Blue Bar Cafe - Edinburgh
10 Cambridge Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 2ED
19-11-2008
Went for lunch here today and thoroughly enjoyed it. The food was very reasonably priced with an excellent ambience and great service.
The bar is just above the Traverse theatre and is a real gem, nice open room with lovely tables and seating. They were showing Manhattan on dvd which added to the feel of the place as well.
My husband and I both had the cauliflower soup for starter whoch was light and tasty, then I had vegetable gratin with beetroot anf blue cheese stilton which sounds really dull but was extremely tasty. My husband had a ribeye steak with tomato confit which he loved. For pud, I had a stem ginger panacotta and oh had cherry and walnut tart with nutmeg icecream. The food was lovely - if I could have licked my plate clean I would - and all of the food is locally produced and in season so the menu is constantly changing.
A real find.
Edinburgh Playhouse - Edinburgh
18-22 Greenside Place, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 3AA
18-11-2008
I really like the Playhouse but it is at it’s best when it is housing a really big musical, gig or stand-up comedian. It is such a huge space that smaller productions just get lost and it can be a bit embarrassing sitting watching people sing and dance their hearts out in front of a 3/4 empty audience.
But when it is full the energy is immense. I went to see Chris Rock there this year and it was amazing. Ross Noble is fab here too and I have seen Les Mis, Grease and many others over the years. It isn’t so good for music - I am not sure how good the acoustics are for bands but I would recommend going to see one of the big touring musicals here, and getting an ice-cream at the interval (althought they are very pricy!)
Next - Edinburgh
107-108 Princes Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH2 3AA
18-11-2008
After months of refurbishment this Next reopened not so long ago and it had really benefitted from it’s face-lift. It looks sleek and shiny-new and is well laid out although I do have to say that I hate having the kids department on the lower level, it just makes things that little bit harder for mums!
But it also makes it nicer for those who want to buy for themselves without having to worry about rugrats running around their feet.
They have a small but well-stocked home area and if you order through your Next Directory account you can pick your items up in store as well.
Boots The Chemists - Edinburgh
Unit 1 Fort Retail Park New Craighill Road, Edinburgh, Scotland EH15 3RH
18-11-2008
I like this Boots better than the big one in Princes Street as it is bright and airy, has a great range of items and it is all on the one level.
The Princes street Boots can be a bit of a nightmare if you have loads of shopping or are pushing a pushchair but this one is really spacious and easily accessible.
It also has a better selection of goods than some of the bigger stores. I did some christmas shopping recently and it had a lots of items that were not to be seen in the Princes Street store.
New Look - Edinburgh
Unit 11b Fort Retail Park, Lawhouse Toll, Edinburgh, Scotland EH15 3RH
18-11-2008
This is a nice, big store on two levels which has general clothing downstairs and shoes, accessories, young teens and maternity wear on the upper level.
It has a great range of cheaply prived t-shirts and jeans as well as a more expensive range of more cutting-edge fashion items. The accessories are bright and funky and the shop always seems to have a sale on. It can be a bit like a jumble sale at times and you need to have a good old rummage but it is worth it. It is a youthful store but I don’t feel out of place there although I hit 30 this year. Also does a great range in cheap work clothes.
Clarks International Retail - Edinburgh
11 South Groathill Avenue, Edinburgh, Scotland EH4 2LL
18-11-2008
I like shopping at the Quarry in Craigleith as it is quite new and has a nice selection of stores. One of the latest to open is the Clarks shop where I get my daughters shoes from. The staff are nice and take a long time making sure that children get the best fitting shoes. They have a good range of reasonably priced kids shoes and I find that they are really very hard-wearing.
I took my daughter in the holidays, just before the schools went back and we did have a bit of a wait for an assistant but they were really apologetic and I would prefer going to a place where they took the time to make sure the person got the right product than not.
Argos - Edinburgh
11-15 North Bridge, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1SB
18-11-2008
This Argos has been around for as long as I remember and it has always been a bit of a grim place to shop. The one in Craigleith is much brighter and spacious whereas this one seems to have never had a revamp in all of the time it has been open. The staff always seem harassed and I feel like time stops still while I am waiting for my goods to be delivered from the warehouse. Plus the shop itself seems so small you start imagining that the warehouse had to be like the tardis in order to accommodate all of the merchandise! Either that or they send out to the Fort for it instead. Maybe that is why it takes so long.
Cameo Bar - Leith
23 Commercial Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH6 6JA
17-11-2008
The Cameo Bar serves lovely food and has a really eclectic feel to it. It is an unusual space and it definitely has its regulars but they are not unfriendly at all. In fact the whole feel of the Bar is very welcoming.
It has an old-style charm to it and it is different from a lot of the pubs that have been springing up along the Shore since its development. The decor is now bang up to date since its makeover and it has retained it’s charm. It reminds me a bit of a Toulouse-Lautrec painting, and that can’t be a bad thing!
All Bar One - Edinburgh
1 Festival Square, Edinburgh, Scotland EH3 9SR
18-11-2008
This is really nice All Bar One which, although it is in the centre of a financial area, is welcoming to all-comers. My mum and her friend are in their sixties and this is one of their favourite places to go for a nice meal and a good glass of wine.
It is pleasant in the summer to sit outside and watch the world scurry by with a nice big glass of wine. The staff are well-versed when it comes to their wines and are on hand to offer advice as to what wines will go with which courses.
Mamas and Papas - Edinburgh
Craigleith Retail Park, Unit 10, South Groathill Avenue, Edinburgh, Scotland EH4 2LN
18-11-2008
It is nice to have a Mamas and Papas in Edinburgh, even if not many people actually know it is there. It is quite a small branch but the staff are knowledgeable and there is a small but good selection of bedding, sleeping bags, cots, buggies and clothing.
They give very good advice and can order in goods that aren’t in stock and arrange delivery or you can pick them up from the store. They quite often have good sales on and they sell really nice stuffed toys and smart clothing. I wouldn’t buy everyday wear from there but they are nice clothes for special events.
