Waterstones Merry Hill - Brierley Hill

Unit 95-96, Brierley Hill, West Midlands DY5 1SJ

23-11-2008 (updated on 16-04-2009)

The Waterstones store at Merry Hill is a wonderful shop and they’ve clearly put a lot of work into it as it seems to have a lot of wood and has a very library feel particularly on the ground floor.

The people they have working there are clearly people knowledgeable in their area rather than the normal minimum wage college kids that normally fill these jobs.

As a result they are very helpful if your looking for something specific and need help whether your looking for books for education or merely general interest.

It’s very conveniently located within the merry Hill shopping complex and is never to crowded without ever being deserted either.

On the downside it isn’t the cheapest of places as being a dedicated book shop this is where they make there money unlike Smiths for example but you do get exactly what your after or sometimes even find something better.

Bargain Booze - Halesowen

79-80 Long Lane, Halesowen, West Midlands B62 9DJ

26-11-2008

Says it all in the title this place is cheap, sells in quantity and has a lot of teenagers outside it on weekend night time. They certainly have got cheap prices and the owner (or manager) seems to be a decent guy on the few occassions i’ve been there. Store is laid out fine.

Perhaps the area is not the best place to be on a friday or saturday evening.

Lloyds TSB Bank - Halesowen

83-85 High Street, Halesowen, West Midlands B63 3BQ

26-11-2008

This is a high quality branch of Lloyds TSB and the staff are polite and friendly without exception whenever i have been there. They also have a good location on Halesowen high street and being within a few hundred metres metres of car parking space and is also accesible by foot.

Queues are dealt with efficiently and there is rarely a serious wait. And it’s advantage over its rivals is that its air conditioning system performs well (unlike many of the other banks in Halesowen for some reason)

Primark Stores - Birmingham

18 New Street, Birmingham, West Midlands B2 4RQ

26-11-2008

I’m going to have to echo a couple of other reviewers in saying that although Primark can be fantastically cheap it’s quality certainly suffers and this store suffers more than most with there layout being frankly terrible as you can barely walk through some of it without having to step over piles of clothes for sale. The store just ahs the feeling of chaos and there really isn’t enough tills for the amount of customers and the queue can often be over 10 minutes (even longer around Christmas).

However it is a Primark and has many fantastic bargains if you can be bothered to put in the effort to find them.

Sainsburys - Oldbury

Freeth Street, Oldbury, West Midlands B69 3DB

26-11-2008

This used to be one of the massive savacentre stores that covered the country but has since been turned into a regular sainsburys albeit the biggest Sainsburys i’ve ever seen. It has along with all the normal food sections, a clothes and electrical sections that wouldn’t look out of place in a department store and in fact everything about this store has a feeling of 'wholesalers’ about it.

The staff are perfectly competent and the amount of checkouts mean you never wait to long even if they could do with staffing a few more of these checkouts now and then. There is plenty of parking apart from perhaps the peek of the christmas rush but even then you wouldn;t have to wait long.

Finally the store does feel a bit old now as although it has been revamped it still cant escape the fact that the building is old but everything about it is still in fine working order.

Saffron Restaurant - Oldbury

909 Wolverhampton Road, Oldbury, Rowley Regis, West Midlands B69 4RR

26-11-2008

This place serves simply divine food…now im not normally the type of person to use that word but its rightly used here. The food is fantastic and unlike normal curry houses which are great after a few pints and the hotter the better, this place concentrates heavily on the taste first and the quality of the food is out of this world.

Like the previous reviewer suggested it is worth booking especially on weekends and its definately classed as a 'smart’ restaurant. It does cost a fair bit more than a typical Indian restaurant but you can certainly taste where that money goes and I couldn’t recommend it high enough.

Chiquito Restaurant & Bar - Oldbury

Hagley Rd West, Oldbury, West Midlands B68 0LH

26-11-2008

I’ve only been to this place once but it was without question a fantastic meal, the service was great and the layout pf the whole place gave a very welcoming impression. This is a great place to go to relax and enjoy some top quality food.

It’s also right on the '9’ bus route in and out of Birmingham and this means its access is incredibly easy even without your own transport.

Tesco Stores - Halesowen

Coombs Road, Halesowen, West Midlands B62 8AA

26-11-2008

This is one of two tesco expresses in the area and is a virtual clone of the other as it has the normal layout, is constantly clean, well-lit, and doesn’t feel particularly cramped.

This does differ from the other in the area in that it does sturggle for car spaces having only about 10-12 spaces available and at peak times you quite often have to wait for others to pull out of spaces for you to go in. On the other hand people rarely spend mor ethan 2-3 minutes in this shop it seems and the turnaround is very quick.

There is always food on the shelves and staff who are all very friendly are constantly refilling them.

One other downside is that it is rather expensive probably because of its 'conveniance’ nature and it does generally seem to add 20% to the price of a regular tesco store.

Co-op - Halesowen

2 Manor Lane, Halesowen, West Midlands B62 8PY

26-11-2008

This store is open till late most nights and is often the place to go for the extra pint of milk of loaf of bread. Although not the cheapest it seems to always have a small amount of everything in stock and can be a lifesaver when everywhere else is closed.

Staffed by local friendly people this shop is in a great position to serve as a mid-week shop point for the local community even if it is too small to compete with the “weekly shop” giants of tesco and sainsburys in the area.

Stars News Shops - Halesowen

14-16 Manor Lane, Halesowen, West Midlands B62 8PY

26-11-2008

A local corner shop thats not on a corner…Stars is twinned with a post office and serves the community very well whether you need that morning paper or to post a parcel that’s to big for the letterbox.

This place always has friendly staff and is very competitive on price and is in a great place to capture a lot of local trade and perhaps some people who are driving into Birmingham.
