PizzaExpress - Canterbury
4-5 Best Lane, Canterbury, Kent CT1 2JB
19-01-2009
This is very much your typical Pizza Express, with very high quality food and good service that you would expect if you’ve ever been to one before. This particular Pizza Express is situated in a quiet side street just of Canterbury High St in a lovely old building. Very nice!
The Thomas Becket - Canterbury
21 Best Lane, Canterbury, Kent CT1 2JB
19-01-2009
This pub is a reasonable sized pub, though still quite cosy. The atmosphere was nice and the staff were friendly. It is also very handy for a quick pint just before (or after!) a meal at Pizza Express, which is just across the street.
Prezzo - Canterbury
28 High Street, Canterbury, Kent CT1 2AZ
19-01-2009
Prezzos is a lovely restaurant, complete with large pizza oven and open plan kitchen, so you can see the food being prepared. It was a busy Saturday night when we went but the service was attentive, without being a pain in the proverbial!
Sadly, I was a little disappointed by the food with the calamari starter and pizza both being rather chewy.
Richbourgh Roman Fort - Sandwich
Richborough Castle Richborough, Sandwich, Kent CT13 9JW
16-01-2009
Tucked out of the way just outside Sandwich and accessible down a narrow road, these Roman ruins are well worth a visit if you’re in the area or if your kids are doing Roman history at school!
It is impressive to see how well the ramparts of the fort have lasted, considering that part of the fort was constructed around 1,700 years ago! There is plenty of information about the site available and a small shop selling the usual nick nacks and books.
Herne Bay Museum and Gallery - Herne Bay
12 William Street, Herne Bay, Kent CT6 5EJ
16-01-2009
This museum does suffer from being a bit on the small side and spread over two floors, but there is a reasonable range of historical information about Herne Bay and the local area to be found inside. The staff are full of information about local history if you care to ask them.
Cain's Amusements - Herne Bay
123-125 Central Parade, Herne Bay, Kent CT6 8SS
16-01-2009
This place is ok if you’re a fan of fruit machines, arcade games, 2p machines and grabbers, but watch out for the hordes of kids during the summer months.
The staff are friendly and the place is conveniently located next to the beach, so you can dump the kids in there if you fancy a bit of peace and quiet on the beach :)
English Heritage: Reculver Towers And Roman Fort - Herne Bay
A299, Herne Bay, Kent CT6 6SS
16-01-2009
Reculver Towers is the remains of a 12th century church, which is located on the remains of Roman and Saxon buildings. The Towers themselves are perched on the top of a large cliff, which has been heavily eroded in the past and is the reason why there are only partial remains of the church left standing.
Due to its location on the north coast, the towers lend themselves to some lovely photographs with the sunset to their rear and the sea to one side.
There is a large stony beach at the base of the cliffs, which is ideal for dog walking rather than bathing, as the Thames Estuary leaves it somewhat muddy. Also be aware that the tide can come rather far in at certain times of the year, partially cutting off some areas at the base of the cliffs!!
There are reputed to be a decent number of fossils to be found along the beach, especially following storms, though me and the dog have never found anything exciting.
There is ample parking in the vicinity of the towers, good paths suitable for wheelchairs and buggies along the cliff top. There is also a pub very close by and a small shop/amusements arcade associated with the nearby caravan park.
All in all, a nice place for a picnic or for a stroll.
King Charles Hotel - Gillingham
Brompton Road, Gillingham ME7 5QT
02-01-2009
This is a pretty basic hotel, but now the night club is closed you no longer get the 'temporary’ guests on a friday and saturday night that used to grace the place. It is conveniently located and there is ample parking.
B & Q - Chestfield
Reeves Way, Whitstable, Kent CT5 3QS
02-01-2009
This is a reasonable B&Q store, though it is slightly smaller than some of the more modern branches. There is nevertheless a decent range of tools, materials, and garden stuff and the staff are helpful. It is located out of the town centre on a small trading estate, half way between Herne Bay and Whitstable.
The Hippodrome - Herne Bay
Kings Road, Herne Bay, Kent CT6 5DB
02-01-2009
The Hippodrome is a kids indoor play centre, with slides, climbing frames and toddler area. Kids parties are available and the staff are friendly and helpful. Prices are different depending on whether peak or off-peak prices apply.
