Snug Lounge Club - Nottingham

36 - 38 Houndsgate, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG1 7AB

23-11-2008

Small? Yes it certainly is, but then with a place like snug you can not say that the owners didnt give you a clue before you went in!

The place is in essence a very small club, complete with dancefloor and some small seating area upstairs near the small bar, but a larger area downstairs.

The music can vary depending on what night you go here and to be honest the last time I went I think I had one too many drinks to even recall what was being played - although I do have a hazy recollection of dancing so it must have seemed good at the time!

It is open late here and so it can often be saved as a last resort, once you have been kicked out at closing time from a nearby pub, but realise it is either too late to go to a main club or feel they will be charging too much then pop along to this place for a cheaper alternative and see how you go.

Old Market Square - Nottingham

Old Market Square, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG1 2DT

23-11-2008

There has been a considerable amount of effort and no doubt money spent on Nottingham Market Square over the last few years, but it appears to me that the results are pretty good and it definitely improves the looks of the city centre.

Although called Market square, this is a throw back to yester year and now the only market you are likely to see here is the German Market that comes once a year at Christmas time.

It is located right in the heart of the city and alongside the city hall. It often plays host to events during the course of the year and is used as a main pedestrian walk through.

Since it has been renovated there is now a large water feature and plenty of seating around the market square (plaza) that means in the summertime you can relax and enjoy a bite to eat as you watch people walk on by.

Eastwood Hall Conference Centre - Nottingham

Mansfield Road, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG16 3AQ

23-11-2008

Well this place is a hotel/conference centre in Nottinghamshire, Eastwood to be exact. But I guess you could have guessed that from the name!

It is a very nice place and is set in some fantastic grounds making it popular for wedding days aswell as corporate conferences.

On my last visit there it was in fact for a wedding and the place did the couple proud and provided us all with a perfect day to remember.

There are facilities here such as a gym and a snooker room with two tables. There is also the bar area with ample seating room, plus the grounds outside that you can go and explore.

There are several function rooms available within the hotel and the food we received during the wedding meal here was very good and if the rest of the food they serve in general here is as good then you are in for a treat.

The Malt Cross Music Hall - Nottingham

16 St James's Street, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG1 6FG

23-11-2008

This place is a great mixture of a bar and a place to grab a coffee with friends. So rather than heading to the main coffee bars of the city it is worth wakling up St James street and down to Malt Cross.

My favourite is without doubt the hot chocolate they serve complete with marsh mallow toppings! For once I am happy to give myself some indulgence and ignore the calorie counter.

As with any place you head with friends for a coffee and a catch up it is important not to feel rushed and almost as though you are sat in your lounge at home chatting away. This place manages to capture that feeling for me and provides a perfect location for a get together in the daytime.

Piccolino - Nottingham

7 Weekday Cross, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG1 2GB

23-11-2008

A smart city centre location restaurant serving good Italian inspired food in smart and modern surroundings.

I dined there today with a party of six and was initially impressed by the prompt attention paid by the front of house staff and the greeting they gave.

The table was placed in the window and although it was a round table it seemed fairly obvious to me that it would be a bit of a struggle for room once we filled it up with drinks and dishes - and so it proved. I would have thought this was fairly obvious to staff as more items were brought across to us, but they never took the opportunity to remove the items surplus to requirements on there, meaning we were left to shuffle glasses and plates around.

This small issue aside I am very positive about the overall experience I enjoyed. The choice of food was good and as they opened up many dishes to be taken as either a 'starter’ or 'main’ portion it meant there was a wide choice of dishes to try.

Starters were in the region of £5 and mains were generally around the £10 mark, slightly more if you went for the steak or fish dishes.

The furnishings were smart and it was pleasing atmosphere to sit in and enjoy a good well cooked meal with friends and family.

The Living Room - Nottingham

7 High Pavement, The Lace Market, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG1 1HF

23-11-2008

Location is good for this place as it sits nestled neatly between a couple of other higher end bars in town and also within easy reach of several good restaurants.

