The Dalesway - Keighley

502 Bradford Road, Keighley, West Yorkshire BD20 5NG

03-12-2011

A fairly standard Brewers Fayre Pub and Restaurant. Nicely decorated and roomy. The tables don’t seem to be on top of each other so you don’t feel squashed in.
A little disappointed that the menu had two for £10 meals but then I discovered that they were only weekdays.
There were three of us, myself and two 14 year olds. Two of us had smothered chicken and the third had beefburger. The smothered chicken came with chips, coleslaw and salad and a little pot of barbecue sauce. The burger was similar without the sauce. Everyone came away happy with their food.
The good point is that they have unlimited soft drinks that you help yourself to but something I hadn’t seen elsewhere was unlimited hot drinks too. I got a cappuchino but followed this up with a latte later.
We didn’t venture further up the pub but I gather there was a children’s play area there too.

Someone who knew the owner of this restaurant had organised our meal our here. There were about 40 of us altogether.
They had come to a special arrangement that we didn’t choose the meal from a menu but we got a three course meal for £12.
The starters were individually plated up and consisted of Shish Kebab, Onion Bhajis and a tiny, tiny dollop of rice accompanied by two dips, a yoghurt based one and a sweet and sour one that had a bit of fire but wasn’t teeth melting. This was very tasty.
The main course was chicken or lamb and pillau rice. We helped ourselves to the rice and the chicken came served in balti dishes while the lamb was in wonderful little buckets. Nobody said what they were but they were beautifully spiced without the silly overheating that cheaper restaurants rely on.
The pudding was the sweet rice pudding that Asians seem so keen on. It was spiced up with cinnamon and there was some small pieces of fruit in it as well. The jury was out on this but I love it.
The staff were fantastic. Warm, friendly, polite and funny.
The difference with this place is they are health orientated. They cook the food without oil. They have low-fat, low calorie, reduced salt and lots of other healthy ways of preparing and cooking food.
The surroundings are modern, clean and comfortable. Lots of room, not crowded like some restaurants. They also have an outdoor shisha lounge!
I will definitely be making my way back there again soon.

Sleningford Watermill Caravan and Camping Park - North Stainley

North Stainley, Ripon, North Yorkshire HG4 3HQ

Fabulous caravan and camping site situated right next to the River Ure. ust a few miles up the road from Lightwater Valley Theme park. It has a canoe shop and rental on site although the shop is not part of the site’s business. There is a general shop that sells great bacon butties and the usual provisions as needed.

The site is really well looked after but there seems to be a bit of a downer on canoeists from the management. I have been here many times and it is not a cheap site by any means but that is acceptable when the level of management is good.

However there are now signs on the toilets that say ‘no wetsuits in the toilets’ so how are canoeists meant to go to the loo? If it means no washing of wetsuits in the toilet and shower area why haven’t they offered an alternative. Every other campsite that I have been to where watersports are predominant provide something.

You can use the river without camping here, you just pay for parking but they have stopped you being able to drive nearer to the river. So you have to drag all your equipment through the car park, over or under a barrier and some way down the campsite.

Once a year there is a big canoe slalom held here which brings in lots of campers and caravanners from all over the country for the weekend and lots of them become returners during the following year. However the management seem intent on driving this out by increasing the prices dramatically and putting so many restrictions in place and being miserable with all concerned. The previous managers joined in and always seemed pleasant and helpful. However there always seem to be a good rapport between all the site users.

Anyway despite all this, the site is in a beautiful spot with good roads and lots of countryside for walking in. There is a lovely walk along the river that comes out in West Tanfield which is the most picturesque place with a church and a Pele Tower next to it. It is also home to a couple of pubs that do good food and in summer there is a beer garden next to the river.

There is a Dales bus service that calls into the campsite and it is a vintage vehicle. Always nice to see it but it also means you can leave your car and go for a relaxing trip without worrying about getting lost.

White Rose - Leeming Bar

12 Bedale Road, Northallerton, North Yorkshire DL8 9AY

11-08-2011

As we were going for a ride on the Wensleydale Railway and we were early for the train we thoiught we would seek out some lunch.

The first place we came across was The White Rose who proudly proclaimed that they did a carvery and that was enough for my partner to be happy.

We parked in the car park and noted that it wasn’t particularly busy.

Inside the pub has been modernised and re-decorated and looked very nice. The pub was fairly quiet which surprised me. The girl behind the bar was smiling and cheerful and greeted us warmly. We ordered three carveries (without viewing the rest of the menu) and a pint of beer and two cokes came to a little over £30.

We picked a place to sit which wasn’t difficult as there were only about 6 people in the main pub area and about the same in the bright airy conservatory. Then we went to the carvery. There was a choice of beef, turkey and gammon and the server was happy for us to have more than one of the meats.

He then asked if we wanted Yorkshires and stuffing and then we helped ourselves to the veg and gravy and sauces. There was a good selection of veg including carrots, cauliflower cheese and mashed swede.

We sat back down and that’s when I had a bit of an accident. The tables were too close to the bench seating so I tried to move it a bit and my drink spilled all over. The male staff member, possibly the landlord, quickly got a mop and cleared up the spilt liquid politely but without humour and didn’t try to put us at our ease. I explained what had happened. He didn’t comment.

