weston beach - Weston-super-Mare

On The Beach, Weston-super-Mare BS23 1AT

05-07-2010

Lots of sand. However, when the tide is out, it is impossible to even get near to the water. It is better named Weston Super Mud. When the tide is in, it is nice for children to paddle and build sandcastles.

Dixons - Swindon

18-19 Regent Street, Swindon SN1 1JQ

18-01-2009

What was Dixons in Regent Street, Swindon has now been rebranded as Currys. It is an electrical retailer.

It is a town centre branch and as such, they do not keep the huge range that you might find in an out of town superstore.

I went in there recently to buy a memory stick for the computer. The staff were busy with queues of customers, but they were helpful, showing me where the memory sticks were kept, because I could not see them on the shelf.

Being in the town centre, you will need to park in one of the many car parks around town and walk to get here, but it is only a few minutes walk from the nearest car park.

Blackbushe Sunday Market - Camberley

Blackbushe Airport Blackwater, Camberley, Surrey GU17 9LG

18-01-2009

I haven’t visited Blackbushe Market for over a year, but I love it and must think about going there again.

It is one of the biggest markets that I have ever been to. You need to arrive early on a Sunday morning and allow yourself a good few hours to wander around. You also need to remember where you have been, otherwise you could end up going to look at the same stalls all over again.

You will find everything there from clothes and shoes to fruit, veg, flowers, CDs, luggage.

The stuff is cheap, but obviously, some of it is cheap and tacky. There are toilets on site. There are also a few places where you can grab a bite to eat and drink, either doughnuts or burgers or a cup of tea or a coke.

Writing this has made me think I must go again soon.

One word of warning. Make sure you remember exactly where you parked your car.

Butlins - Minehead

Warren Road, Minehead, Somerset TA24 5SH

18-01-2009

You will either love Butlins or hate it. There does not seem to be any middle ground.

I am one of the ones that loves it. I think that it is a really good place to take children on holiday, because if the children are occupied, then you can have a more relaxing break and at Butlins, there is always something for children to do.

The swimming pool is fabulous, with big slides etc.

The funfair rides are good and all included in the price of your holiday.

The evening entertainment is good, with shows put on by Redcoats or visiting guests.

The accommodation is basic, but you don’t really go there to spend a lot of time in your chalet.

If you are self catering, I would suggest doing your shopping in one of the big supermarkets on the outskirts of Minehead, not on the campsite.

If you want to go outside of the camp, the beach is nearby, but not really a brilliant beach. The town of Minehead is about a mile or so away. It is only a small town centre. There are steam trains that you can go on a trip on.

Butlins - Bognor Regis

Upper Bognor Road, Bognor Regis, West Sussex PO21 1JJ

If you want to leave the campsite itself, there is a beach just outside, but it is pebbly, not sandy, or the town centre of Bognor Regis is only 15 minutes walk away.

Pontin's - Rye

Camber Sands Holiday Centre, Rye, East Sussex TN31 7RL

18-01-2009

We went here for a short break last year. The chalet that we stayed in was basic, but adequate for our needs. The only problem with our accommodation was that the tin opener broke, but that was replaced as soon as we reported it.

The swimming pool was nice and fun for the children. The entertainment was really good. I would say that it is an ideal place to go if you have children, because if the children are entertained, then you can enjoy your break too.

There is plenty to do in the day time, such as crazy golf or hiring a tricycle for about 3 people to ride. If you venture outside the campsite, the beach at Camber sands is really nice.

Chessington World of Adventure - London

Chessington Park Chessington, London KT9 2NE

18-01-2009

There can’t be many people who have not heard of Chessington World of Adventure. It is a big theme park with lots of rides and also a small zoo.

Some of the bigger rides like the vampire roller coaster have long queues, so in peak season, you could find yourself spending more time queueing than actually going on the rides. If you plan your time carefully, you can go on rides without such long queues during the middle of the day and go on the rides that tend to have bigger queues either when the park first opens or in the last half hour before it closes, when there tend to be less people around.

It is an ideal place to go for a day out with children. If you are intending to go, my advice would be to have a look around on the internet before you go, as you are quite likely to be able to find a voucher for kids go free or buy one get one free.

Gap Outlet - Swindon

58-60 Great Western Designer Outlet Village, Kemble Drive, Swindon SN2 2DZ

18-01-2009

This Gap store is in the Great Western Designer Outlet village in Swindon.

The Designer Outlet Village is all shops of well known designer names selling of clearance stock at reduced prices. Gap is just one of the many stores.

The outlet village is open seven days a week and tends to get very busy on Saturdays and Sundays, but during the week, it is quiet and it is open to 8pm, so you could go there after work. It is a really pleasant clean and tidy place to shop.

The Gap Outlet is in a corner and is quite a big shop. They often have really cheap T-shirts and things, but whether they have what you really need at the time you go there is doubtful. I find the sizes on Gap clothes confusing. If you go to Gap on a busy day, you might find you have to queue for ages behind people with armfuls of stuff.

Pets At Home - Swindon

ST. Margarets Retail Park, Oxford Road, Swindon SN3 4ES

18-01-2009

Pets at Home is in the St Margarets retail park near Hobbycraft, on the opposite side of the dual carriageway to Sainsburys. There is plenty of free car parking spaces outside.

It is a really big shop, with all sorts of different dog food, cat food and stuff like sawdust for smaller animals. They have some animals there that they sell, and if you have children, you will probably find that they like looking round at the guinea pigs or the fish.

The staff there are pleasant and helpful enough, but possibly not quite so knowledgeable as staff in smaller pet shops. The prices are alright, but not especially cheap.

The Toby Cavery - Swindon

North Swindon District Centre, Thamesdown Drive, Swindon SN25 4XY

18-01-2009

The Toby Carvery is in North Swindon, within easy walking distance of Asda Walmart.

They do really good value carvery meals. You go up to the counter and choose your meat. Either you can go for just one meat, say beef, or you can try a little bit of different things, say beef, turkey and gammon. The chef will carve the meat off the joint and put it on your plate and then you help yourself to the choice of vegetables. You can have as much as you want. You can even go back for more vegetables if you want (but not more meat). They do childrens portions too.

It is a good atmosphere. There is a garden outside if you go there in the summer and want to sit in the fresh air to enjoy a drink.

It can get very busy, especially on a Sunday.
