Quarryman's Arms - Corsham

Box Hill, Corsham, Wiltshire SN13 8HN

21-10-2010

I love this place. A country pub thats not afraid to stay 'pub', instead of going posh. The pub is very welcoming. You come in, bar in front, a snug to your right, and to the left a lovely eating area with probably the best views in the county. Food is great. I'm a vegetarian and enjoyed a stilton/ asparagus pancake (£8.50 as a main). My friend had a tasty wild mushroom quiche. My partner eats fish and had loads of dishes to choose from. Service was very pleasant. Great overall. And lovely area to go walking; either to build up an appetite, or to walk the fish and chips off. As it is a bit out of the way, you should be pleased to know there is plenty of parking as well.

Northey Bar & Restaurant - Corsham

Bath Road, Corsham, Wiltshire SN13 8AE

21-10-2010

I love the Northey's decor, dim lightining, candles etc but as a vegetarian the menu let us it down. For main course there was a choice between stuffed pepper and tagliatelle. Not very inspiring dishes... food I make myself at home without getting charged £11.70 for it! It's a shame, otherwise lovely place.

Blackford Hill - Edinburgh

Lovely place to go for a walk with your partner, the kids or your dog(s). From the city centre take bus 15 or 11 and get off where Comiston Rd meets Braid Rd. Then walk up Braid Rd (heading north); after crossing a stone bridge you’ll find the entrance to the park on your right. First you’ll pass through beautiful woodland. Pay a visit to the visitor centre - it’s worth it. It has toilets and a wonderful display of all the animals living in this park. Also lots of stuff for kids. Then continue on your walk. When you get out of the woodlands take the stone steps to your left and follow the path. Eventually you’ll see steps to your right taking you to the summit of Blackford Hill. Great views. Lots of benches to sit down and take in the scenery!

Bella Italia Edinburgh Northbridge - Edinburgh

55 Northbridge, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1SB

Staff are very understanding and friendly, but I’ve been there now three times and everytime something was wrong with either the order or the food. Although the problems were minor and eventually resolved, it does make me feel this place is not worth more than three stars. I also find that the menu options for vegetarians/vegans are limited which is a real shame. Oh, if you order Tiramisu for dessert, then you’re one lucky person if you actually end up with it. Out of the three times I’ve been, twice they’d run out of Tiramisu!! Finally please be aware that this restaurant gets very busy and on the weekend there’s usually a queue. It pays to book a table!

The Baked Potato Shop - Edinburgh

56 Cockburn Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1PB

I love this little Old Town gem. It’s a great place to have a cheap lunch - excellent place for vegetarians, vegans and people that don’t mind going without meat this once.

The choices of potato fillings are creative and endless, with both hot and even more cold options. My favourite is the (cold) cheese, onion and pineapple stuffing! For £3.75 that’s one of the cheapest lunches I can have in the city without cooking myself. My partner’s favourite is the (warm) vegie curry.

The staff is very friendly and efficient - you don’t have to wait long even if there is a line. You may choose to eat in but I never do. I either take it home or, if weather permits, take it to Princes St Gardens for a lovely picnic.

Vittorias Family Restaurant - Edinburgh

113 Brunswick Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH7 5HR

Staff are very attentive and the menu just goes on and on. Lots of choice for everyone, including vegetarians. The pizzas are HUGE and delicious. For ice cream lovers, you’ll be pleased to know that the dessert card has an endless list of different flavours. I can’t really fault this restaurant; except for its location. It’s a bit out of the way for me. But that doesn’t stop me from coming back. It’s the best ‘value for money’ Italian in town.

The Elephant House - Edinburgh

21 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1EN

I adore this little gem and whenever I have guests from out of town I take them here for a midmorning coffee and snack on the side. It attracts such a mixed crowd: tourists, students working away on their laptops, office workers grabbing a quick coffee or lunch. It all adds to the buzz of this place. There is a big selection of teas and coffees; I usually go for the plain old black perculator coffee. £1.85 for a HUGE cup, an additional £50 for any refill. And it tastes good!

The interior is laidback and relaxed with quirky little elephants everywhere, making me feel like I’m sitting in one of my friend’s lounge rooms. There is no pretentiousness here - everyone is welcome. Grab yourself a seat in the back next to the window and you’ll find yourself having a stunning view of the Castle. Alternatively, browse through the selection of newspapers and magazines available.

Yes, it gets busy so if you can help it avoid this place during lunch times when all the office workers stream in. But apart from that this place is really worth a visit. Don’t forget to grab a pastry. They have a fantastic selection; all of them to die for!

Black Medicine Coffee Co - Edinburgh

2 Nicolson Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH8 9DH

The atmosphere/interior and the quality of the coffee are second to none. People of all walks of life and ages feel comfortable here. It must have something to do with the eclectic wooden furniture and a nice soft lighting which makes everyone look at their best ;-) !! The whole place feels very welcoming - like a warm blanket on a cold winter’s day.

The coffees and cappuchinos are excellent and presented very nicely. The only downside for me is the volume of the music. Maybe I’m getting old, but I prefer my music to play softly in the background allowing for easy conversation. But here they like their music loud and clear! This does not stop me from coming back though. The coffee is way too good for that!

Edinburgh Backpackers Hostel - Edinburgh

65 Cockburn Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH1 1BU

20-05-2008

I stayed here a couple of days last June. We had a double room with ensuite shower and WC for £60. The private rooms are great for couples or people who appreciate privacy. These rooms are btw not on Cockburn Street (the main address) but off Fleshmarket Close. You go to reception in the main building where staff will take you to the Fleshmarket rooms.

Our room was small but clean. The bed was huge and very comfortable (with duvet!!). Although in the middle of the city, surprisingly quiet. The TV didn’t work and staff at reception didn’t know how to fix it. They promised that someone would come and repair the tv but that never happened. We weren’t too fussed as we were out most of the time anyway.

We visited the main building every day to check our emails and do the laundry. They have one TV room with a big LCD and 4 or 5 computers. The seating area for people watching tv is very close to the computers, so if you’re checking your email you don’t have much privacy.

£60 is expensive for hostel accommodation but we liked having privacy and our own shower/bathroom. You also can’t beat the location. Staff is not very knowledgable (mostly backpackers themselves) but very friendly and helpful. I’d stay again.

Mackenzie Medical Centre - Edinburgh

20 West Richmond Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH8 9DX

20-05-2008

Not very impressed with this Medical Centre. The reception staff are friendly and attentive, but my concern lies with the (lack of) medical knowledge of the medical staff working there. This is scary as this medical centre is linked with Edinburgh University.

Paracetemol seems to do the trick no matter what health concerns you have, and the GPs appear to be reluctant to refer patients to specialists or further tests. Maybe this has something to do with an overloaded NHS system I don’t know, but as a patient it doesn’t make me feel looked after or confident in their abilities.

Twice now my GP had to look things up in a medical handbook. Twice she asked me to pick a drug from a long list of Latin names that don’t mean a thing to me. Who’s the expert? That’s what I’m left wondering everytime I visit this place. Although it is convenient location wise, I’m now looking for a new medical centre to register with. Don’t bother with this crowd.
