This lovely steel cantilever bridge spans Loch Etive at its narrowest point, six miles north-east of Oban on the west coast. It has a span of 150m (500 ft) and height of 15m (50 ft).
It was originally built to carry the Callander and Oban Railway’s branch line to Ballachulish which opened in 1903. In 1914, a road was added next to the railway track, then, in 1966, the bridge was converted for the sole use of road vehicles and pedestrians.
The steel arches at both ends of the bridge had to be raised after being hit by vehicles which were too tall. The present height limit for vehicles is 4.2m (13.8 ft).
The rapids here are really amazing to watch during the ebbing tide. The seawater in the loch streams out through narrows and over a rocky shelf creating strong currents and waves. I’ve never seen anything like it before and found it quite mesmerising!

16 miles south of Oban, this remote and beautiful sea loch is well worth a visit.
It’s a wonderful place for hill walking and cycling. There are peaceful beaches to stroll along too and a few restaurants, hotels and pubs not far away.
This is an area of stunning natural beauty, teeming with wildlife – sometimes you’ll see otters, seals and porpoises swimming in the loch. Perfect for birdwatching too.
There are wonderful views from the top of the surrounding hills over the Sound of Jura and many small islands. Highly recommended!
From Oban you’ll need the A816 south to Kilmelford. Then turn right to Degnish for nearly 2 miles. there are signs for Melfort Pier and Harbour.
Jane_Elizabeth Thanks Roger! Will be back in Scotland in 10 days time but only for 3 – hope to have a few new places to Qype though!

We used this car park recently before realising that some of the other car parks in the town are totally free! This one costs £2.50 for up to 3 hours or up to 12 for £5 (no concessions for disabled blue badge holders). On the plus side it's within easy walking distance of the town centre and harbour and it's at street level so no stairs, accessible to all. The man who was taking the money was friendly and gave us helpful directions to some places we were looking for.

Definitely the cafe with the best view in Oban! Situated right in the main shopping street, overlooking the water. There's a flight of stairs up to the cafe but there is a lift available. It was just under new ownership when we called in there two weeks ago and the staff seemed very pleasant. There are lots of snacks and light meals available, including some vegetarian choices; good coffees too.
Examples from menu that day: soup of the day (£2.95); toasties, panini, baked potatoes, hot filled rolls (£1.80), big breakfast (5.95). Breakfasts are served until 11.30am. Lovely home baking as well and a lovely fire to sit beside!

A pretty good, and large, clothes shop for all the family with lots to choose from, from underwear to casual and smart wear, coats, hats, scarves and other accessories. There are quite a lot of bargains and reductions as well so it's always worth a look! It's near the station and the ferry, so handy to have a browse round while you're waiting for some transport! Nice friendly staff too.
MELAM Hi Jane
I found one or these while in Surrey and liked it but there are not any in my area I dont think. Did you sample any whiskey while in Oban ?

Jane_Elizabeth There's quite a few of these shops around Scotland. I bought a lovely winter scarf in there which was half price so I was very pleased! Unfortunately I always seem to be driving so I can never drink anything other than coffee!!

A small branch of this lovely shop but plenty to choose from nevertheless! Chocolate of many kinds, milk and plain, with all kinds of yummy fillings. There are gift boxes small and large, small bags of chocs and racks of chocolate bars too. The assistant in there was very helpful and friendly. It's in the main shopping street so easy to find!

A gorgeous shop full of beautiful clothes (for men and women), including smart and casual wear, scarves, hats and coats, and also accessories, Scottish souvenirs and other good quality gifts. Very nice soaps too and even postcards. Plenty to look at and very tempting to buy! Friendly and helpful staff as well.

A really nice branch of 'Smiths' in the main shopping street, with all the things you'd expect to find (magazines, newspapers, greetings cards, stationery, confectionery etc) and a particularly good book department. There is a superb range of Scottish books (which I have not come across in all branches of the store north of the border), and a full supply of maps as well. The staff seemed very pleasant.

Well worth the climb from the town, though it's very steep so you can also take the car - there's a free car park right next to the tower, then there is just a short flight of steps with a handrail. There are many beautiful flowering plants around the lawns inside the folly, including scented roses. Wonderful views down over the harbour and beyond, and many places to sit down too, before you start your descent!

A large caravan park 2-3 miles from Oban set in the countryside, looking across to the island of Kerrera. We’ve only stayed here once but enjoyed it very much. It’s well looked after and the owner was friendly and helpful. There’s a shop, laundry room and other facilities too. See the website for lots of photos.

Jane_Elizabeth Thanks Roger! xx
