Für mich ist die Buchbox kein Ort zum Verweilen, was ich eigentlich bei Bücherläden wichtig finde. Es ist zu sehr bunt, klein und voll gestopft dafür. Dennoch schätze ich, dass der Laden Sonntags auf hat, und wir sind doch immer wieder dort und finden auch fast immer was schönes. Auch sind die Mitarbeiter nett und hilfsbereit. Also bin ich froh, dass der Laden da ist.

Wunderbar neue Bibliothek, die erst vor ein paar Jahre in diese ehemalige Plattenbau-Schule eingezogen ist. Durch eine gekonnte Renovierung wirkt die Bibliothek außen und innen modern, freundlich und ruhig - es lädt richtig zum Stöbern ein. Die Auswahl könnte noch wachsen - Platz dafür ist auch geplant - aber erst mal bin ich einfach gern dort.

War zweimal da. Beim ersten Besuch war das Essen super lecker (und als Kalifornierin hab ich sehr hohe Ansprüche, wenn mit 'SF style Burritos' geworben wird). Da wurde ich, glaube ich, vom Inhaber bedient. Gestern war eine Andere da, die sehr nett war und kompetent wirkte, aber das Essen war irgendwie nur solala. Ich plädiere auch dafür (siehe meinen direkten Vorredner) das die Inhaber wieder selber arbeiten oder die Angestellte besser ausbilden und motivieren. Wäre schade, nach so einem tollen Start nun mittelmäßig zu werden.

Interessant, das die neueste Reviews meist entweder 5 oder 1 Stern geben… Also wer nicht gerade einen schlechten Tag erwischt hat, fand’s ganz gut. Habe auch woanders gehört, das die Qualität dort schwankt, aber das es oft sehr gut sein kann. Ich jedenfalls war gestern zum sehr späten Abend zum ersten Mal dort und fand’s ganz gut. Der erste Eindruck war komisch – die Einrichtung ist merkwürdig verblasst und der Raum sehr hell und kühl beleuchtet, aber zum Midnight-Snack passte das irgendwie. Die große und authentische Auswahl von Dim Sum überzeugte und die Rettichküchlein und Reisklöße in Lotusblätter schmeckten auch (und da bin ich ziemlich anspruchsvoll, denn ich komme aus Kalifornien, wo man richtig toll Dim Sum essen kann ;). Hauptspeisen habe ich noch nicht probiert, aber erst mal 4 Sterne für die Häppchen. Ich melde mich dann wieder nach dem nächsten Besuch!

The staff here are absolute dolls; they couldn't be more friendly, interested and willing to help. I've been availing myself of their help since arriving in Berlin in 2006 and although I now shop at German bookstores too (and new, bigger English bookshops have opened), there is nowhere that I feel more comfortable asking for the staff's help and no staff that has been more helpful. Whether I'm buying or selling used books, placing special orders or looking for out-of-print editions, or figuring out which travel guide to get, they've been patient and professional. Add the books - a modest number but high turnover and wide variety (used, new, children's, adult, academic, popular...) and you've got the reason why this bookshop is, and will hopefully, be going strong!

War gestern Abend zum ersten Mal da und es wurde ein schöner Abend! Die Tageskarte ist umfangreich und abwechslungsreich, mit vielen schönen saisonalen Kreationen, im Moment mit Pfifferlingen und anderen Pilzen, Zucchini und Rucola und viel hausgemachte Pasta. Die Torteloni mit Steinpilzen und am Tisch frisch gehobeltem Trüffel war, wie mein Vorredner schon meinte, fantastisch. Die MitarbeiterInnen waren lustig und spürbar gut drauf. Von einfachen Pizzen bis hin zu anspruchsvollen Steaks gibt es sicherlich etwas für jeden Budget. Nur die Einrichtung ist nicht so sehr gemütlich. Sonst ein nettes Restaurant. Ich freue mich, bald wieder vorbeizuschauen.

When I first heard about this place, I was spending a year away from Berlin and was so excited to get back and try it. Then I read some of the more recent reviews on Qype and started feeling skeptical – so many people said the quality has gone down and the portion sizes too. I wasn’t really in any hurry to go over there. But I happened to be walking by tonight so I decided to give it a chance.

Well, I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. The tacos were really pretty decent! I really don’t see what all the griping is about, people. I’m not afraid to gripe about bad Mexican food myself (see huge debate I accidentally started on the Dolores page), but I would consider Maria Bonita a decent taco place even if it was in California and not Berlin, where the pickings are slim and the standards, until recently, have been low.

For €5.50 I had three tacos on cute little tortillas (very small, but tasted like homemade) with an VERY generous amount of freshly griddled, crispy, juicy chopped pork, with nice little bits of fat, piled on each one. After adding the chopped onions, pico de gallo, and lime provided, I could barely lift the tacos to eat them without filling tumbling out. I had to eat the excess filling with a fork. Two little enameled tin cups of green and red salsa were also provided – I stuck with the green and it was tomatillo-y and tasty. I regularly paid around $5 for the same thing from taco trucks Stateside, so I consider €5.50 a very fair price for a place that has indoor seating, however simple. As I said, I’m really not sure what all the complaining is about. I thought the food was quite good and a good value.

My only critical feedback is that the service was a bit scattered. I got the distinct feeling that the counter guy couldn’t actually speak German, but he wouldn’t come out and say this to anyone, which caused some amount of confusion (most taco fans can speak English, but we aren’t going to unless you ask us to!). Also my tacos were delivered without silverware (understandable, since you should really eat them with your hands) and without napkins (not so understandable, since you should really eat them with your hands).

Oh, and I would have loved some sliced radishes with my tacos! They are on sale for 11 cents at Edeka right now so I’m sure they could add this flourish without raising the prices ;)

But these are minor issues – the food was right, and that’s what counts. I’ll certainly be stopping by again.

UPDATE: on a second visit, the service has gone downhill. Schade!

Absolut nicht hip oder angesagt, obwohl in Friedrichshain, und das gefällt mir gut. Ich mag die bunt-locker gestaltete Terasse mit vielen Pflanzen und Büchern und die Atmosphäre drinnen, ein Bisschen Hippie und ein Bisschen Omas Wohnung. Habe bisher Bücher und Platten gekauft, eine Tagesmenü gegessen (Pastinakencremesuppe mit Sesamkrokant) und einige Rhabarbersaftschorlen getrunken und bin nur zufrieden.

Update: beim letzten Besuch war die Bedienung so unfreundlich das ich wieder weggegangen bin. Aber ich hoffe sehr, ich habe nur einen schlechten Tag erwischt.

War gestern zum Mittag seit eine ganze Weile wieder dort und fand die Atmosphäre, Bedienung, Auswahl, Preise und besonders die sehr hübsch angerichtete, extrem leckere Nudelsuppe schwer in Ordnung. Ich hab mich über das Essen sehr gefreut und gehe gerne bald wieder hin, um andere Speisen zu probieren.
