The Broadwater - Worthing

4 Broadwater Street West, Worthing, West Sussex BN14 9DA

28-10-2012

I went here today with my family to have an early lunch. We placed our order at about 12h45 when the pub was about half full. 35 minutes later, we had to go to the bar to ask where the food was and was told it'd be another 20 minutes. Faced with 2 hungry children, I decided to cancel the food order (aside from my husband's, who was staying for the football and so had lots of time to spare) and go get something for them to eat at the local supermarket.

My husband's gammon and chips finally arrived at 13h55. Honestly, it's not haute cuisine and so there is no excuse for not being sufficiently prepared for a Sunday lunchtime and making customers wait (without warning them) over an hour for some pretty basic food.

I dare say it's a nice pub in other respects, but I'm so furious at the poor service I can't possibly recommend it.

The Constant Service - Brighton

96 Islingword Rd, Brighton BN2 9SJ

We went here for lunch and oh my - hidden gem! If you fancy some proper, home-made, traditional pub food (basically a choice of half a dozen pies (+mash, veg and gravy) plus beef burger, gammon, egg'n'chips and a few things on the specials board) that isn't trying to be something it's not, then try out The Constant Service.

In all else, I completely agree with VonTurbo, although I have to add that they must be in the process of refitting the toilets, which are now just missing a lick of paint and will be very nice indeed (although small) when they're finished.

Espresso Bar - Lancing

Lancing, West Sussex BN15 0

Brand new coffee place in Lancing, serving a really nice espresso (can't ask for much better!)

The owners are really nice too, and very accommodating. It's child-friendly with a cosy corner at the back with a few toys.

Sussex Potter - Lancing

43 Manor Road, Lancing, West Sussex BN15 0EU

Unlike the previous reviewer, I found the Sussex Potter (or rather Miller&Carter) to serve a very good steak. Isn't that what you go to a steakhouse for, after all?

The portions were generous and the staff were very attentive. The children's menu is lovely, with real meals, rather than the "burger/sausage/nuggets and chips" options and my two cleaned their plates. My steak was a bit overdone to my liking, so I politely told the staff and they had no hesitation in cooking another (at the best part of £20, I really want it to be right - cheaper and I wouldn't have commented). In fact, they took away my husband's dishes too so that we could still dine at the same time, which was sweet, but unnecessary in my opinion.

Anyhow, it's a nice atmosphere. We ate there during the day and have been back since of an evening for drinks, which were also very pleasant. No, it's not a traditional pub and the bar area is relatively small, but the garden is lovely. I'll be going back!

Pestle & Mortar - Worthing

44 Portland Road, Worthing, West Sussex BN11 1QN

20-05-2012

I used to go when it was Pestle and Mortar and loved it.  Now, with the new name and new management, it's just as good, serving the same good quality, tasty and unusual dishes (mainly appropriate for lunches, I would say) with lovely staff.

Definitely, without a doubt, my favourite lunch-time bolt-hole when I'm shopping in Worthing.

Original Chipwick - Worthing

Consistently great fish'n'chips.

I would prefer a slightly larger haddock, but that's only because it's so good!

Interwok - Worthing

OK, I'd actually give the food 3 stars, but the effort they've made to have such a wide selection in the buffet earns them an extra one!

I went with a group of friends one evening it it was a good value meal.  Nothing was extraordinary, but it hit the spot nicely.  There was plenty of sushi to choose from, a wide selection of dishes and sides in tureens, the live cooking station and then the puddings (which weren't all that imo).

I think I might go back to try their lunch menu, but am in no hurry to return for the evening meal.  Nice set-up, great effort, but I'd prefer a tiny bit less selection but of better quality.

The Tudor Close - Worthing

Tudor Close Ferringham Lane, Worthing, West Sussex BN12 5NQ

20-05-2012

I've been here a couple of times with my grandmother and parents as a family meal because it serves traditional British food.  My grandmother loves it (probably because she likes unadventurous food), but the rest of us found the quality and taste to be rather average.

The Gun Inn - Worthing

High Street, Worthing, West Sussex BN14 0TA

20-05-2012

The Gun Inn is in Findon, not Worthing... and it also does fantastic food.

Actually, it's "amazingly fantastic food", so I could spend the rest of this review gushing about how perfectly cooked it was, how the portion sizes left you satisfied but not full and how the taste, freshness and choice was something special... or you could just go and try it for yourself.

Merry Monk - Lancing

1 North Road, Lancing, West Sussex BN15 9AH

Well, it's a pub and it serves beer.  But it also stinks of cigarette smoke inside and the furniture... well, just don't look at the armrests in the clear light of day.

Sorry, but no.
