaning to try for years and years but have never been in the Marylebone area. However, last Saturday on the way back from Alfies Antique Market I finally found out for myself just how excellent their fish (cod) & chips are. It's virtualy impossible to find a spot of greasiness or oiliness in either the battered fish or the chips. Massive portion of fish in it's own eco-card tray, ditto the perfectly cooked chips. Definitely the healthiest take away (I actually ate at their spotlessly clean marble topped counter) ever! Can't wait till go back but it'll have to wait until I've shed half a stone or so :)

Proud Brighton Ballroom - Brighton

83 St Georges Rd, Kemptown, Brighton BN2 1EF

16-01-2011

Have been to Brighton Ballroom several times and literally had a ball (sorry) every time.

On my birthday last year we had a blast - we were treated to a really fab floorshow with a brill Rat Pack singer, and awesome diva stylee singer whose name escapes me but would've bought her CD on the spot if she'd had one. A few burlesque strippers put their cherries on the cake. Great eve was had by all.

Being one for dressing up (along with my female impersonator friend), this place hits it running, it's probably the only venue in Brighton I'm happy to wear my wigs, my vintage togs and accessories and feel part of the furniture.

Please, please can't we have more glam venues like the BB in boring, grotty Brighton? Not everyone wants to slob around in grungy bars that haven't been cleaned in years.... with loos to match! Or slum it in SoNo (SOuth of NOrth St)!!!

Way to go BB, I love you.... looking forward to the next Margot's Party and possibly the Tusk & Garter Club too.

Cineworld - Brighton

Brighton Marina, Brighton BN2 5UF

14-01-2011

How the hell did this toilet that laughingly calls it self a 'cinema' get 3 stars? It has no redeeming qualities apart from free parking, that must be the only reason it gets any trade!

Wish I could award it a minus score but sadly, it seems 1 star is mandatory.... why?

The Birdcage Walk - Brighton

300 Ditchling Road, Brighton BN1 6JG

14-01-2011

Birdcage Walk is my only local eaterie within walking distance, and it's rather goodll! At lunch time the menu isn't immense but had a splendid steak & homecooked chips there over the Xmas 2010 period, my companions opted for the home-made burgers and all 3 of them munched them approvingly... praising the prime quality mince used.

I will keep popping in occasionally.... they certainly deserve local support :)

Shine - Brighton

111 Gloucester Road, Brighton BN1 4AF

14-01-2011

Having been to Shine twice in November 2010, the 2nd time being a freebie to try to salvage the previous disastrous result! Can't recall my hairdresser's name but he was one of the older guys that work there. He didn't listen to my original request, I went there with my hair in a terrible condition... I wanted an interesting colour technique, instead my hair came out looking brassy and with a discernible dark bar where he'd not quite matched the root highlights to the rest of my hair.

The initial cost of £140 completely stunned me, normally I wouldn't complain but at that price I expect excellence. To give the salon their due, they offered to redo my hair FoC, but unfortunately it was with the same guy, again, he didn't really listen to me and seemed to bluff his way out of the bodge-up. I left the salon still unhappy, but couldn't be bothered to take it any further. My story is too long to detail here.

It's now Jan 2011 and so reluctant to go to get my roots done because in my experience of Brighton hairdressers I just can't find a fabulous colourist, it doesn't matter how little or how much I pay.

PS I had to give 1 star for this review, I suppose the one star would go the the Aveda hair products they use in Shine, they certainly resstored the condition. But the salon itself is awful, no towels to wrap around your head after washing, only something that looks and feels like a dishrag. Their LED/fluorescent lighting is useless especially to judge hair colour under. I'm all for 'green' businesses... but hair salons need bright, clean and flattering lighting.

PS If my profile pic is the one with pink hair..... it's a wig!!! Wish my hair looked that good lol!!!

Cazz Nice attitude you have there Hopewell!!!

Yes, the prices are on your website, but I was definitely NOT quoted for the work I had done. A different person (a friendly Aussie girl) assessed my hair when I went in for a skin test, at no time was I told it would cost around £140 - if I had, I wouldn't have agreed to continue with the appointment! I was expecting it to be around £100 mark. The guy who actually did my hair was nice enough, but he took hardly any notice of what I asked for and definitely not what I'd discussed with the girl previously.