We discovered the veg were lukewarm. The meats were okay although my beef was a bit grisly. Nice enough meal but nothing terribly exciting.

My daughter then had the most expensive dessert on the menu, chocolate scrapheap, which was like a brownie with bits of maltesers, dime bars etc in it. It looked lovely but was very dry and quite tasteless. There was nothing with it ie ice cream, cream or custard to moisten it a bit. The bit I was most surprised at though was that it contained nuts and there was nothing on the menu to indicate this. No problem to us but it could have had consequences for others. At £4.25 it was definitely overpriced.

I wouldn’t make a beeline for the place again but I wouldn’t avoid it like the plague either.

We went to this Italian inspired restaurant for a colleague's leaving do. There were 12 of us in all and we had placed our orders beforehand as we were heading in for the Early Bird. We had to be there by 7.30pm.

We sat in the reception area for while having a drink and chatting. The place seemed to be fairly quiet although a few people drifted in or out while we were sat waiting.

We were shown to a long table and the food soon started to arrive. I had pate for starters, with onion jam. It was very tasty and served as usual with small pices of toast and a little bit of salad on the side. My neighbour had melon which was a little bit on the boring side. There were several people who had garlic mushrooms who seemed to enjoy them.

Soon after the starters were cleared the mains started to arrive. I had chicken in a peppercorn and brandy sauce which was really tasty it was accompanied by new potatoes. Small dishes of carrots, broccoli and cauliflower appeared for us share. This was the only thing that seemed to be a bit stingy. Others had pizzas with differing reviews. My neighbour said hers was tasty but the dough was undercooked underneath. Others had no comolaints about their's. One person had calamari and pronounced it good.

Puddings were last on the list of course. I had tiramisu which was lovely but not extraordinary. Others had chocolate fudge cake or just ice cream.

It was £10.95 for two courses or £11.95 for three. Well worth it and would visit again.

Mamma Mia - Bradford

Our team from work visited here for our Christmas meal out.

There were about 12 of us and they had already taken our orders before we got there. There wasn't too much of a wait in the waiting area and we were shown to our table. The staff were friendly and helpful but not obstrusive.

Our meals were varied and the overall impression was the food was really good. Even though they were busy we never got the feeling that they were trying to get us in, fed and out. The coffees were taken at a nice leisurely pace and the prices were not scarey apart from the wine. I believe they were charging about £14 for a bottle of house wine.

I would definitely recommend the place and go there again myself.

Lloyds No. 1 Bar - Bradford

Centenary Square, Bradford, West Yorkshire BD1 1HY

27-01-2010

Been here a few times and it's alright but nothing to write home about. Yes it's nice to sit outside and watch the giant screen in Summer if you can find a seat.

However we went in as a group just before Christmas and found it very busy downstairs so opted to go upstairs where it was a bit quieter so we could carry on chatting and socialising. Lo and behold a DJ then started up. The music was so loud that you had to shout in each others ears to be heard.

The toilets are big and fairly spacious but were very untidy with used tissues strewn all over the sink areas and near the mirrors. The bins were overflowing.

Not a pleasant atmosphere on the whole.

The City Vaults - Bradford

33 Hustlergate, Bradford, West Yorkshire BD1 1NT

27-01-2010

A lively pub that still feels like a pub rather than a 'bar'. Visted it just before Christmas with a party of people from work. The place was heaving but good-humoured and not in the least bit threatening. Managed to find a cosy corner where we could chat and drink. The music was at an acceptable level so that you could enjoy it without having to scream over the top of it.

The one drawback for me and the other females was the ladies toilets were the other side of the pub to where we were and up some stairs. It took ages to get through the crowds both ways.

The decor is typically staged stuff including old pictures of Bradford. Staff were friendly and quick so despite the crowds there wasn't much of a wait to be served.

For the better weather there is even some outside seating with parasols but it was a bit nippy out there around Christmas time.

Post Office - Bradford

38-40 Darley Street, Bradford, West Yorkshire BD1 3HN

27-01-2010

This is a big Post Office and very modern inside. There are quite a few 'windows' in here but often half of them aren't in use. It has a Bureau De Change and sells lots of stationery etc.

The worst thing about this Post Office is that there is virtually always a long queue that snakes round the shop and out to the door. That's possibly expected around lunchtime but I have visited at mid and late afternoon and come across a massive queue here.

Sometimes they have a member of staff who asks people what they are coming in for. If it's just to pick up a form or some simple advice then they deal with it to stop people having to wait quite so long.

Tap & Spile - Harrogate

Tower Street, Harrogate, North Yorkshire HG1 1HS

27-01-2010

Not an upmarket establishment but certainly not a dive either. They used to do food but when the new rules and regs came in they decided to stop the food side of it altogether.

It's a real ale pub but whenever I have been in it hasn't been packed. They have a list of guest ales on a blackboard that is changed regularly. The landlord is a friendly, helpful chap called Roger.

The ladies toilets are clean enough but a bit run down. There is a very small amount of parking space but there is a decent sized p & d car park next to it and a multi storey car park opposite this. There is a small area outside at the back with a table and chairs.

Best of all the pub has a lovely spaniel called Molly.
