Wasabi Sushi - Manchester
63 Faulkner Street, Manchester, Greater Manchester M1 4FF
19-05-2012
Wasabi itself is pretty small, it has a large conveyer belt (which you are seated around) in which the sushi is displayed and you are free to pick off what you like, after you've ordered with the waiter. It is close quarter seating (you can quite easily brush elbows with your neighbour) and big groups are not really a good idea here, the same for small children, there is just no room for prams or child seating.
The staff are nearly always friendly and the manager (at least I think he is) is always very friendly and chatty once you've been a few times, which is welcoming.
It's a noisy place too, so if you don't like loud music it may not be for you. They tend to play only Korean pop music videos on the TV and while I don't mind being a fan of this music I do find it a little puzzling as it's a Japanese place, so surely Japanese music would fit better? But it doesn't bother me, just get a lot of people talking about the Japanese pop music video, when actually it's Korean xD
Now, onto my main reason for loving this place, the dessert room upstairs. It is awesome! I love this place! The bubble tea is the best I have ever come across, and I've tried my fair share. This bubble tea is fresh and does not taste of fake flavours or syrupy sugar. The extra lychee pearls (juice filled bubbles) are just fantastic. The desserts on offer range from pandan waffles (freshly made to order) with a variety of ice cream and fruit, snow ice (different flavoured shaved ice with fruit and sauce), melting chocolate puddings, filled crepes to the more traditional Chinese desserts of red bean soup, ginger soup, bean curd etc
They also have pretty little mousse style cakes in a cabinet which you can order or take-away as you wish.
The American Bar & Grill - Altrincham

This place is a real little gem, or large gem as it seats up to 70 people. The place has a great feel, spacious seating and nice Americana decor. The bar area could be right out of a real American Diner, and the cocktails looked fun.
We arrived at about 10:45am for the breakfast/brunch menu. The choice was great: full English, American style, eggs benedict, stack of pancakes etc
The coffee list was also great and included a bottomless black coffee.
We decided to go for one English, one American and a stack of pancakes. It was all fresh, the pancakes were super fluffy and home-made. I could have eaten them until I burst.
The lunch and dinner menu was huge and included all the usual American/Mexican fare: burgers, nachos, chilli, steaks etc but from the looks of it, everything is home-made, where possible and the meat used of a high quality, or so the menu says.
I will be coming back for breakfast again and to also try the main menu at a later point.
They miss a star because although the staff were nice they weren't really friendly and it made it a bit uncomfortable. Also we waited for 20 minutes for our bill, finally went up to pay and were told they would come to us, waited another 10 minutes before finally paying. Hopefully that was just a one off.

I was just expecting a lot more. May give ita nother go in the future and re-review but not impressed over-all.
By the time we left all the tables were once again taken, some had the same people still there half an hour later. I'm all for having a long coffee, but sitting at a 4 seater table with a glass of water while you jot in your diary seemed a bit off if any other customers wanted a seat, but that wasn't the staffs fault I guess, just thought I'd mention it as if we'd arrived and there had been no tables because of that I'd have been put off from the start.
Hey Little Cupcake - Manchester
2 Hardman Street, Spinningfields, Manchester, Greater Manchester M3 3HF

(updated on 23-04-2012)
I like my cupcakes and I have tried them from Scotland to London and found nice ones, nasty ones and okay ones.
I recently heard about ‘Hey Little Cupcake’ and on Saturday I decided to go and see what they were like, having seen the yummy promises on their website. It was raining when I entered the tiny shop next to Nando’s and all three of the tiny tables were taken up by people talking, eating and drinking, although it did appear a few tables had long since finished but had decided to not move for any new customers who may wish to sit.
This didn’t bother me, I just thought I’d enjoy my cupcakes just as well at home. I went up to the counter, where two women stood, one was in heavy conversation with a lady about an order for cakes while the younger woman behind the counter… messed about is the only thing I can think of it describe it, she knew I was waiting but seemed intent on ignoring me. I stood patiently waiting before finally unable to avoid my smiles and eye contact anymore she came to the counter. No smile was offered, no ‘how can I help you’, ‘what would you like’… nothing just a stare. I picked from the cakes on display, two chocolate, one red velvet and a New Yorker (coffee). She packaged them up and I paid the frankly overpriced amount of £2.00 per cake, (glad I didn’t stay in as the price is bumped up even more!) normally a good price for a cupcake is £1.00 (a steal) but I’m used to paying £1.50 to £1.70 max, only in the London high endend ‘Hummingbird Cupcakes have I paid £2.00 before. Shocked but foolishly thinking the price would reflect the quality I took my cakes (again no smile or bye offered) and went home. I shared out my cakes with friends 2 hours later and… I have NEVER tasted a worse cupcake, ever! I’m shocked!
The chocolate: Cake very, very dry, only a hint of chocolate taste, icing crunchy (ew!) and bland again a hint of milk chocolate, no rich yummy flavor here!
Red Velvet: Bland and a little fake tasting with dry cake. Crunchy icing that had a hint of creamy falvour but barely a hint!
New Yorker: Cake dry as a bone, sucked my tongue dry! Tiny coffee taste, icing crunchy, sickly and a little coffee like.
How on earth can they charge this much for cake so poor? None of my friends or I could get through more than a few mouth fulls of any of the cake. The crunchy frosting (unblended perhaps or not enough care taken when made?) was disgusting and made us all feel sick.
EDIT: Had to amend my review because I was reported, by whom I wonder? I find it quite funny that suddenly Hey Little Cupcake has pictures and more info and for some reason a lot of reviews from people with only 1 review all in a very short time frame.
Let your business speak for itself Hey Little Cupcake! Nothing more off putting than plugging your own stuff secretly when you get bad reviews! Change your cupcakes and make them good then the REAL reviews will speak for themselves!
Yo Sushi - Manchester
The Trafford Centre, The Dome, Manchester, Greater Manchester M17 8DA

