Actually quite good for Stapleford. Still some edges to be smoothed but surprising considering the area. Good food, ok building.
Werribee Open Range Zoo - Melbourne
K Rd, Werribee, 3030 Melbourne
08-01-2009
A good open range zoo. Often very busy in school holidays and a little crowded. But the areas are well thought out and the animals presented sympathetically in well designed settings. The bus rides as part of the ticket are a real scrum when it is busy and the frustration of a busy bus (with a quiet guide) can often spoil what should be a really good experience getting up close to the giraffes, rhinos and zebras.
Don’t pay the extortionate prices for 'special’ tours. You could fly to Africa for the same price as a family ticket for one of these.
A good day but I’d advice taking your own food to save queuing and paying high prices for average fare.
But this is certainly a place on the up. The guides are very helpful, friendly and seem to be everywhere you need them and the new wild dog area is excellent.
Queen Victoria Market - Melbourne
Corner Elizabeth and Victoria Streets, 3000 Melbourne
08-01-2009
Avoid the tourist tat that seems to attract people from every corner of the earth to be sorely disappointed by this 'highlight’ in Melbourne. Give it a miss and ignore the guidebooks. Unless… you want cracking fresh food. If you’re a foodie and you can cook then go. If you’re a visitor/tourist, go do something more interesting. The zoo or the gaol.
Scala Cinema - Ilkeston
Market Pl, Ilkeston, Derbyshire DE7 5QB

Not bad but seriously out of date. But as a local alternative to those packed, characterless, out-of-town multiscreens this is not so bad. Just wish they were a bit more adventurous with the films they show (but then who in Ilkeston would go see them?).
Erewash Museum - Ilkeston
High Street, Ilkeston, Derbyshire DE7 5JA
08-01-2009
For a small museum tucked away from the main street this is not a bad little place for an hour or so. The best thing they do is summer activities in conjunction with the council. Depressingly underused and I’d recommend this place and the activities as we’ll lose it otherwise. And that would be a shame.
I wouldn’t advise travelling far for this museum but if you’re near the it’s certainly worth a punt.
McDonald's Restaurants - Ilkeston
Unit 1-3 Albion Centre, Bath Street, Ilkeston, Derbyshire DE7 8AG

Crowded, messy, slow service with long queues developing at busy times. Absolutely nothing to recommend this Maccers at all. A bad example and best avoided. Although not a lot of alternatives in I’lson. Maybe go up the hill to the bakery?
McDonald's Restaurants - Chaddesden
Unit 10 Wyvern Way, Derby, Derbyshire DE21 6NZ
08-01-2009
Just dreadful. Never do they have food ready (as in 'fast’ food) and the tables are always sticky with some substance otherwise unknown outside of 'restaurants’ with synthetic tables.
We sometimes pop into Maccers as it is conveniently placed by the A52 at the Wyvern, but always reminds us why we don’t go more often. Poor reproduction of mass produced food - how hard can it be?
Waterstones Booksellers - Derby
78-80 St Peters Street, Derby, Derbyshire DE1 1SR
08-01-2009
I’m not a huge fan of Waterstones but I do like the buildings they often reinvigorate. Derby’s store is a good example of this. I still struggle with the lack of range in Waterstones and will probably continue to use the internet for purchases of books I know I want. But for a good browse the Waterstones in Derby and Nottingham offer good environments - if always a little understaffed.
Bardills Garden Centre - Stapleford
Toton Lane, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG9 7JB
08-01-2009
The cafe is overpriced and typical garden centre stuff really. Plenty of better places around for coffee and cakes. Often very busy with 'slow moving’ patrons and often with new your school-age trainees trying to be helpful.
Nice enough but much better places within a few minutes drive. As you have to drive to get to Bardills then this is no problem.
Can’t argue with the plants - nice and green. Lots of variety but priced in accordance with the fact that its full of people willing to pay good money for their gardens.
