A quaint, old fashioned shopping arcade that runs off Piccadilly, one of several similar arcades in this area. Walking into the arcade is almost like stepping onto the set of a Dickensian film, you half expect a lady to swish past in a crinoline or a man in a tail coat and top hat to come scurrying out of a door. The shops are quite small and all have the same traditional windows which gives the arcade it’s charm. The shops sell mostly expensive, luxury items, it’s usually the jewellery that catches my eye, but really I just like walking through and enjoying the vintage setting.

These gardens are situated in the middle of Leicester Square and separated from the square by railings. The gardens are planted with lawn, flowers and trees around a fountain, and the two paths that criss-cross the gardens are lined with park benches. It’s a good place to sit but it can be hard to find a seat. The tall plane trees provide good shade on hot days but you need to take care you don’t sit under a pigeon perch! There’s a statue of Charlie Chaplin which seems apt since Leicester Square is such a cinema hub.

This is a pedestrianised square full of shops, bars and eating places. It’s a magnet for tourists.
If you’ve ever wanted to see what a caricature of yourself looks like then you will find someone who will do that for you in the square. There’s usually a line of artists along the railings outside the Empire, so long as you don’t mind a small crowd watching.
In Winter a set of funfair rides are positioned around the square and seem to fit in well with the hurly burly of the area.
There are four multi-screen cinemas facing onto the square and plaques featuring the handprints of various film luminaries are dotted around the pavement. A few times I’ve passed through when a film premiere is about to kick off and there’s been a great buzz about the place.

Bromley is a good place to go shopping, not quite as good as when it had two department stores as well, but still good. The Glades shopping Centre runs alongside the High Street and complements it rather than leading shoppers away from it. Over two floors you’ll find most of the well known chains including a Debenhams and a very large Marks & Spencer. My favourite store is the pet shop near the entrance to the toilets. There aren’t any pet shops near where I live so it’s nice to go in there and coo over the guinea pigs and lovebirds.

Although I’ve been through this park many times it’s hard to think of anything that’s striking or memorable about it. It’s more like a suburban park, by that I mean a big patch of grass, plonked down in the heart of London. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, it’s always nice to get off the street and sit somewhere surrounded by grass and trees. In warm weather a lot of people find a bench to eat the lunch they just purchased in Piccadilly, I’ve done that too. Because it connects to St James Park and Hyde Park you could, if you had the inclination, walk from Notting Hill Gate to Whitehall by park with just the odd road crossing along the way.