Meh, Yo Sushi is ok. I admit I have never eaten in, it feels too close and enclosed, plus the whole being in a warm shop puts me off as well as the warm fish smell this place seems to develop over the course of the day. But I have gotten take out a fair few times.
The sushi is ok here, the hot food is ok here, it’s just basically ok. It’s not super yummy, fantastic quality. The fish is not always melt in the mouth fresh, the chicken is normally never breast meat, the potions on hot food is measly… it’s just ok, if you are stuck for sushi or a quick bite.
It’s just not great sushi or a great place in general, as I keep saying it’s just ok. The prices are on the high side and the prices for desserts is high way robbery! How much for two mochi I could buy 6 of in China Town??!!
I would say not the best place for a sushi virgin, but a place to fill the hole of sushi craving if you can’t get anywhere better.

When I heard that a Japanese and Korean restaurant was opening in the Trafford Centre I was both excited and hopeful. The Trafford Centre is not a place known for it’s great food, and although there are some decent places to eat, most of it is a huge miss when it comes to quality.
I rushed over to try this place out as soon as it had opened…. what a huge let down. The place feels and looks like it is still part of Yang Sing, I assume it also has the same chefs and the only difference is that it claims to serve Japanese and Korean food.
The menu’s have a decent selection but it’s also no where near authentic Korean or Japanese, it’s fusion, toned down and mixed with Chinese.
We shared a veg jeon (pancake) which was the oddest jeon I have ever tasted! Paper thin, no real taste, couldn’t taste the kimchi in it at all! Tasted like an onion pancake. It was also slightly burnt. No dipping sauce given with this dish either, which is very strange.
I had the chicken katsu and honestly…. no panko breadcrumbs, big no no! No curry sauce at all, the dish was very dry. Soy sauce in the rice which (would have been unwelcome with a real katsu curry) was welcome with the lack of flavour in everything else but should not have been needed. Yet the strangest thing was not the huge helping of mixed fruit that came with the dish but the over abundence of mayo that had been squirted all over it!
Katsu curry and fruit I’ve had before but mayo on the fruit? Yuck!
My partner had a bibimbap which was served in a bulky wooden box which contained the stone bowl. Very odd… I understand the bowl is hot, it’s meant to be, but I’ve never had it served to me in a child safe wooden box before! My partner said it was very bulky and hard to eat from. The red sauce was not left at the table but put on by the waiter, which my partner did not like, he likes to be able to add as much as he likes as he eats. Also you were not given the option to mix your own bibimbap as in most places, which was also strange, the waiter just picked up the spoons and mixed away without asking.
My partner said the red sauce was tasteless and watery, a watered down version basically of what a good red sauce should be.
I’m unsure if they are afraid to use real Korean ingredients due to fear of English palletes not being used to it but still…. calling yourself a Korean place when you water everything down is a bit rubbish. I don’t think they have a good grasp on what Korean or Japanese food is, and this was outlined by their supposed ‘mandu dumplings’ nope, not mandu, those are quite clearly gyoza, or fried dumplings. Although mandu are a little similar to gyoza, they are not the same!
All in all very disappointing, had high hopes for the place but it didn’t live up to it. Would I eat here again? Most likely no, I wouldn’t unless I really fancied watered down food. Quite pricey for what it is too.
If you want good Japanese food, Samsi in Manchester is pretty good and for Korean Seoul Kimchi or Oriental Fire are really good choice. Oriental Fire also does nice tasting Japanese food too.

Got a take away bento box from here with chicken katsu curry…. at least I THINK that’s what it was supposed to be. The chicken was not breaded in panko breadcrumbs, while not everyone does katsu this way over here, it is traditional and should be done this way to make it katsu. Most places manage to do panko breadcrumbs thsi however was chinese breadcrumbs.
But my main complaint is with the supposed katsu curry sauce…. it was not in any form katsu curry sauce in fact it was an Indian curry sauce like a balti!!! Disgusting, I could not eat it at all and it ended up in the bin. The miso soup was flavoured badly and over powering, the salad wilted, the fruit salad a laughable bit of orange and melon. All in all a very bad experince, I would never go back as it seems they have no idea what Japanese food should taste like or how to prepare it properly. I can’t for the life of me understand why everone likes this place and can only assume it’s because they haven’t had much Japanese food.
If you want real Japanese tasting food I suggest Samsi in Manchester or even Wasabi in China Town is better than this!

