Hoxton Salon's Qype reviews

205 Old Street, London EC1V 9QN
Loathsome. The queues here are unbelievable - just avoid it. Lots of counter service points (did I really say that?) but hardly any ever open. The self service post machines kind of defeat the point as you need a member of staff to provide the date stamp. Free cash points on the front which is about the only plus. Probably the small post office on Hackney Road is a better option - the one in Hoxton Street is also incredibly busy.

Have eaten here for a big family lunch including grandparents (group of 12) using a toptable 50% discount offer which they are currently running till 7 July 2012. You have to order a starter and main course for each diner and in exchange it is half price. 24 dishes so we did a good sampling of the menu. I get the feeling that most diners are there on some sort of deal - its always busy whenever I wander by which is frequently. Despite the good reviews I think the food here is ordinary at best - bland and the batter fried dishes were frankly poor - takes a lot for the kids to turn their noses up at deep fried soft shell crab or squid - but they did. Curries too sweet, not enough heat. I wouldn't go back despite the cheapness - maybe its just me but i really cannot recommend a single Thai restaurant in Shoreditch and the includes Busaba Eathai and Yelo ...guess I must be fussy.....

73 City Road, London EC1Y 1BD
Busy pub that loves a footy match. I can think of a lot worse places to catch the odd game from the Euros...always busy lunchtime and evening - next to Old Street tube so easy escape for the office workers that fill it. Staff are friendly - food not exactly exciting but fine - same with the beer. A few tables dotted on the pavement amongst the smokers...its a busy road so not an ideal sun trap. Get your space early if you want to catch any England games!

Featherstone St, London EC1Y
On a tiny strip of land on the south side of Featherstone Street a maturing mix of leafy shrubs and shaded benches provide a tucked away stopping off point. I must admit I thought they were mad to install this a couple of years ago but it has survived and thrived. With the redevelopment of the Prior Weston school site which it backs on to I guess it has a questionable future but for now it is a welcome stopping off point on a fairly busy street

1 Vince Street Old Street, London EC1V 9HB
The first pub you encounter when leaving Old Street station heading towards Hoxton. They show a lot of football here and as a result is always pretty busy. If you are coming to Hoxton for the bars then walk on by - this is a cheap and cheerful locals boozer - they do Thai food and slush puppies - kind of says it all....

229 Old Street, The City, London EC1V 9HE
If you want to avoid the queues for topping up your oyster at Old Street station then this is the store to pick. Tiny booze and fags store with some household items. Nothing exciting but handy location.

Wesley's Chapel & Leysian Centre
This has been a regular stop off point every Wednesday for the best part of 10 years for various daughters attending brownies and guides. The building is tucked off city road - it houses the museum of Methodism, a chapel and John Wesley's rather stunning Georgian town house. Across the road from Bunhill cemetery worth combining if you are visiting - followed by coffee at Ozone Roasters up the road. Various groups use the hall - rainbows, brownies and then guides run from 6 if you have daughters looking for a nre interest...the summer camps are great!

So you are stood on City Road waiting for somewhere to grab a coffee and all of a sudden 2 come along at once…new kid on the block Salvation Jane opened last Tuesday. The antipodean takeover continues – this is Aussie run – super friendly team with great welcome and service. Modern space with urban feel – bare breeze block as opposed to brickwork – glass frontage with loads of light. The cakes are to die for and once the kids spy this I can see myself being shunted in to grab cakes to go whenever we stroll by. Need to work through the coffee menu to give a proper review. Flat white lacked depth but these are early days…..I will be back

Have friends who live close by so pop in every couple of months. Not unpleasant boozer with that shabby chic style. Decent beer and wine range. Highlight is the beer garden which is packed in summer – great outside space all year round. Happy to keep popping in every now and then but not a destination pub that I would go out of my way to visit.
