Britannia Adelphi Hotel - Liverpool
Ranelagh Place, Liverpool, Merseyside L3 5UL

This is a great place to take family visitors, especially with children, or people who want a sort of “Brighton-lite” experience. Its pretty classic pub grub - king prawns, melon, fishcakes, nachos, chicken in all its ways, steak, grills and burgers. There’s a pretty good selection of this available in children-sized portions, clearly marked on the huge menus. They’re pushing salad, but I didn’t see many people eating it!
The vegetarian options aren’t very extensive - stuffed mushrooms, pasta in tomato sauce, and sweet potato curry, thats about it for main meals.
Good desserts, and several of them have chocolate in, which is the main thing after all.
The building and surround are large, definitely: there’s one big car park and two smaller ones; there are three areas to eat out in - well, in seasons other than this one, obviously - and there are even two sets of toilets its so big; one set has disabled access.
Its a friendly place, and its not going to break any fresh ground in the restaurant experience but it feels calm and for all its size it doesn’t feel huge, there are nicely sized rooms and various nooks and crannies. Very pleasant.

I used to really like this shop, until last year. It was the sort of place that was not much more than a pound shop, but it had more choice and more goods.
Now, however, its been taken over, or passed to a new generation within the same family of business owners, I’m not sure which - it does, at least, still feel like a family business.
But the price range has gone up, markedly so. It still sells wooden hangers, for instance - but now they’re £1.99 for two. Only two! They sell the size of bubble wrapped envelopes used to post CDs in the mail - but they’re £2 for 5. I was appalled, and found them 25% cheaper down the road - at Ryman’s, of all places, which tells you how expensive this place now is.
There are some more expensive home electronics type goods, but only someone who was trapped by ill-health and age to shop very locally would buy them. Not a recommended shop, sadly.
Mariposa China & Glassware - Brighton

This is a pretty unusual shop, long established in Brighton - it only sells elaborate china and giftware. Its extremely expensive - at the moment there's a sale of about 40% on, and even so presentation plates are £60, lampshade and stand £135 or so.
There are smaller things too: cocktail stick holders, fruit bowls, spoon rests, candleholders, ceramic fruit, serviette holders - lots and lots of things!
There are Venetian masks, which are extremely intricate, all unique and obviously beautifully made. But again, very expensive.
Its not a small shop, not really, but it feels tiny, they've managed to fit in a great deal of merchandise and created a very special look. It won't be to everyone's taste - its not to my taste - but I acknowledge that its a special place, with its own atmosphere, a real talking point in Brighton.
It does have its own website, at www.mariposamasks.com, they have a map and shopping facilities.
Recommended to browse, even if its not your cup of tea - it will be a great place to buy a gift.
Urbanite Great review Harmony - you know you can also add the website into the details of the place - just go to edit and paste it in the appropriate place for people to find it quicker :)

Oil & Vinegar - Brighton
40A North Street, Brighton BN1 1RH
31-01-2009
Oh dear. This would have got five stars if it was still open .... it was a great shop! Lots of different oils, lots of tasting opportunities, different sauces and combinations of herbs, some very fancy cooking and serving equipment (more for gifts than your own use, but very nice for all that). I've bought several stocking filler type presents here, as well as using their herb mix.
The website is still live, at www.oilvinegar.com, and I see that they're looking to open up again in Brighton this year or next. That makes sense, it does seem to be the type of place that they'd do well.
It was pricey, of course - small quantities, specialised products, but a really good talking point. When it opens up again, I'll go back.
Be Pink - Brighton

Website: www.be-pink.co.uk.
I laughed out loud with pleasure when I saw this shop - its in a part of the centre I don't usually go, so it was a surprise to learn it had been there for two years. Not absolutely everything in the shop is pink - there are zebra-striped wellies, for instance - but sooooo much is.
Calculators, clocks, bowls, keyboard and mouse, boxes, food, telephones, kids fancy dress outfits, really its everything you can think of. Prices are predictably high, but its such a niche shop, and such fun, who can blame them?
Their shop in Bromley apparently closed down recently, but this one seems to be doing fine, and you can buy from the website too.
carluccio's caffe - Brighton

This place is doing absolutely roaring trade, even mid-crunch. I was in there today, and while other places were absolutely empty, there was a queue of a dozen people waiting for tables - and its a fairly big place. Its popular with families, with couples and is a great place for singletons to take visitors, its pretty much unique, very Italian-feeling.
It’s a little bit north of average in price, but not too bad really, and the portions are good. I had butterbean soup - it was fresh and well seasoned.
Service is fairly fast, tho unexceptional.
There’s a shop attached, selling what I presume are many of the products used in the shop - everything from specialised pasta to sauces, e.g. both can be seasoned with cuttlefish ink. Biscuits, fruit, cakes, olives, sausages, takeaway food, all sorts of things, all of them absolutely delectable.
Daisy Chain - Lewes

This was extremely difficult to find, because it isn’t a full shop in its own right, its a corner of a shop called Revival, a wonderful second hand shop. As the blurb says, it sells decopatch, which I could summarise as beautifully decorate tissues for the surface of papier mache and even mdf products - ornaments, letters of the alphabet, Christmas decorations. Its a great idea, and I’ve never seen anything quite like the designs on the paper available.
They also sell paints for the same papier mache/mdf products, as well very individual cards. A fascinating corner of a fascinating shop.
Jobcentre Plus - Lewes
Mountfield Road, Medwyn House, Lewes, East Sussex BN7 2XR
29-01-2009
This is about five minutes walk from Lewes Railway Station, walking away from the centre of town. Mostly flat walking too, which is useful for crutches or wheelchairs. Its not actually on Mountfield Road, its down a little access road, on the very open, very pleasant ground floor of a purpose built building.
Its a Jobcentre *Plus*, which means it has a full range of services, including phones, a computer search system for jobs, help with benefits., all sorts of things.
The help is patchy, to be honest. I was experimenting with the computer search facility, and looking for “local jobs” - the computer came up with one in Chatham in Kent. From Lewes, in East Sussex? Thats not really local. And one computer terminal was out of order.
There are a series of phones in semi-private booths, which can be used to contact firms advertising job positions. That feels like you can be trusted, a pleasant feeling. I should say thats a normal feature of Jobcentre Plus.
What is local, of course, is the staff, and staff at this Jobcentre are very helpful, very friendly, and willing to interrupt what they’re doing to help you, which I’ve found without exception on a couple of visits.
