Happy Moose Drinker's Qype profile

Albion Inn - Chester

Park Street, Chester, Cheshire CH1 1RN

22-05-2013

A proper wonderful pub, the internal walls of which are decorated with many war related items of interest (the street leads to where the drill hall/recruitment centre was in the First World War).

Robinsons Dizzy Blonde was a really nice beer and they kindly let me order some haggis to go with it, shortly after the official kitchen closure.

There is a naughty pub cat who doesn't take kindly to being shut out of the pub area when food is being served. He/She managed to sneak in but didn't ask me for any haggis.

They like to preserve the traditional pub atmosphere that they enjoy and to this end have quite a few rules!

Kings Arms - Bodmin

Bridges, Bodmin, Cornwall PL30 5EF

21-05-2013

Charming place. A friendly locals kind of place. There is an extra warmth to these kind of places that cannot be measured using mercury.

The beer was good, choosing from Proper Job, Dartmoor, Tribute + HSD.

The Bountiful Cow - Holborn

51 Eagle Street, Holborn, London WC1R 4AP

20-05-2013

This pub has quite a nice atmosphere for a more modern pub. Shame that they had a few taps but all with the same beer on them. Could do a lot worse than Adnams Southwold mind! Good beer, well served.

They are big on their steaks. It is a gastropub for sure.

Unusual toilet porn.

York Tap - York

Railway station, York, North Yorkshire YO41 1

17-05-2013

Excellent station pub but the service was very very slow. And that was before midday! I hope they have more staff on later! Seriously attractive pub though, particularly by railway pubs standards. Still worth the wait even if they haven't sorted out their staffing!

I was comfortable enough in those surroundings to enjoy a couple of beers. Black Jack (4pc) from the Short Slack Brewery and Lotus IPA (5.6pc in the ruddy morning!).

New Zealand Arms - Derby

2 Langley Street, Derby, Derbyshire DE22 3GL

16-05-2013

Another Dancing Duck brewery pub, but a modern one this time. They offered a wider beer (and cider) selection but I preferred the look and feel of their other pub! Still a nice place though.

A random voice called out to me in toilet. Some poor guy was caught with his pants around his ankles. I went to the bar to report the need for TP. The laughing came when the poor guy returned to his drink!

Black Horse Inn - Hertford

29-31 West Street, Hertford, Hertfordshire SG13 8EZ

15-05-2013

Really a rather nice pub. Here, even more than in a lot of other pubs, it was such a shame to have unavoidable tv screens. They suck all the charm out of such a venue. How is the proper fire supposed to compete?

Had some Black Stallion in the Black Horse, from a choice of 6 beers. It was certainly a quality beer.

York Brewery - York

10 Stonegate, York, North Yorkshire YO1 8AS

14-05-2013

Relaxed on the members only rule and they even offer a CAMRA reduction. The shop is at the back of the venue. There is an unusual but appealing look to the place.

Three Kings is a decent Christmas beer!

The Prince - Brixton

469 Brixton Road, Brixton, London SW9 8HH

14-05-2013

This brightly lit venue is not my ideal place for a drink but it was rather nice with a good beer, Roasted Nuts by Rebellion

Used to be a much darker (lighting wise) venue called Prince of Wales.

Rowditch Inn - Derby

246 Uttoxeter New Road, Derby, Derbyshire DE22 3LL

13-05-2013

Just three stars is probably a little harsh but I was a wee bit disappointed given the great expectations I'd been given for this nice spit n sawdust venue.

The bar is obviously doing very well for itself, it was packed on a night when other pubs nearby were not very busy. Fighting my way to the bar to only find a couple of beers, 1 very common, was a let down given what I'd heard. The beer I went for, Arty Farty was alright.

The throwback of a bartender did have what I believe are commonly referred to these days as 'mad skillz' when it came to the topping up of patrons pints!

Eliot Arms - St. Germans

Fore Street, St Germans, Saltash, Cornwall PL12 5NR

10-05-2013

The dogs in St Germain clearly have something against me as they barked me a most hostile welcome chorus that I could hear most of the way to the local pub.

Thankfully the pub was much more welcoming and I stayed to enjoy a good beef curry, washed down with the always delicious Proper Job. It is a bit foody in places, but is otherwise a lovely place.

The dogs let me leave without comment.
