Orce Nikolov - Ohrid

Ohrid, Macedonia, Slavia Hotels Compound , 96000 Ohrid

27-04-2010

Nice Seaside Hotel.
Mostly.

On the oher hand, it's also draughty, cold, clammy, charming like any eastern-block commissar could ever be.

Have you ever been to Molvania? It's kind of similar to this place, only here, they serve ice-cold Скопско.
Which kind of makes up for any and all negative points you could think of.

Until the next morning, that is.

However, the next supermarket starts business early in the morning, so it's Скопско again!

Zorb - Rotorua

Cnr Western Rd & State H'way 5, Ngongotaha, Rotorua, 3040 Rotorua

If you don't know what "zorbing" is, you simply have to try it.

Who'd have known that being put into a giant inflatable rubber ball, getting pushed down a hill and bouncing around inside said ball, slithering around in half-a-bucket of water (warm or cold, your choice.) could be such jolly good fun.

Gastwirtsch. Eißner - Ebsdorfergrund

Roßberger Str. 16, 35085 Ebsdorfergrund

05-06-2009

A great place to visit!

Typical German meals at great value prices. Family friendly, outdoor seating, lovely surroundings and local beers on tap.

Tip: try the cheese-schnitzel

Marktplatz - Marburg

Markt, Marburg

04-06-2009

One of the three sites of the traditional market in town (the other two beind in the südviertel and behind the Elisabeth church)

Every Wednesday and Saturday you’ll get a chance to buy fruit, flowers, groceries, cheese, meat, honey, eggs and lost more directly from the grower. Large selection of organic foods.

Sanetra Paul & Sohn KG - Marburg

Gutenbergstr. 3, 35037 Marburg

04-06-2009

The cakes and sweet rolls are definitely nice (do try the strawberry cake), but the brötchen and breads are rather bland compared to what the other bakeries in town offer.

Comics, Kitsch u. Kunst - Marburg

Barfüßerstr. 51, 35037 Marburg

04-06-2009

Good place to get your comic fix - most regular (German) stuff is available, what they don’t have right there they’ll order for you. Genuinely helpful staff that can tell you the name and publisher of even the most obscure series

“I’m looking for a comic book with this guy in it. He’s got his friend with him and he carries a gun. Or maybe it was a sword. Or he was a girl, I don’t know anymore. But the cover was blue.” - They’ll be able to help.

Game It Spielwaren - Marburg

Biegenstrasse 37, 35037 Marburg

04-06-2009

If you’re into any sort of games, be it roleplaying, larping, board games, collectible card games or tabletop - this is the place for you.

From Warhammer to Magic, they’ve quite a good range of everything on the shelves. Add to this a healthy selection of paints and tools, dice and fantasy novels, D&D rulebooks and Pokemon cards.

A place to make any gamer feel at home.

Thessaloniki - Marburg

Zeppelinstr. 1, 35039 Marburg

04-06-2009

While this place may be a bit to walk from the centre of town, it’s definitely worth the visit.

Nice outoor seating, friendly service, good value meals - all you could ask for.
Word of warning though: if you’re into low-fat, low-carb food, this isn’t the place for you. You could try the Greek Salad, but the nice smell of fried goodness that’s in the air would just be making you envious…

Hugo's - Marburg

Gerhard-Jahn-Platz 21, 35037 Marburg

04-06-2009

Can’t see what the hype over this place is all about. It’s definitely on the pricey side of town, trying (with varying success) to act posh and lounge-ish (whiskeys and cigars anyone?), but usually just coming across as pretentious.

Staff varies from 'annoyingly incompetent’ to 'friendly and helpful’, so you’ve at least a fair chance to actually get what you ordered.
Eventually.
But be prepared to remind them.

Best thing about the place is the location itself. Nice outside seating just beside the river, some trees and parasols making for a charming outdoor atmosphere.

It’s a pity really. They’ve a number of nice service ideas (outdoor blankets in spring, free wifi, deck-chairs outside etc.), all more or less undone by staff that’s so bad it can get actually entertaining sometimes.

Cafe am Grün - Marburg

Am Grün 28, 35037 Marburg

03-06-2009

A genuinely typical Marburg café, reflecting the traditionally strong left-ish tradition of the town.

They servine coffee, tee and juices in all varieties, there’s a selection of nice cakes on offer (usually) and they also have some hot meals on the menu.

But the main reason to come here (for me at least) is the breakfast. A grand selection of everything you could possibly think of, places to sit outdoors just beside the river and an unrivalled friendly atmosphere make this a definitely must-visit, even on the I’ve-just-got-one-day-in-town list.
