sohot Bikram yoga - Fitzrovia

Threeways House, Bolsover Street, London W1W 5DW

06-06-2011

I've only tried a couple of Bikram classes in the past. When I was thinner and fitter. But a friend and I tottered off to a Sunday morning class this weekend and I was pleasantly surprised. Not at my lack of fitness, but I did like this studio a lot. Why?

1. the floor. The last studio I went to had carpet. Imagine - fifty sweaty bodies a 40 degree room, five times a day. Sohot has some kind of technical-looking extruded plastic stuff. I don't know what it is but I prefer it.
2. The equipment - there are mats to borrow, which are decent quality. Towels can be hired, and water bought too.
3. The changing rooms - spacious and light and clean.
4. The teacher - pleasant, helpful, with individual attention even in a big group (although admittedly the class was only half full, early on a Sunday)

Yes, there's an "odour" when you go into the studio itself but you get used to it. Overall it's a lovely calm practice space. They offer 10 days for £25 as a taster, along with other seasonal offers.

Just make sure you heed the long list of rules, some of which may be slightly tongue in cheek - apart from "No whingeing or complaining"...

sarahdrinkwater This place is about 5 mins from Qype HQ & Janeb & I have been meaning to go for ages! Thanks for this, perhaps it will give us the push we need to get sweaty...?!
PS. Carpet? Ew!

The Modern Pantry - Clerkenwell

47-48 St John’s Square, Clerkenwell, London EC1V 4JJ

24-07-2010

Meh.

First off, when the service is so absent-minded and disinterested that you have to concoct a back story for the waitress ("Ohhh, bless her. Her cat died this morning. That's why she's so miserable") to give her the benefit of the doubt, then you're doing more of the hard work for any decent restaurant than you should rightly have to.

I haven't been to Providores for years but the breakfast there was legendary. I'm not convinced that the inspired cooking has been transferred over here, though I believe that's where Modern Pantry's head chef used to work. This feels like a slightly more sanitised, less heart, less confidence version of the Garrison in Bermondsey. We had brunch - waffles with bacon and maple syrup and frou-frou pea shoots, fruit salad, a croissant, an affogato and a share of the bottles of Prosecco on the table - which worked out to £50 for two. We were there with excellent company which made the afternoon but I think there are many many places nearby doing much better food, in equally comfortable surroundings, without the begrudged service for the same or much less cash.

MissRachelle STILL laughing at the cat comment :)

Organic store - Birr

Main Street, Birr

14-07-2010

A great source of fresh organic produce and a variety of big organic brands. The shop is also a primary source of Mossfield organic gouda cheese, as well as some organic toiletries. It has a great range for a small town.

Dishoom - Covent Garden

12 Upper St Martins Lane, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9FB

14-07-2010

Was aware that Dishoom would be opening and I'm really glad to see that it's even better than I expected. Loved the daal and the exceptionally fresh breads. The calamari is amazing, fresh, sweet and tangy. We were also there during soft launch but thought the staff were fab, it bodes well.

If they do Gola ice as takeaway I'll be haunting them, and intend to return for a sausage naan for breakfast soon too!

Las Vegas Nails - Hackney

320 Mare Street, London E8 1HA

05-05-2010

Have to say - this place used to be great but went with a friend the other day and it was rushed and not at all thorough. We'd booked ahead and even though they weren't busy, we were rushed through. And the place eally needs a good clean! Shame, as it used to be really good.

Phil Chambers I definitely won't be getting mine done here!

TESS-toos Do them yourself!

Check out Jacava.com

You can get the nail art and stick it all on your nails. I don't think you need to register as a pro to do that.

Cookbook Cafe - Mayfair

1 Hamilton Place Park Lane, Belgravia, London W1J 7QY

11-04-2010

Things that you definitely should do at the Cookbook Cafe:

- Go when you have time to linger, preferably on the weekend
- Get a group together and get everyone on board with the Bubbles and Brunch menu, excellent value at £39 with bottomless Bellinis or Bloody Marys
- Pace yourselves, there's a lot of choice and it's all good
- Have the awesome malted waffles
- Browse the cookbooks on various shelves around the room (apparently Brits normally think they shouldn't touch)

Don't
- think of it as just a hotel - it's a standalone restaurant in its own right
- forget to walk off the gastronomic excess with a stroll around Hyde Park afterwards, if the weather permits
- eat before you go!

Drinksfusion - London

1 Caldwell Street, London SW9 0HD

10-04-2010

(A) I loved that all his cocktails were made with gin, and (B) I was even more impressed that the After Eight Alexander was made with cognac and cream, which I loathe and yet it still tasted AMAZING. Johan said he'd tried really hard to keep the flavour of the chocolate - by melting them - and it was completely delish. Fab attention to detail.

It would be an utter luxury to have them for a house party, plus they can obviously come with amazing themed cocktails to order.

Leluu & The Supper Club - Hackney

London E8 3PG

10-11-2009 (updated on 10-04-2010)

Well firstly it's important to note that this spectacular supper club is not in fact in Big Ben as illustrated on the map. As it's in a private house, you have the address confirmed to you just before the event - see their website for full booking details.

Simon and Yuen are avid foodies and wonderful hosts. From their blog you can see how much time, patience and passion they invest in this project - in addition to fulltime jobs.

I coveted their vintage typewriters. I adored the napkins and crockery. And we devoured everything on the seven course menu, from the hot and sour catfish soup through to the the macha green tea ice cream. We passed a deliriously enjoyable few hours there and lingered afterwards along with some of the other guests. The menu changes every week. All the more reason to keep going back, again and again and again...

The Hawksmoor - City of London

157 Commercial Street, London E1 6BJ

25-03-2010

Hawksmoor's breakfast is a relatively new offering and naturally it's geared towards the carnivore. We were offered so much awesome protein that it made us a little bit giddy, frankly. A deliciously acidic martini helped cut through a morning-after hangover and though a bottomless Bloody Mary is about the worst thing I could think of (loathe tomato juice), all the other diners raved about it.

Full menu is available as well during breakfast serving hours which means the burger, only previously offered Mon-Fri, can be savoured at the weekend too. We'll be going back for that. Make sure you do ask if there is something you fancy that's off the menu as they're really accommodating.

Reading other reviews here about the prices, I remembered that we got a discount (on the food) as it was the first weekend but the prices were comparable to say Roast's 2-for-1 breakfasts before 9:00 on Saturdays, but the food was better.

Angela Malik Cookery School - Acton

6 Churchfield Road, Acton, London W3 6EG

23-03-2010

I'm very late putting this up: especially unforgiveable given that this was absolutely my favourite Qype event so far!

"Walk into the deli at the front of the shop, accept a very chilled glass of wine, decompress. Awake taste buds (which you’ll need shortly) by nibbling bread loaded with their signature pestos. Peer down the demo room lined with long stainless steel tables, stations awaiting chefs. Or Qypers, at any rate."

And I've added my photos to the gallery above. Thanks again Eamon for organising - it was a great event and somewhere I wouldn't have discovered if Qype hadn't introduced me to it.
