Gagosian Gallery - London

4-24 Britannia Street, London WC1X 9JD

01-07-2008 (updated on 06-02-2009)

Today was my first visit to the Gagosian Gallery and I have to say what a great find it is! It really reminds me of the massive gallery spaces that you find in the Chelsea district of New York.

Its a little stranded in terms of art so you have to make a special trip to it. That said, the Tom Friedman show that is currently on was a real treat and brilliantly displayed. Its a clinical space without feeling daunting like some of the more corporate spaces in soho.

I will definitely go again!

Housmans Bookshop - Kings Cross

Caledonian Road, London N1 9DX

01-07-2008

Love it! They stock loads of great contemporary fiction, political books and anarchists pamphlets. Nestled just around the corner from the station it would be criminal not to pay it a visit if you're in the area.

A truly great independent bookstore!

sounds around - Brockley

brockley road, Brockley, London SE4 2RR

You need this shop in your life! It sells everything. It sells sewing kits, it sells reams of paper, it sells ornaments, it sells childrens toys, it sells stationary, it sells birthday cards, it sells…. you get the idea. Im sure if you went in asking for an Uzi 9mm and a packet of explosives, the helpful lady would just pop out back and get them for you.

It also rents DVDs cheaply. In fact so cheaply its suspicious… the latest titles as well.

et cetera gallery - Hackney

1a Darnley Road, Hackney, London E9 6QH

01-07-2008

This is a great little gallery in the middle of Hackney that puts on a variety of shows from up and coming artists. Its a great space with an outside patio area that is ideal for the private view night.

Its cheap to hire for a week if you are interested in doing so and the gallery manager is extremely helpful.

I think the opening hours are 10 - 4 on weekdays…but i suggest you doublecheck that first (!)

Templar Any idea of prices for hire?

JGREEN £250 for a week, I think… and they only take 25% of anything sold which is unheard of. (It might be that these are subject to change but thats the deal we got quite recently)

Hilly Fields - Lewisham

Brockley, London SE4 1LR

28-05-2008

I love this place in the summer. A haven of greenery nestling on the edge of the urban hives of New Cross and Lewisham. A playground and swings for the kids if you have them, and a set of tennis courts should you feel the urge. There are great views of Canary Wharf on a clear day and an amble around the small stone circle is a must. I prefer to just lie back and read in the sun though.

I wouldn’t travel miles to see it but if you’re in the area I’d recommend a visit on a sunny day.

Oxfam - Dalston

514-518 Kingsland Road, London E8 4AR

23-04-2008

Amazing charity shop. Last summer i managed to pick up copies of Stewart Home and a Kathy Acker for about £1.50 each. They were playing great music in there, which makes sense as their cheap CD’s and Vinyl are regularly filled with cheap gems. This is the hive of Dalston trend, bric-a-brac, culture and randomness. Delve in!

cafe tropical - Clapham

81 St John's Road, London SW11 1QY

23-04-2008

This is a nice little, independently owned cafe that has recently been refurbished… probably to compete with the Costa that has just opened over the road. They offer some great toasted paninis, jacket potatoes, and other hearty grub for lunchtimes and serve a variety of coffees to kickstart your day on the way to the Junction.

Music and Video Exchange - Greenwich

23 Greenwich Church Street, Greenwich, London SE10 9BJ

23-04-2008

Part of a decent chain that have a few branches around London and the UK dealing in second hand music. Records, CD’s, DVD’s all at prices cheaper than your usual music outlet… and get this, when something doesn’t sell they lower its price. It’s true. This means you can play cat and mouse with them for weeks until that Sonic Youth LP you’ve been yearning for is about £3. That is of course provided noone else gets there first.

The Rose and Crown - Clapham

2 the polygon, Clapham, London SW4 0JG

22-04-2008

This is a great pub lurking in the backstreets of Clapham. Its got a beergarden at the front and the back for the summer evenings. Staff are friendly, food is a fair price and they have a good range of ales on tap behind the bar.

They used to do really good acoustic music events upstairs…maybe they still do.

Bardens Boudoir - Stoke Newington

38-44 Stoke Newington Road, Dalston, London N16 7XJ

22-04-2008

Nestling in the middle of Dalston, this is a killer venue regularly used by Indie/ Rock Promoters such as Eat Your Own Ears, Upset the Rhythm and Club Motherf*cker. No surprise then that its filled with young trendy types dressed in skinny jeans and tight T-shirts pulsing around to dirty rock anthems and swathes of disco. Your favourite new venue. Fact.
