    Wigmore Pharmacy

This place is magic. If, like me, you like raking around a really good old fashioned pharmacy, with any quantity of old fashioned and “classic” toiletries, then visit here. You will find, for example, the largest range I’ve seen of Roger & Gallet anywhere, alongside Woods of Windsor and Yardley - not easy to find anywhere but somewhere like this.

I also found an extensive selection of hair colourants, and lots of general health and beauty oddities.

The shop itself is huge. I mean HUGE. You may wish to take breadcrumbs in your pocket to leave a trail to the door so that you can find your way out again.

It’s a bit of a beauty junkie Aladdin’s Cave. Staff gently drift round with beatific smiles, clearly amused by the “wow” factor of their slighly old-fashioned, but fascinating workplace.

    Whistles

1pxt EdibleDormouse last updated on 18-11-2008: (updated on 16-04-2009)

In direct contrast to the only other branch of Whistles that I have real experience of, the St. Christopher’s Place branch is welcoming and friendly. The clothes are beautiful, arty, and very expensive, and I’m a Whistles accessories freak rather than the clothes (actually, most of them don’t fit me anyway, because I’m not a stick, but that’s another story). However, a sales assistant did once go out of her way to find knitwear that would fit and flatter - a more personal service that was much appreciated, and ensured that I would go back and shop there again.

Recent purchases include a belt, a hat, and a pair of gloves. All very beautiful, and although expensive, definitely worth the money.

    Molton Brown

1pxt EdibleDormouse last updated on 19-11-2008:

Much as I adore the Molton Brown range, and use as much of it as I can whenever I can afford it, I’m afraid to say that the Regent Street branch is one of the most unpleasant shopping experiences I can remember in a long time.

First of all, the shop itself is nice enough. Beautifully laid out, full range of lovely products on display, and as always the products are enticing and delicious enough to sell themselves.

Which is just as well. I kid you not, my last visit last week involved being served (in the loosest sense of the word) by the surliest assistant it has ever been my displeasure to experience. In fact, I say surly, that’s just my assumption, as the transaction took place without a word from them, despite me asking at least two questions not of the rhetorical variety. It’s not as though I didn’t spend much, either.

I should hasten to add that this experience isn’t unusual. I would say I’ve been at best mildly miffed with service on at least the last three out of five visits.

I’m going across the road to John Lewis in future. The lady there is lovely.

    Space NK Apothecary

1pxt EdibleDormouse last updated on 19-11-2008:

Situated in what an ex-colleague of mine used to dub “Forgotten Anniversary Boulevard”, the Canary Wharf Space NK outlet is situated close to the bottom of the Tesco exit escalators down from the DLR, and next to an equally compact White Company outlet.

Reknowned for high end and luxury cosmetics and perfumery, popular brands include Kiehl’s, Aqua di Parma, and Diptyque - I used to buy a lot of the candles.

Best purchases tend to be Space NK own brand products. I’m still ekeing out a two year old eyebrow pencil, which is remarkably good quality.

Staff are slightly perfect and forbidding in that mildly botoxed and faultless way, but happy enough to help and advise.

  • Superdrug Stores - Catford

    Superdrug Stores

1pxt EdibleDormouse last updated on 19-11-2008:

Compared to its near neighbour in Lewisham, this Superdrug is a markedly better shopping experience. The store is logically laid out, clean (and my last visit was on a rainy day - the floor was still if not spotless, then not dirty), well stocked, and well staffed. As with the clash of the chemist titans half a mile or so down the road, the Superdrug experience is much more appealing.

The staff are also flexible enough to make exceptions - I urgently needed to make a purchase at closing time a few weeks back, and the security guard kindly let me in, escorted me to what I needed, and asked an equally cheery and helpful member of staff to ring up the purchase. I got the feeling that they weren’t exceptional, and that customer service is important in this particular branch.

Not a great area, but a good shopping experience.
