Chip Inn - Edinburgh
226 Oxgangs Road North, Edinburgh, Scotland EH13 9EB
30-11-2008
The Chip Inn at Colinton Mains/Oxgangs is regularly very busy and this tells it’s own story. They offer the usual Chip Shop fare, including lovely fresh fish that I see being delivered every morning as I leave for work, and their home-made steak pie which is delicious. They also have a pizza section where they’ll make the pizza to your chosen size and flavour/toppings, as well as kebabs and baked potatoes. They also have a selection of groceries such as tea, coffee, cat and dog food, milk, toilet roll etc - ideal if you’re just nipped out to the chip shop and realised that you desperately need something else! The staff here are incredibly friendly, very hard working, and they usually move that Saturday night queue pretty quickly. Very, very clean and tidy shop.
Robertsons 37 Bar - Edinburgh
37 Rose Street, Edinburgh, Scotland EH2 2NH

Robertson’s 37 Bar is a bit of an unusual pub, having retained a very old fashioned air, despite the fact that it’s on Rose Street, in the city centre surrounded by modern, up-and-coming bars. But I love this place for exactly that reason. It feels like it’s been untouched for 50 years, but doesn’t seem dirty or tired, it’s more cosy and welcoming to me. They have a good selection of beers available and it’s where the older generation still come to have a pint and gossip. They offer toasties, hot pies with beans and/or gravy if you’d like, and the food is available most of the day, although I’ve never been in after 5pm. There are a couple of really cosy little booths, and you will be able to sit and chat quietly in here, as there is no loud music to get in the way. The staff have been there forever, and some of them will perhaps come across as a little grumpy, or even bossy! But having been in here many times, I know that this isn’t the true attitude, and it’s just a result of running a pub damn well and coping with all that brings, they’re actually great and we often have a good laugh! A firm favourite for me - in fact, I think I’m overdue a visit!

What a fantastic meal! You absolutely have to make the effort to have a meal out here, at least once, I have seldom had a really good dinner that I’ve raved about quite so much. We went here for a work night out well in advance of xmas and it was brilliant! The food is unusual without being so far out there that you don’t know what you’re getting. And it was utterly delicious. A lot of the meals are made for sharing (ideal for a romantic dinner for two!) and the atmosphere was very relaxed and informal. The waiting staff were polite although could have done with being a little more friendly.

This is a great wee pub tucked away in a small village in the suburbs. Really friendly staff and locals who make you feel very welcome if you’re popping in for a few drinks. The huge bonus is the restaurant which is located at the back of the pub, including a conservatory-type area. The food is gorgeous, seriously delicious and I’ll guarantee that there will be something to suit everyone on the menu. They do the most scrumptious home-made steak pie and lovely pasta or fish dishes. If I had to complain, it would be that he portions are huge and I can’t finish all the food!! They are happy for kids to be in the restaurant section of the pub, although they don’t like under 15’s after a certain time of night, I think it’s about 8pm if my memory serves me correctly.

The food here is good, nothing particularly special but I’ve never had a bad meal here and I used to come regularly for work lunches with visiting reps. It’s a really small restaurant with a lot of tables crammed in, so you feel like you’re sitting with the next table - if you want a quiet table for two, you won’t get it here as you’ll be able to take part in everyone’s conversations! Very nice quick service is a big feature, especially if you’re popping in at lunchtime and have to get back to your desk/counter in an hour. The staff are all very friendly and helpful.
Wonderland - Edinburgh

This has been a real kids wonderland since I was really little and as an adult I still get joy out of it! If you’re looking for model kits, of every possible size and shape imaginable, then Wonderland is the place for you. They have small pocket money model kits, and huge serious kits worth hundreds of pounds, with every possible paint option and accessory you could imagine. There are so many toys in here I couldn’t begin to list them all, and while they are mostly geared up for boys, with the models, scalextric and remote control cars, they certainly used to also have the most fantastic dolls houses and furniture you have ever seen. Wonderland - truly every kids dream! Easily accessible by bus as there are loads that go right past the shop.
Murrayfield Stadium - Edinburgh

Murrayfield is an amazing place to be! I’ve been to a couple of Rugby matches here, and if filled to capacity it’ll take just under 70,000 supporters although that doesn’t happen as often as I’d like! The atmosphere, especially against England, is absolutely electric, and the sound of Flower of Scotland bouncing around the stadium is incredible, I know I‘m biased, but it really does raise hairs on the back of your neck! It also gives you some idea of how fantastic the sound is when it’s set up for concerts - I saw Celine Dion here some years ago, and it was utterly incredible. The facilities here are great and everything is well laid out and signposted. Murrayfield is easily accessible by bus and is only around 15 minutes from the city centre.

This is a firm favourite with me and the kids, and I’ve been going there regularly for the last 30 odd years, so at least twice a year, since I was just a youngster!
It’s absolutely free, I don’t know how they do it, and it’s somewhere you can always find something you didn’t see before. You can have a quick visit or spend literally hours wandering around and there is something for everyone. Natural history, with stuffed mammals, birds, fish, insects - an unbelievable butterfly collection - ancient Egyptian artifacts, technology and of course the new Scottish history museum which is an absolute must-see. Plenty of facilities, including a café which is usually very busy, and a marvellous gift shop, both of which can be expensive or reasonable depending on what you want.

This is the ideal place to go if you are on a budget but want to treat yourselves to a meal out. It’s not what I’d call gourmet eating, but they have an all-you-can-eat buffet for about £10 a head and I’ve never had a problem getting a table by just turning up and waiting a couple of minutes, although I dare say it depends whey you go. I think it’s really handy if you’re out and about in the city centre doing an afternoon’s shopping and you fancy stopping off for something to eat before heading home. Jimmy’s has really good food, at very reasonable even cheap prices. It’s a fun place to be, with a light and bubbly atmosphere.
Sir Walter Scott Monument - Edinburgh
Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh, Scotland EH2 2EJ

The Walter Scott Monument is a really stunning piece of architecture and the local council had made sure that it was refurbished recently, It took forever and didn’t look attractive with the scaffolding around it, but it’s that’s all finished and with the stonework cleaned and repointed it’s now back in full glory. It’s a beauty to look at and in fact you can go inside (for a fee) and climb the stairs to the top. I’ve never actually gone up myself, but I’m told that the staircase is very, very narrow and seemingly never-ending! If you’re claustrophobic, it’s definitely not for you, but if you want a fantastic view, get on up there!
