Snack-Point 1 "Old School Bude" - Westend

What can one say? Best Worscht is a Frankfurt institution. One of the few places you’lll find in Germany where spicey really means spicey. For the unannointed, its Currywurst and pommes but with a variety of flavors and heat levels. The heat levels are no joke. I’lll go as high as “C” and I do appreciate some heat. You get above that level and you need to be a real connoiseur of hot blast spice levels.
My standard: 7B+ with pommes. The rye bread is also the bomb.
Les Moulins Bleus - Metz
3 Rue Fabert, 57000 Metz

Nähe Dom, ordentliche Familienrestaurant
Sehr Zentral. Kinder haben Pizza Margerita, ein Cola, und eine Nachtisch für €7.00. Für diese Zweck geeignet. Normale Hauptspeisen c.a. €15-20.

Centrally located, Family restaurant, not expensive.
Very close to Cathedral. Good place to take kids for a reasonably priced meal in center of town. Kids had Pizza Margerita, a coke, and a dessert for €7.00. Otherwise food and atmosphere unexceptional.
Weingut Markus Schneider - Ellerstadt

Solid mid-range winery in the Pfalz near Mannheim.
First had a taste of his Weißburgunder in Frankfurt’s Holbeins. He also delivers to a number of better quality hotels so it was worth driving down. Weißburgunder is a nice everyday wine at €8.40. Also bought some Sauvignon Blanc at €10.00 well worth the price. Did not get into the reds but others have comented in the Deutsch reviews. They have a comfortable tasting area, large enough for a crowd, open 10:00-16:00 Mon-Sat.
Worth a side trip.

Good value lunch place, several blocks from downtown.
Classic Butcher with a very popular lunch menu. We’re talking about meat+potato+veg. Value for money is very high although frankly, since starting a diet, I’ve less reason to go. In any case, I’ve been a fan for over 15 years which hopefully tells you something. The lines are often long which should also tell you something.
Good value for money plus consistency over decades earns a rare four stars from me.
Heiliggeist - Altstadt
Mailandsgasse 11, 55116 Mainz

Mid-range restaurant; fabulous setting, OKish food
Heiliggeist is a 500 year old Hospice, basically it looks almost like the inside of a small cathedral with huge vaulted ceilings and sandstone arches. Very, very unique. It’s very large so, with reservations, would be good for a large group. Less so for a cosy date. It does tend to be rather loud.
Mains go for €11 – €20 and frankly I think the food is not quite as good as it sounds on the menu. Date had “Ricotta pumpkin lasagne with marinated chestnuts”. Ricotta was lost in there, pumpkin was underdone, and the whole thing was smothered in a sort of mournay sauce. I had a rather chewy ribeye which came with some sort of salty creamed sauce which I couldn’t identify.
I just think the food is uninspiring, possibly because the kitchen has to deal with up to 500 people which is a tall order. Someplace that I’d take people who haven’t been yet, just to see it. But not a place to find strong value for dollar food.
>Still way better than Citrus.

Haute Cuisine welll executed. Somewhat pricy but worth it.
High end restaurant with an attached Terrace which likely has a simpler menu. Lunch Prix Fixe four course for €45 and six course for €65. Food was outstanding. Inventive, varied, local ingredients. Was very happy with the experience. Wine list is varied and markup was very humane. Granted it’s in the middle of nowhere… but that’s Belgium for you. Lovely area for hiking.
Two people dined for €185 including wine and felt it was well worth the price.
Heartily recommended.
Cafe Maldaner - Wiesbaden
Marktstr. 34, 65183 Wiesbaden

Viennese style cafe, boring coffee, subpar food, cakes looked OK.
Went for breakfast. This cafe looks indeed like an old school Vienna coffee house. Unfortunately all the coffee comes out of an automatic coffee machine (at least it’s from WMF!), but coffee def a huge let down. Breakfast unimpressive. Brötchen looked like they came from a factory. Cold cuts and cheese also looked like supermarket wares. Scrambled eggs with speck and chives were salty as heck.
I will say the cakes in the display case looked delicious. But we didn’t eat any cakes and I don’t bother returning to cafes that serve bad coffee from a robot.
No need to go back unless your Grandma insists.
On edit: I just read the German reviews. Rather shocking that people give this place five stars. Again, this is a place with antique coffee bins on display for show. The actual coffee comes out of a gas station style coffee automat. Simply inexcusable but I guess there’s a certain crowd that can always be impressed by the decor.
Paris' Bar - Sachsenhausen
Oppenheimer Landstr. 27, 60596 Frankfurt am Main

Just realized I’ve overlooked writing on Paris’ Bar. Small wine bar just off the Schweizerplatz. Paris, the owner, is a curmudgeonly sort who really knows wine and food. This is not a place to get a full on dinner. Menu is limited to small plates. That being said, Paris always has top notch Hors d’oeuvre with a wide selection of exotic hams, salamis, cheeses, etc. All are top notch. The wine list likewise was assembled by a wine lover.
It’s a shame his larger place on the other side of the river didn’t make it. Paris really knows his stuff. Perfect place for a first date.
→Highly recommended.
Franco's Austernbar - Altstadt

Sorry. Nie wieder.
