Nordic Bar - Marylebone

25 Newman Street, Fitzrovia, London W1T 1PN

09-07-2010

Lovely and faithful nordic food, don't know many other bars where can buy pickled herring and gravlax to go with a beer. Took the workmates for lunch and they loved the food. Nice chilled atmosphere and friendly staff. A little dark in the celler for a summers day but nice venue overall.

The Doric - Edinburgh

15-16 Market Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1DE

Best Pub meal I have had in a long time and with great service. Great price on their set price 3 course menu. Very highly recommended.

Scandinavian Kitchen - Fitzrovia

61 Great Titchfield Street, London W1W 7PP

Being a semi nord was delighted to find this place just 200m from work. A chance to subject the workmates to the delights of pickled herring never goes amiss and am glad to say all enjoyed the food.

An explanation of what’s on offer is already provided by other reviewers so won’t go into that, and would agree it’s all fresh and tasty.

The grocery selection is a nice touch, especially for those who recognise a few old favourites on the shelves. Good for a few treats though, such as authentic salmiakki.

La Cave A Fromage London - South Kensington

25 Cromwell Place, South Kensington, London SW7 2LD

16-04-2009

Had the good fortune to attend a La Cave cheese and wine tasting evening recently and was truly a fine experience.

A nice range of diverse cheeses were provided from potent goats cheeses, which were really quite nice (and that’s from a non goats cheese liker normally) to a red wine washed delight.

All cheeses were explained and accompanied with suitable wine, tasty bread and a selection of cured meats and other nibbles.

Strongly recommended for small groups keen to have a fun and knowledge expanding evening with a slight difference.

Castle Climbing Centre - Stoke Newington

Green Lanes, London N4 2HA

14-02-2009

Certainly one of London’s best climbing walls. Offering a good selection of routes over 3 floors. There are a large amount of top ropes in place to suit the beginner as well as a good selection of leading walls and a range of bouldering to suit all types.

The first floor is dominated by a range of top roping and leading walls alongside a slabby to vertical bouldering wall and some more advanced training facilities, campus boards etc.

The middle floor offers a range of bouldering including some nice steep traverse around two large blocs, well set up especially for the beginner. It also boasts some traversing and the best bouldering area in a slightly dropped level. There are a good range of graded routes here from the 4s to 6s to suit all.

The top floor offers the tallest leading walls, a concrete featured bouldering wall and coffee shop.

Grades throughout are quite tough compared to most opther climbing walls, expressed in French and english tech grades for routes and V and English tech grades for Bouldering.

Whilst fairly expensive for a one off visit, around £15 including joining fee, there are longer term unlimited usage tickets available which offer verry good value if you can visit more frequently. e.g. £115 for a quarter which means you can climb for 7 or 8 quid if you are prepared to visit a couple of times a week.

Easy access from Manor House tube stop on the Piccadilly line. The only downside is probably the inevitable popularity although you never have to wait long as there are plenty of routes to do.

Carmen Bar & Tapas - Clapham

6 Clapham Common South Side, Clapham, London SW4 7AA

15-10-2008

Generous portions of pretty standard but nice tapas, reasonably priced. We spent around £22 per head including wine and were full.

The tapas itself was tasty and pretty analagous to tapas have had in most of Spain. Portions bigger though so 2 or 3 dishes per head to share seemed plenty with bread and olives as well. Particularly liked the fish dishes, anchovies and sardines etc.

Atmosphere was lively but not loud, the staff all friendly and service quick and efficient.

Will definately go back.

Cha Cha Moon - Soho

15-21 Ganton Street, Soho, London W1F 9BN

02-09-2008

Thumbs up. Cheap and cheerful with a range of dishes pretty much all priced at £3.50. Good variety of dishes and a vegetarian friend was also pleased to have a number of choices, although they didn’t seem quite as tasty as the meat options.

As with many of these type places it is bench style seating along long tables but the decor is smart and modern.

Service is friendly and efficient. Perfect for a quick but tasty lunch.

The Pepper Tree - Clapham

19 Clapham Common Southside, Clapham, London SW4 7AB

Great value, tasty thai food, friendly staff. Informal canteen style gives it a cheap and cheerful atmosphere. Strongly recommended.

The Arch Climbing Wall - London Bridge

6 Bermondsey Street, London SE1 2ER

06-07-2008

Nice bouldering facility, on the small side but makes good use of the space to provide a range of challenging problems. Route setting is interesting and varied with the bonus of contributions from such luminaries as Johnny Dawes. Friendly staff and atmosphere.
Only criticism would be that it’s slightly overpriced compared to other facilities, although if it’s to survive in such a central location this is probably understandable.
As it’s a bouldering venue there’s naturally a slight emphasis towards more experienced climbers, but still a good selection of easier routes exist, and beginners classes are offered.

Undercover Rock - Bristol

St Werburghs Church St Werburghs Park, Bristol BS2 9YT

06-07-2008

Nice wall with a good range of climbs in an atmospheric old church. Still holds it’s own against some the bigger newer walls. A good facility all in all.
