Texaco - Islington

Combined Texaco garage and Co-operative food store - next to Cally pool so I pop in here a couple of times a week for post swim snacks and top up shopping. It's pretty small - there is a larger Co-operative food store 5 minutes walk further up Caledonian Road. This is fine for grabbing milk and bread....pretty well staffed - the queues move quick

Post Office - Old Street

205 Old Street, London EC1V 9QN

Loathsome. The queues here are unbelievable - just avoid it. Lots of counter service points (did I really say that?) but hardly any ever open. The self service post machines kind of defeat the point as you need a member of staff to provide the date stamp. Free cash points on the front which is about the only plus. Probably the small post office on Hackney Road is a better option - the one in Hoxton Street is also incredibly busy.

Thai Thai - Old Street

110 Old Street, London EC1V 9BD

Have eaten here for a big family lunch including grandparents (group of 12) using a toptable 50% discount offer which they are currently running till 7 July 2012. You have to order a starter and main course for each diner and in exchange it is half price. 24 dishes so we did a good sampling of the menu. I get the feeling that most diners are there on some sort of deal - its always busy whenever I wander by which is frequently. Despite the good reviews I think the food here is ordinary at best - bland and the batter fried dishes were frankly poor - takes a lot for the kids to turn their noses up at deep fried soft shell crab or squid - but they did. Curries too sweet, not enough heat. I wouldn't go back despite the cheapness - maybe its just me but i really cannot recommend a single Thai restaurant in Shoreditch and the includes Busaba Eathai and Yelo ...guess I must be fussy.....

Dragon bar moved to a bigger space off Shoreditch High Street a couple of years ago....the new improved bigger version can be found here

Cineworld Enfield - Enfield

Southbury Leisure Park, London EN1 1YQ

14-06-2012

This cinema complex is right next to Southbury Road Leisure Centre. I spend a few weekends a year at the pool for the Middlesex County Swimming Championships with our kids. Warm up starts at 8.15 in the morning and often the days races don't end till after 5 and the way events are spaced out we often have time to kill. And one of the ways we do that is catching a movie at this multiplex next door. Its spacious, with comfy seats and great legroom, loads of screens so we always find something that suits us. Like most cinemas the staff are not exactly helpful but no doubt they are not paid a great deal so shouldn't really expect too much. Its busy and can get scruffy with pretty iffy toilets. If I lived close I guess we would use it but for now it helps while away a couple of hours waiting for our next event......

Waitrose - Moorgate

Cherry Tree Walk, Old Street, London EC1Y 8NX

This supermarket has evolved from Safeway to Morrisons to Somerfield to Waitrose over the last 15 years - I have used all the flavours at some point and this is by far the tastiest. There is something about the way the John Lewis Group run their business that really brings out the best in their staff. A number here have remained through the changes and have grown to be helpful and courteous - it really is a pleasure to shop here. Its larger than the St John's Street branch and better stocked though I still prefer the Holloway branch as it has a much better butcher and fish counter. The Barbican branch is walking distance for mewhich has aa big appeal and if you time it right you can pick up lunch from the rather fabulous Whitecross Street Food market and coffee from Fix

The Angel - Old Street

73 City Road, London EC1Y 1BD

14-06-2012

Busy pub that loves a footy match.  I can think of a lot worse places to catch the odd game from the Euros...always busy lunchtime and evening - next to Old Street tube so easy escape for the office workers that fill it. Staff are friendly - food not exactly exciting but fine - same with the beer. A few tables dotted on the pavement amongst the smokers...its a busy road so not an ideal sun trap. Get your space early if you want to catch any England games!

Featherstone Street Benches - Old Street

Featherstone St, London EC1Y

On a tiny strip of land on the south side of Featherstone Street a maturing mix of leafy shrubs and shaded benches provide a tucked away stopping off point. I must admit I thought they were mad to install this a couple of years ago but it has survived and thrived. With the redevelopment of the Prior Weston school site which it backs on to I guess it has a questionable future but for now it is a welcome stopping off point on a fairly busy street

Fortune Street Park - Moorgate

This is a busy playground and green space tucked behind Whitecross Street. A good place for devouring your spoils from the street market. It's busy and rightfully so - largish playground for mixed ages with an interesting and unusual range of play equipment. The kids always loved it here when they were little.....I love the sign reminding adults that kids have priority for the play equipment - written for me I guess.

Quaker Gardens - Moorgate

When the kids were little the standard deal whenever we were going shopping was we would grab sometime in a park/playground after. So this little playground is close to Waitrose Barbican branch on Whitecross Street. Back then it was a rather scruffy Safeway. Anyway a few years ago the park had new kit installed along with a hard surface football/basketball pitch and a nature area. Good swings - I still love the swings being a big kid at heart and often quiet. I still cut through here and take a seat on their benches with a coffee ever now and then - no kids in tow any more though. Quieter than Fortune Park which is the other option near Waitrose.