It is definitely smarter than most places in town and offers relaxed and comfortable surroundings and I have always found the atmosphere lively, jovial and relaxing.

Of course having such nice surroundings, including the grand piano in there, comes at a price somewhere and so don’t be shocked when it comes to paying the bar bill. Beer is reasonable compared to most, but think I let out an involuntary gasp when paying for some wine in there recently. But this place is not alone in charging over the odds for wine nowadays!

There have also been some reasonable acts on here when I have visited on a weekday evening. The last one I saw was a female singer accompanied by the piano player and she was brilliant enough to make me forget about the wine I had just paid for :-)

Weavers - Nottingham

I love this plac! You instantly get the feel of being like a kid in a candy shop again, quite literally, as you gaze up at the shelves stacked high with all types of weird and wonderful spirits from around the world.

There appears to be a great range on offer here, from the standard brands on sale in the supermarkets to the more rare and exotic brands available on a variety of different spirits and other drinks.

Dont worry either if you are not entirely sure what it is you should be looking for in here. If you like me you do not know what the difference between a good and bad whiskey is, just that you want to get a treat for your dad, then they are people here on hand to provide you with just that type of advice.

The shop as it is small gives that nice homely type of feel and the people working in there are very approachable and as I mentioned above are also very knowledgeable about their products and happy to offer some advice and guidance.

I will certainly be calling in here in the run up to Christmas and buying my brother some Bison vodka and maybe treating my dad to a posh whiskey that comes in its own wooden box!

The Test Match - Nottingham

Gordon Square, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG2 5LP

22-11-2008

This pub sets itself apart from the many others that have been popping up in West Bridgford recently. The newer bars have been aimed more at the trendy town set, but this pub clings on to the more traditional look.

In fact its appearance is great in terms of a building. If you look around you get the feeling of the 1930’s and art deco type architecture. From the revolving door entrance to the high ceilings and sweeping curves on the walls, this place has great looks to it.

The pub itself is a reasonable size and there is also a dedication to providing a few bitters to choose from for the people that drink here.

They provide food aswell and this is reasonably priced and decent enough whenever I have eaten here. There is also some parking outside, but this will be limited if you come during lunch time as West Bridgford can get very busy with people either shopping or on a break from the office.

Nursery Tavern - Sheffield

276 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S11 8PE

22-11-2008

The location of this place is good as it is right on Ecclesall Road in Sheffield, which means you have plenty of other bars and restaurants surrounding it, so you can make a night out of it on just this one road if you like.

There is a heavy student contingent here as there is loads of student terraced houses off the main road and so this is one of their locals. That just helps create a good busy atmosphere however and helps the pub remain busy and lively.

It is well set out inside and offers outdoor seating at the back and the front, which can be great to sit outside the front in the summer and watch the world pass by and people watch.

Prices are reasonable, heaven help a student inhabited pub that doesn’t price drinks well. Decoration is fine and there is the usual pub feel to this place making it well worth a visit with friends for a few drinks.

St Pancras International Station - Kings Cross

Pancras Road, Kings Cross, London N1C 4QL

22-11-2008

It is sometimes when you look up that you really see how beautiful some architecture is and here at St Pancras this is certainly true. Raise your head skywards and marvel at the metal struts spanning the ceiling and giving a great impression.

The station itself is well run and provides immediate access to the underground once you have arrived in London. There is also the eurostar service running out of there that can whisk you away to Paris or Brussels if you fancy going somewhere further afield.

There are several shops once you go down from the main platform and plenty of newsagents and places to grab a bite to eat and a coffee if you have time before your train.

I have visited London a few times recently and always come into St Pancras. One visit was to Covent Garden and the other to the Australian Embassy on the Aldwych. I was told to get taxis etc. but in the end I decided to walk it and glad I did as I got to both places in about 20/25 mins from the station.
