the dublin castle - Camden

I believe this is a sort of proper place for gig-goers, the back room is dedicated to loud music performances so drinkers won’t be disturbed sitting at the front area. It looks quite old and not very clean but still bearable.

Services are alright, I think. When it’s not busy, staff might occupy themselves with newspapers - no harm done, you just need to alarm them to get attention.

Reading its previous reviews, I’m slightly confused if it is exactly the same place I have in mind.

The only reason I went there because we (I & another 9 colleagues) were entitled for a free entry after being in The Covent Garden Comedy Club.

I was expecting expensive drinks due to its location right in the middle of London, and The Motion Bar didn’t let me down at all. It was a Saturday night so big crowds were not a surprise either. I knew where I was so I won’t complain about a night out in town.

What got me was the music - how can you let someone who can’t understand the tunes play the music. It was like a zigzag uneven runway if you want me to make it tangible. There were no clues of how the song came after the current one, the tunes were not smoothly connected at any sense. We didn’t survive the night, had to leave it as it was.

I am somehow envious people who had a great time there but don’t think I have enough courage to go back there again.

The Covent Garden Comedy Club @ Heaven - Embankment

We had a great night out there, it seemed like the most worthwhile tenner I have ever spent in my London life. It is located on Villier Street, Charing Cross which is quite handy to grab a bite before the show - actually the comedy club occupies part of Heaven before its actual business hours (Heaven-one of the most famous gay bar in town - you must know it!).

The drink is in reasonable price, well, lets not expect a decent alcoholic selection as it’s not quite the primary object of being there.

I quite like the atmosphere that it’s not too packed, it’s just about the right number of audiences being let into the venue. There are 2 types of tickets - standing and seat. Standing is of course cheaper if you don’t mind being on your feet for the whole period, the good thing is you can sneak to the loo easily. Seat is slightly more expensive which I didn’t regret paying for that, the bad thing is it will take a while to crouch passing through people during the show to get to the end of the seating row when in need of the loo.

P.S. - I don’t recommend you girls rushing to the loo at the end of the show because they will close the main ladies’ loo at some point and usher you to share a much smaller one which is quite a nightmare in a very long narrow queue.

Buccaneer Inns - Tenby

A big surprise for pub grubs although the place itself is just normal, really. The pool table in the middle was quite absurd and made me feel like someone was going to poke me from the back with a big stick in a minute if I wasn’t keeping my eye on it. The place is not spacious enough to have a pool table I believe but it was forgiven when my dinner had gone through my throat.

Welsh Lamb Shank for a tenner - very meaty and indeed tender. The star of the evening was Seafood Scones - crispy crusty balls coated in garlic and stuffed with mixed seafood, loved it!

For brown beer drinkers, I only saw Welsh beers on the tab which I wasn’t surprised and didn’t stop myself from trying them on.

It’s a good place for shopping when you feel like buying things for yourself during holiday. Main products are clothing and accessories. There are also corners for home decoration items if you want to get someone a present, just bear in mind that it doesn”t have anything to do with Tenby or Wales’ symbol so you could say you get it from somewhere in the world.

The variety of brands is quite impressive and of course they don’t come with cheap prices considering that they are not the lastest collection but still in full price. Having said that, I may have to take into account that I only buy clothes in London and I might see fashion with a different attitude. Perhaps it’s not a good place for small women as I could not find anything that fit me - they seem to stock clothes for people in proper size only. Lots of good stuff for men though.

I would say this shop is like Tenby’s version of Oxford Street with less collection and less glamorous. Still, it’s good to pop in when you are in Tenby, so many dainty stuff as a souvenir.

I quite like the interesting interior design and all sorts this pub has to offer; good selection of beer, quick service, fair enough price…you name it. The small cat flap windows around the bar did entertain me and fasten the service a bit. Close it when you don’t want anything and open it when you want something, that’s how it worked for me.

One thing that made me feel unlucky was the gent’s room, it was way too stinky, I can smell it from where I sat which was metres away. I don’t know if the cleaner was on sick leave that day or it’s just the way it is.

Sanjit Chudha Eugh - stinky loos are a no-no

The Turks Head - Penzance

It’s an amphibious place (in a good sense), imagine going to a proper traditional pub to get a restaurant service. I felt a little awkward to sit there and order my brown beer at the table where I couldn’t see and hear those pumps. Please rest assured, services will be as usual pub regimes if you just drink but don’t have meal.

The Turks Head is said to be the oldest pub & restaurant in Penzance and Cornwall and attacts a great number of barflies and tourists hence it’s pretty busy. The garden at the back is a must in summer although I sat there in the rain for a while. Reservation is recommended for a smooth evening.

Good selection of real ales, fantastic food, prompt service and interesting decoration…yeah, lots of old stuff - it’s been there since 1233, what do you expect?

A round of applause for well-maintained atmosphere and superb food & drink.

My best place to have salad and pasta. We had salmon pasta and ocean salad and loved it so much that we wanted to go back again the next day. Everything was so fresh and delicious. It made me addicted to seafood even more. Kids menu is also available and pets are welcome here.

It is located on a small street in town so the only thing you will miss is the harbour view but I guarantee it won’t affect your dinner bliss.

Les Régates - La Rochelle

I kinda think there’re way too many tables outdoor and I didn’t really want to make new friends by nudging them during my dinner. Mussles are my staple here, cooked with sauces up to your desire; white wine, curry, eggs, to name a few. Better have them with fries (pay extra) to balance the fishy moment. Wines are not cheap here but very nice.

I actually gave them 3.5 stars out of 5 for fine drink, great food, good service but not very pleased with a packed dinner, alas.

Hôtel Ibis - La Rochelle

Place Commdt Motte Rouge, 17000 La Rochelle

It’s just another very basic soulless budget hotel in the world. It has almost everything you may need during the stay but nothing glam…hang on, they didn’t have a hairdryer in the room. By the fact that La Rochelle is a stunning town, you won’t spend much of a day in your room anyway.

There are 3 Ibis Hotels in La Rochelle, this one is the nearest one from the train station but the furthest from town centre hence it’s clean and quiet. It appeared to my sight before I had started to look it up on a very confusing map printed out from its website. Three of them are in the same price, 88 euros a night per room based on twin share (not that cheap innit?).

Let’s put it this way, it’s just a room to stay, it won’t make your day but it won’t let you down. Staff can speak English, hurrah!