As for not reviewing before, I'd forgotten all about Qype and was prompted to return when emailed by Qype the other day I noticed someone else's gripe with another salon. I find it useful to read other people's experience. Your 'take it - or leave it' speaks volumes about the salon you are defending. I presume (clearly wrongly) that a salon experience is meant to be one of the few luxuries we can look forward to occasionally. I applaud your ethical approach. However, I don't like dishrags on my head, they do not absorb water and do not feel comfortable. I didn't like seeing dye stains on the floor by my chair, I didn't like your dull lighting
which was similar to office lighting (I prefer bright halogen) FYI I did not see the 'true' colour of my hair in the salon (it was after dark both times) I had to wait until dawn the next day for to see the true result. I asked for a range of colours, instead my colour looked rather muddy after the last visit. Apart from the awful colour and absymal 'blowdry', the haircut & hair products used were excellent.

Sorry, but there was no way I would have complained twice... I'd rather blame myself for my regrettable choice of salon.

Perhaps I should take a photo of my hair from each of the salons I've used over the years as proof, apart from a few - in general they've been disappointing. It's easy for you hairdressers to dismiss the clients, but remember we are the ones who pay for your mistakes. Oh to be psychic huh!

I'm rather pleased I don't conform to one of your stereotypical clients.... and would never contemplate going back to your salon anyway!

Cazz You're too damn right... there are too many inept hairdressers at large. If you don't believe me - take a look at other salons reviews.

There is no slander in my comments only facts:

FACT #1
I didn't like the outcome of MY hair colour from ONE hairdresser in Shine, for all I know the other stylists/colourists are amazing.

#FACT 2
I said the cut was excellent but my hair colour was dull (FACT backed up by comments from my colleagues) and the finish was lousy on the first visit (2nd time had a rough dry on request).

Believe me - too many hairdressers cannot finish hair properly.

#FACT 3
FYI before I booked into Shine I intended to go back to particular hairdresser in Jimmy Chop Chop but she wasn't available. Even looking at their reviews some are good, some bad.

But that's the my point you can't judge a salon by one hairdresser, who may not be good with my type of hair - he may be brilliant with thick lustrous locks. However, you can say whether you appreciate their facilities or not. I'm afraid Shine's aethetics left me cold, otherswill probably love it, horses for courses as they say.

TABLE restaurant @ MyHotel - Brighton

17 Jubilee Square, Opposite the Central Library, Brighton BN1 1GE

16-01-2010

Why isn't TABLE more popular? I've been there 4 times now (one being our office (Xmas 09) party when they coped admirably with 70 people - and not one complaint - only compliments!

Relying on quality ingredients, fresh... and as local as possible. Even their chips are handcut! The restaurant's highly professional and friendly team serve fabulous food and provide excellent service.

I rarely eat meat (don't worry - meat eaters are adequately catered for), so starter-wise I nearly always choose calimari, it's lightly battered...and never chewy... though on the salty side (for those of you who worry about your health). The mains - Fish, whether grilled whole or deep fried is always a winner, Gnocchi with Wild Mushrooms is fab... and far more filling than it looks.

Leaving the best to last.. is the AWESOME Chocolate Nemesis desert... very, very dark, very moist, extremely rich but beautifully light in texture. My tip: Unless you're a mega-chocoholic - share it! It's D-I-V-I-N-E :)

Menus change monthly, though some dishes seem to remain as standard. TABLE's cuisine/service is definitely superior to it's former incarnation - Aldo Zilli's, which I found to be a disappointment.

Yes, I've become very fond of this eaterie, and I'm probably shooting myself in the foot, because I'd love to keep it secret! However, I also want them to stay in business... so don't take my word for it - please go check them out!

Thai Gastrobar - Brighton

165-169 Princes House, Princes Place, North Street, Brighton BN1 1EA

23-06-2008

Just paid a visit to Sabai Gastrobar, I ordered Ped Thai Ley (I think!), seafood with noodles -a lovely ‘homecooked’ dish, constisting of squid, prawns, green lipped mussels, a small crab claw and fresh veggies. My companion tried special honey roasted ribs, which were overcooked… but the pork special fried rice was described as flavourful. The service was really friendly though, I would go back. Don’t expect gourmet and you will be perfectly happy :)