(updated on 14-02-2012)
I’ve been coming to Smithills with my partner and family for many years and the food has always been good British food, large potions and great choice. The inside needs a little updating as it’s worn and drab but in a way blends in with it’s ye olde charm. The restaurant is spacious and comfortable and the waitresses are dressed as victorian style maids. The staff are mostly always friendly and helpful and as said before the menu choice is huge.
I can highly recommend the starter welsh rarebit and the mains of the fantastic cheese and onion pie, the steak with stilton and mushroom sauce, the ploughmans salad and the special menus that they run throughout the year. The desserts also offer a good choice although can sometimes be hit and miss but their nut sundae is wonderful and the cheesecake is also a safe choice.
But after a huge main you may be hard pushed to find room.
The menu itself often includes a selection of starters with any main from the menu main menu for just the main price and free ice cream and cheese and biscuits is also included although the free ice cream is not very good at all.
The only gripe I have is that they can sometimes be funny about you having a coffee at the table after your meal if it’s busy, they usher you into the waiting area and it’s a little annoying to not have your coffee at your table.
In summer, the grounds and woods around the old hall, just across from restaurant, make for a great and pretty way to walk off that big meal.
This is a place that I will eat at for many, many years to come.
KittyCatNat Update: Boy has this place gone downhill in the last month! It’s up for sale so the mangerment don’t really care anymore. Gone is the large menu, free cheese and fruit after your meal and now the quality of the food has slipped to almost uneatable. I loved this place, sad to see it reduced to such bad form. Oh well.

I bought a jumper from them 13 days ago to the day, when I tried it on it had a hole in one the of the sleeves. I could not get back to the Lowry any eariler than today and assumed that because the jumper still had all tags and the reciept there would be no problem. Boy was I wrong. 20 minutes of rude and aggressive behaviour from two staff members, in which they blatantly called me a liar, that I had damaged the goods myself and I would get no refund! The man started ranting that we were scaring the other customers away by saying they sold faulty goods! When all I’d said was the item I’d bought from them was damaged and I was within my rights to ask for a refund. I’ve been a customer here for over five years and normally the staff are on the rude side, but I never expected to be treated like a bit of dirt by them. After the man became overly aggressive and intimidating to my partner for no reason, we left, but I promised them I’d be contacting trading standards and reviewing them. I’m still in shock from the whole thing and they’ve lost my custom for good. From other reviews I’ve read on other sites this seems to be a trend for them, stay away and buy somewhere else.

Visited here with my partner… never again! It sounds fantastic on their website and I was expecting a lot, it didn’t even meet me half way.
The farmshop itself is small, but has some good items… the cafe is where my problem lies. Bad food, bad service and bad prices! We sat down and I ordered garlic mushrooms on toast while my partner got rarebit. When it came it was the most thinly sliced bread I have ever seen, the mushrooms were uncooked, the garlic butter not melted, the toast soggy from the vinegar dressing on the tiny side-salad. My partner’s meal, hardly any cheese, nothing special, tasted like plain old cheese on toast on very thin, soggy vinegar bread. We complained about the food politely saying why we were not happy to the waiter, he took our unfinished meals back into the kitchen and returned a few minutes later looking sheepish. Apprantly the chef had told him it was fine, nothing wrong with it. He asked us if we wanted our meals back to which we said no, we would not eat it, it tasted awful. The waiter gave us our bill and went off without a sorry or even a mention of a discount. We complained again at the till to which we got a ‘So sorry about that’ but again no attempt to resolve the problem, we hadn’t eaten half our meals but were still charged full price! We argued for a moment with the woman at the till, but with other customers waiting behind us and the woman showing no signs of wanting to help we had no choice but to back down. We paid and vowed to never return. Awful place, for £8.00 (rarebit) I’d expect good cooking, good quality and good customer service. This place is lacking in all three.
The one star is only because we bought a brownie from the farm shop before eating at the cafe and that actually tasted nice, so one star for that.
bashallbarn Sorry – we have served over 2,000 meals this month and this is our first complaint (1 too many). I am glad you liked the farm shop and the home made brownie – I am sorry you didn’t like anything else. We aren’t perfect and we do make mistakes I can’t comment on the food as I didn’t see it, if the service was as you describe it then it was crap and I am sorry about that and I have already raised it with the management team, this is not our usual standard!
We try VERY hard to satisfy all our customers I am just very glad this kind of thing doesn’t happen too often – and thank you for letting us know about it.
If you email me your address I will get a voucher sent to you to cover the cost of your meal.
