Sky Top Guest House - Pattaya

Moo 9 370/13, Pattaya 2nd Rd., Nongprue, Banglamung, 20260 Pattaya

17-08-2010

Given the price, the location is superb for this place. I was welcomed by a friendly face and shown to my room which was very spacious. It included a very comfy bed, aircon, desk, network socket (cable provided), kitchenette, TV, DVD player and en suite bathroom.

It's hardly the Ritz, but it was very comfortable and only a stones-throw from the infamous Soi if such is your thing. I was actually there for the diving and the dive shop I'd booked through was on that road!

HQ Hostel - Bangkok

Silom Soi 3 5/3-4, Silom Road, Bangrak, Bangkok

17-08-2010

This isn't the cheapest hostel in Bangkok, but for what you pay it's excellent value. A short walk gets you to Pat Pong for the pubs, clubs and other ahem entertainment as well as the night market.

There are loads of places to eat and shop nearby and it's barely five minutes walk to the MRT or BTS.

Staff are very helpful and the rooms are spotless. Each dorm bed has a comfy quilt and the rooms are air conditioned. Bathrooms are also clean and have probably the best showers I've ever used in a hostel.

Wifi is available and free, or there are two PCs in the lounge area - which also includes TV, DVD and Playstation with a collection of games and books.

Cineworld - Glasgow

The Forge Centre 1221 Gallowgate, Glasgow, Scotland G31 4EB

17-08-2010

I used this cinema for convenience as it has free parking outside unlike Renfrew Street's branch. It's definitely not as nice as the city centre branch, feeling very old inside. Some of the screens are tiny.

In addition, the staff will not let you forward load your Unlimited card with tickets - you can only get a second ticket after the first film you're going to see has finished. In with the rules, but annoying if the queue is long and the gap between the films is short.

SF Cinema MBK Center - Bangkok

Phayathai Rd 444, Patumwan, Bangkok

17-08-2010

Very confusing to get around for the first-timer, especially when you have to leave via the front of the screen after the film. Other than that, up to the usual high Bangkok standard and showing most recent releases including Digital and 3D.

Paragon Cineplex - Bangkok

Rams1 Phathumwan 989, Phathumwan, 10330 Bangkok

17-08-2010

My preferred cinema when I'm in Bangkok. Large screens, efficient staff, cheap prices (by European standards), good quality seating.

Also includes a handful of luxury seats of various descriptions and an IMAX screen.

Sits on the top floor of the luxury Paragon shopping centre, so the lifts can get a little busy last thing at night as many films let out at once.

Cineworld Glasgow Parkhead - Glasgow

Cineworld Glasgow Renfrew Street - Glasgow

7 Renfrew Street, Glasgow, Scotland G2 3AB

A great cinema and was my local for several months when I lived in Glasgow. In Scotland, only two Cineworlds show pretty much every film that comes out - not just blockbusters. This is one, Edinburgh the other. As such, it is far better value than most other branches if you have the Unlimited card.

Another thing is that the staff will let you "forward load" with tickets if you have the card. That is, you can arrive at 10am and use it to get tickets for films starting at, say, 10:30, 12:45, 14:50, 18:30 and 21:00 as long as they don't clash with one another. This is actually against the card rules, but makes organising your day so much easier!

sportsman bar - Musselburgh

58 High Street, Musselburgh, Scotland EH21 7AG

Very quiet the night I went in, but the staff kept the sound on the TV for the footie and did the pub quiz by going table to table to read the questions!

The quiz is every Monday and £1 per head to enter. Prize is usually a bottle of spirits with a rolling cash prize for a tricky 5-question bonus round.

Made to feel very welcome, good prices (£2.50 for a bottle of Newcastle Brown) and I think I'v found me a local!

Barbecue Hut - Paisley

60 Causeyside Street, Paisley, Scotland PA1 1YW

01-01-2010

I'm actually sat here typing this up with a few of their spicy pakora sat next to me! My uncle fitted the new lights in the place last week and the owner, Mustapha, is a neighbour so I may sound biased!

The food is genuinely great. Mustapha's one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. Not only does he work hard and run a good business, he's a great supporter of the local community. Many of the kids' schools in the area will be supplied with free grub from BBQ Hut if they have fetes and the like.

I'm not a "local" but know quite a few people in the area and this is simply the place to go when you have the munchies at kicking out time. It's not just the fact that they're the only place open, but that they serve awesome food as well!

Noble Comb - Shipley

Salts Mill Road, Quayside, Shipley, West Yorkshire BD18 3ST

For what you pay I don't think you can beat places like this. Given the price, the portion sizes are very generous and the food's always well cooked.

As almost everything on the menu is Two For One (cheapest meal free), you get the best deals if you visit in an even-numbered group! Or are particularly hungry/greedy.

The menu's varied enough that you should be able to find a few things to choose between. Also advertised at the till was a rump steak, chips and peas at only £2.95.

Service was pretty quick for a busy Friday night, waiter was attentive and the food hot when we got it.

Simple, good portions, friendly, pleasant enough atmosphere - and cheap. Does what it says on the tin.
